Great info, thanks. This will be the first time swapping out a CPU. Hopefully I won't screw anything up. A quick question, after googling around I found that the bios seems to be ready for an X2 and device mgr says ACPI Multi PC already. So skipping the first few steps in the guide, you say to d/l t...

Support for X2, yay. I guess I can give it a whirl.

Something like encoding video or mixing down two dozen 24/96 wav files (and corresponding effects plug-ins) at the same time as watching a dvd and surfing around. It's impossible to do both at the same time. I should probably just go to the living room while I wait, but I'm lazy and demand convergen...

Upgrading prebuilt Compaq

This is lame, I know, but bear with me: The Compaq tower I use is an old Athlon 64 3500+ socket 939/DDR400 machine, WinXP. I don't really tax it even with audio recording/editing/plug-in software. However I would like it to be more adept with multitasking. Because it works fine 99% of the time I'd r...

The term "You get what you pay for" applies big time in the projection world. The current champ in the "affordable" category is the Panasonic AX200U. This model is touted for it's great performance with video games. It seems particularly suited for your needs. It costs about $130...

Since you have many spiders that size in your place, there are two assumptions: 1) You don't dust/vacuum often enough in the corners of your house. 2) There are many bugs that are to be consumed by these spiders that do not have a natural predator anymore. :o or I could have just posted four words: ...

The only thing I would convince you on doing is getting a discount by getting a student to buy it for an extra $100 or more off as an educational purchase. I was so sick and tired of keeping my gf's PC clean and updated. Finally got her a MBPro and haven't had to deal with any viruses and garbage. I...

Great great movie, I laughed my ass off...11:59PM on Thursday night! As a long time fan I wish there were more "in" jokes that referenced obscure trivia from seasons long ago.

Surprised by the lack of guest stars. There were a few, but not nearly as many as I thought it would have.

Did you just answer your own question? HD media is going to be it. The studios probably don't want to do it since disc media probably makes them more money, but internet distribution for content will probably be the norm for it.

I for one, am sick to death of compressed, lossy formats.

You guys are right of course. I spent 5 years with an old PIII machine running Win98SE (and later Ubuntu) before getting this old horse. It would be more cost effective with newer gear, but I just need to "fill in the gap" for now. Funny thing, I got my gf a mb pro recently for her bday (d...

Memory it is, thanks guys. Not worried about voiding the warranty. I keep my processes running nice and lean, nothing funky going on. The instances I find choppy playback, etc. is when I have several projects going on at once and browsing youtube or watching videos during mixdowns and rendering. I f...

More Memory or New Graphics?

I have an older system, off the shelf Compaq with some humble components. Looking to upgrade it a bit for better performance with multitracking software, a bit of photo editing, and general use (video gets a bit choppy with several processes going on). Would adding additional memory help smooth thin...

Loaded it up on an ancient PIII-500, 256 machine (eMonster "best gaming machine on the planet", ha!!!). Took several tries to get the disc to load up correctly. Using FF and IM uses up 25-35% of system resources. Fun to play with, but definitely not my main system. Win98SE on it before was...

With all that said, because of the ubiquitous nature of prosumer DSLRs, there are more uninspired photos floating around out there (mine included). Just makes it easier to tell the difference between talent and hacks, really. :D What, you mean buying the bestest, most expensive, megaist gear doesn'...

It all depends on what you shoot, of course. If your favored emulsions were among the discontinued ones you'd probably be feeling more of a bite. I'm pretty sure it's gotten more difficult to get MF film processed around here too. Obviously not a huge deal if you process your own, but a lot of peop...

Keep buying up that digital gear. Makes film gear cheaper and cheaper. :P and film and processing scarcer and scarcer and pricier and pricier... That cuts both ways. For now film and developing costs (I do my own) haven't gone up in any noticeable way. Lucky me, I'm in nyc where material is plentif...

Keep buying up that digital gear. Makes film gear cheaper and cheaper. :P FWIW, I use both MF and digital rigs when out doing the photog thing. For everyday fun, a compact digicam is plenty adequate. It's all about what works best for the job. Studio work and fine art merits at least MF (if not LF) ...

FF = customization heaven. Even for computer illiterate folk, once I set it up on their machines, they're so impressed, they eventually ditch IE.

The problem lies with convincing them to d/l it in the first place.
