Re: Something's different...

I kept my optimism thanks to drfish's posts here mainly due to his enthusiasm and glass half full attitude in spite of the red flags in the things he wrote. That optimism evaporated after I've googled the new owners and read the post/article about the site redesign by Renee. I'm sorry to say this, b...

Re: Peter Bright of Ars Technica charged by FBI

Jeezus, that's nuts. I was wondering yesterday about all those moderated down comments under various articles then clicked on one of them. Yikes! It's also mildly shocking how you don't put some of the tweets/comments that were out there in the open in context because you just don't go there in your...

Re: Slow NVME SSD write speeds on Aero 15x

It's some silly Windows settings reset/change issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/gigabyte/comments/9of8wp/aero_15x_transcend_nvme_drive_write_speeds/ The laptop is great, but the software support is abysmal. My one is an early unit with all the parts as in the review units (LG display, Toshiba SSD, Rip...

Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

You'll be fine with the GT1030 if you really don't want to spend money. I'd go for a non-Ti simple 1050 at least, but a $70 or so passive GT1030 is hard to fault. Seems like you'll be at the same level or faster in almost every game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLAs8S7x6PY

Re: Safely hosting web services from home

Don't, it's not worth it for a website or API (not sure what that "something" is so I'll leave it). That "expensive cloud server" is in fact a $5-$10 per month VPS with someone like Linode or Digital Ocean for a website or an API.

I won't repeat the ones that were mentioned already unless you are into a bit of "most recommended" then I can revisit, so here are some other ones: iZombie - if you enjoyed the style of Veronica Mars, but now with grown up people Brooklyn 99 - it's just great, like a Parks and Rec mixed w...

Re: Free file hosts with decent storage capacity?

I don't think you will be able to avoid some self hosting or some form of payment with the requirements you have. A Nextcloud install on the cheapest $5 per month Digital Ocean or a Linode instance will do the trick for example.

Realistically only two come into question - the two you asked about - VMware and Hyper-V. You can pretty much forget about the rest if you want to have a relatively uncomplicated life as an admin. I know Hyper-V developed nicely in the last couple of years, but the issues you've had with it are seem...

Re: What to do with old PC?

Too power hungry for anything you could use it at home as a server. To be fair it is still a decent low-end PC for someone who does not have any and seeing that you would not get much for it in parts or put together I would suggest to donate it to someone who would appreciate to have a PC. They can ...

Leave it be and upgrade when you encounter the first game or program that does not give you satisfactory results and you know from benchmarks and tests on the interwebs that a CPU upgrade will improve the situation.

Re: AMD X390/X399 HEDT Platform

I'm not confusing anything. Of course you are. You keep comparing Ryzen against Kaby Lake. You see Intel has two lineups of high-end CPUs, one 'consumer' line-up that tops out at 4 core Kaby Lake with stunningly high clocks, and another HEDT lineup that is one μArch generation behind, with Broadwel...

So? The statement was that AMD has the IPC advantage. They don't. Even if I read into it what you are reading into it apparently - that the poster meant Broadwell - they don't.

I'm not confusing anything. The IPC is at best at Broadwell levels as per AMD themselves. They are 6-8% behind Kaby Lake.

Re: Current state for a home Web server

As it has been said already, don't run it from home. It makes no sense. Both Rackspace and Amazon are pretty expensive for this, much better options are the VPS providers, from my point of view the top choice there being Linode as well. The $10 instance should be enough for your needs, I would not g...

Re: games with 16gb system requirements...fact? or fiction?

RAM is cheap. I got 32 GB so I don't have to worry about stuff like this until it's time to upgrade again. And I use Chrome. Small correction - RAM *was* cheap, up until last spring or early summer. Prices started to go up after that and now everything is at least double what it was. I also got a 3...

Re: New Router Needed (bought - back to drawing board)

Why not just try powerline stuff? It's typically fast enough and very stable. At $200+ you can get quite a few powerline adapters, including ones that could act as a WiFi bridge. Powerline is good when it's working. We've had it in our old place and was working OK in 2 out of 3 sockets (1+2 room sp...

But for the H110 and B150 chipsets, I'm sure the G4620 will be fine. Did you guys agree?  True, except if you go ...

Re: Pentium G4620 vs i3-7300

For a cheap gaming machine both VT-d and AVX 2.0 make no difference. The more cache might down the line, but I find the $50 difference too much in this category. Saying that, the G4620 is not the one to look at here, the G4560 for $64 would be a better choice. That's half price of the i3-7300 and th...

Re: SSD prices and Competition.

Prices on SSD-s are already going up. The reason for now is plausible to be shortage, but realistically it does not help that there is only a handful of NAND manufacturers left. As JAE pointed out, it's not a monopoly, but an oligopoly and that is the same bad, just with a bit more effort regarding ...
