Re: i5-8265U

I think I made a mistake: what I meant is that BIOS does not show up in EZ mode. Like this:

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/X ... X509_A.pdf (see page 63 and further).

Instead th BIOS is in plain text mode, like in your screen pics above.

Re: i5-8265U

Not sure, but maybe GPT forces EFI booting regardless of the BIOS setting. Do you mean you can't enter the BIOS settings specifically in EFI mode? Yes. I can enter BIOS only in legacy mode. Which is weird because System Information says BIOS mode is UEFI. Sounds like an annoying anti-feature (?) th...

Re: i5-8265U

One more thing: while tinkering around with the Asus Vivobook, I noticed that I can enter the BIOS only in legacy mode, but the "System Information" says the BIOS mode is UEFI and there is an EFI partition on my drive (which is GPT, btw). Any idea why I can't enter the UEFI mode?

Re: i5-8265U

I have not really used cpu benchmark tools until now, do you have any recommendation?

And speaking of, what is your opinion on the reliability of cpubenchmark.net? Do you think it gives a good pictures of cpu performances or it is rubbish?

i5-8265U

Hi, I have a question. How good is an i5-8265U relative to an i5-2500 and i7-4720HQ (these were the CPUs for my older desktop and gaming laptop which I replaced 2-3 years ago). A member of my family recently replaced his laptop and gave me his older model, an Asus Vivobook with i5-8265U. I was wonde...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

There are simpler alternatives, like: https://openhardwaremonitor.org https://github.com/LibreHardwareMonitor/LibreHardwareMonitor/releases But HWiNFO should show it somewhere in the Sensor Status window, under the motherboard heading: https://listoffreeware.com/wp-content/uploads/hwinfo_fan_speed_...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

For speed reporting? HWiNFO is a good all-around hardware info tool: https://www.hwinfo.com But doesn't sound likely to be the cause. HWinfo does not seem to provide info about fan speed (albeit does a very good job providing info about the other components). Could you suggest any other alternative?

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

I missed the message about the result changing with external cooling. Still, odd. I'd think up and down should behave similarly. Also, even with Ookla's inefficient speedtest code, getting bogged down on a rather modern i5-8265U is a bit surprising. Plus, you said it's the same on the other, more e...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

For speed reporting? HWiNFO is a good all-around hardware info tool: https://www.hwinfo.com But doesn't sound likely to be the cause. Actually, I would disagree. If a cooler does not work properly, the pc will reduce the performance of the cpu to prevent it from getting fried. And a speed test will...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

I don't think a LAN test is necessary, though. I checked the CPU usage as you suggested and it gets close to 50%. It seems that the laptop (probably the cpu) gets throttled due to overheating. I placed it on a cooling pad and the speeds improved to 650-800 Mbps download and to 900 Mbps for upload. A...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

I don't think the CPU is the problem, though speedtest.net isn't the most efficient. Try also: https://openspeedtest.com https://fast.com https://librespeed.org Does the very same adapter, on the same internet connection, 5 minutes later, work faster on another computer? Also try testing in the LAN...

Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

Hi, I have a small issue which is puzzling me: I have an older laptop (Asus A509FA with i5-8265U, 8 GB DDR4 2400 and 500 GB SSD, and integrated graphics) which has no ethernet port and I tested it with an USB ethernet adapter to see how it works (I am on a 1 Gbps network). I used for the test two US...

Re: Laptop suddenly freezes

I think I might have some suspicions about what could cause this: I suddenly recalled that, when I originally installed my OS, the driver for wireless did not install automatically through the Windows Update, but I had to search it on the web and download it manually. It might be that it was a fault...

Re: Laptop suddenly freezes

I'd let it sit a for a while to see if it resolves itself after a minute or 5. It does not. Is the computer fully stuck, or only no response to user input? I believe it is no response to user input. Does it happen both when connected and disconnected from power? The laptop is always connected to po...

Laptop suddenly freezes

Hi, I have an issue I hope I could receive some help with. I have a laptop Asus ROG with 5800H, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and RTX 3060 which is experiencing occasional Windows freezes (both mouse and keyboard become unresponsive and the laptop has to be shut down from the power button). The frequency for ...

What causes dead pixels? Could it be user's fault? Help needed

Hi, need some help with an issue. A months ago, one of my laptops, an Asus ROG (which is roughly 8 months old), developed a dead pixel and a stuck one. I was irritated in principle, but it was not such a big deal and I paid it no mind, attributing it to bad luck. But today an older laptop I have, a ...

So I have 2 questions if you could help me, guys: 1. What components/hardware do come w...

Re: Windows 10 ocassionally freezes in youtube

It does not seem to occur in Firefox... With HW acceleration? Now, that's odd. Freezing Windows is rare. Maybe a combination of a driver bug + Chrome doing something strange? But with such a common software-hardware combination you'd expect other people have encountered and reported it. A few more ...

I disabled hardware acceleration in Edge and it seems the freezes no longer occur. What does that mean? Could it be a driver issue with those particular clips? To the extent that was feasible, yes. To be more specific: I have this laptop for 2 months. Hello, I have a bit of an issue with my desktop: I was away from the desktop for more than an hour and I left it running; when I returned, I found it in a semi-shut down state: the desktop was still on, the blue light (power) was on, but there was no signal to the monitor and the red light (for the ...

Re: Laptop Ram Upgrade HP 430 G3

You need the same type and speed of memory for it to work. Does not have to be from the same manufacturer. Actually you don't need the same speed of memory either it will run at whatever is slowest in the machine. So if the speed is 2133mhz for what is already installed then 2400mhz will be compati...

Laptop Ram Upgrade HP 430 G3

Hi, I want to upgrade the RAM in my laptop HP 430 G3 from 4 GB to 8 GB. Since the original module is a rather obscure brand (Hynix DDR-2133, CL15, 1.2 V), I thought about replacing it altogether to avoid any compatibility issue, since 8 GB module are cheap enough. Question: could there be a problem ...
