Re: Radeon VII or wait for Navi?

I use an eGPU enclosure, and I'm limited to use AMD if I want to use both macOS and Windows and I'm rocking an RX580 at the moment, and I wonder if I should go out of my way and get a Radeon VII (which runs SUPER HOT, I know) or, should I wait for the Navi release... if it ever comes out :( What eG...

Re: No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

I think techreport would be a really good merge for wirecutter/sweethome. The thoroughness of each blends well, and the editorial style is simple and great. The monetization is also key, as wirecutter/sweethome is funded from sales ads. Slight correction - the Wirecutter doesn’t run ads, they funde...

Re: Handbrake: expensive old CPU versus new budget CPU

What I've read is NVEC on the newest GPU's is a far cry better than the old ones. Perhaps a good candidate for TechReport to do an article on? I've done a few handbrake bluray transcodes with CPU vs NVENC on my geforce 1080, and unless it's changed significantly for RTX the file sizes for NVENC h.2...

Re: Nvidia GT520. Worth upgrading?

If you're thinking about getting a video card just for support/video decoding, I wonder if intel comes back into the equation with integrated video. I'm running an i5 coffee lake CPU (2018 Mac mini) and it handles all sorts of desktop/webGL/video playback without any problems at 4k. I took a quick l...

Re: Frametime 8gb vs 16gb ram benchmarks?

To the OP: for purely gaming, 8gb is sufficient at the moment and if the choice boiled down to RX570+16gb vs RX580+8gb I would take the RX580. However, if you're in an area where a lot of people resell their computer stuff (e.g. on craigslist or the equivalent), consider that you could sell the RX57...

Re: New (for me) Apple iMac

The $60 enclosure does look really nice, though. I take it the enclosure has to be Mac compatible? There's no specific requirement - FW800 works the same across any computer that supports it - but OWC products tend to be pretty good because they have a Mac-focused lineup. Getting one second-hand of...

If you really want to give Mac OSX a try, here's some resources! First, full tech specs for your machine: https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=a1224 .It looks like you'll want 667 MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 200-pin SODIMMs. Stick with whatever's cheapest on ebay/amazon. Re: Suggest Games with 4K graphics

May be a bit unusual, but Battletech and XCOM2 look really good in 4k. XCOM2, in particular, looks really impressive once you load the map packs and custom soldier skins from the Steam Workshop. I average 60+ FPS in battletech with my geforce 1080, but XCOM2 can be anywhere from 20-60fps - it seems ...

I'm using the 6-core 2018 Mac Mini (Core i5-8500B) and compared to my old Mac Pro (3.4ghz 6-core westmere) everything is faster (handbrake transcoding, iPhoto, iMovie, even non-GPU limited gaming). I have a roughly similar system to yours (Mac Pro - westmere xeon 3.4 ghz, 16gb RAM), so I can tell you that the Geforce 1060 6gb will run pretty much any game at 60fps (no antialiasing) unless you're loading up on tons of graphics mods. The RX580 8gb is basically its equal in performance, but it ru...

Time Machine works okay, especially since it's built-in - it has the bonus of keeping local snapshots if your sister's bad about remembering to hook up the external drive. To me, doing two windows side by side (edge-snap windows to half screen width typically) is much easier than arranging 4 equal size windows on a monitor. This isn't quite the same as 4 equal-width windows, but if you're using Windows 10 you can snap a window to a corner and it'll automatically resi...

Re: I'm thinking about upgrading my iPad 3 (2011) to an iPad Pro

Definitely wait for the upgrades, and buy whichever fits your budget when they are released. The iPad Pro 12" has a worse camera and older-spec screen because the 9.7" was released ~1/2 a year later with 6S-era chips - that's why you can have stuff like always-on "Hey Siri" with ...

Microsoft restricted what drives you can use in the *internal* drive bay. I had to flash my WD black 160gb drive with a 120gb firmware to be able to use it internally. Like JohnC said, the Play/Pause button is one of the more consistent ways to make the bars go away. I usually have to actually hit the button, then make sure my cursor is hovering within the video window (i.e. the cursor is not ON the status bar, or offscreen). This is on OSX, at any rate.

I'd be leery of overclocking anything I'm using for work, but the most interesting thing I've heard about AIO coolers is that kits built from a single metal (i.e. copper block+copper radiator or aluminum block+aluminum radiator) last longer due to less corrosion over time.
