Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

The problem with fuel cell tech is that it just sucks and compared to batteries it's incredibly inefficient. I'd also like to see some super capacitor instant charging but it's not there yet. By the time capacitors have energy density comparable to that of current batteries (if they ever get there)...

For that 52nd week, that week when that same vehicle is driving the family to $DIFFERENT STATE for $HOLIDAY/VACATION, what do you do? (As I also said, those rest stops are going to need 100% [and probably 200% or more for that pesky last week in November]). This one's easy: For that 1 week, you ren...

And after all that, I'd still prefer better public transit options to skip the daily vehicle entirely. Getting cars entirely off the roads is better from an emissions standpoint, and it would likely improve conditions for people who HAVE to use vehicles. I commute on public transit these days. I do...

Once these get charging stations, it would be quite easy for an extended range EV to get from end of the province to the other. I'm waiting for the ubiquity of 400 miles range in 10 minutes or less. If you want to break the hold hydrocarbons have on transportation, you have to meet/exceed hydrocarb...

Drives which are in active use heat up, which raises the dewpoint, which should help drive off any moisture. I have no idea if this is a real factor in drive longevity or not, but it seems plausible for humid environments.

Cellphones didn't have common chargers until laws started mandating that. Yeah, but there was less at stake there. And either there's a loophole which allows manufacturers to bypass the requirement, or manufacturers with enough clout can get the standard redefined to include their preferred chargin...

Re: My 30 y/o fridge is clicking

I know that's the common wisdom, but I do wonder. There's nothing inherently breakage-prone in simple heavy-duty electronics. And the exuberant prices for replacement parts have no real reason, since it's mostly simple boards with simple MCUs. It is clearly a case of "because they can". M...

Find your local homebrew shop, and get yourself a jar of this stuff . Follow the package directions for cleaning beer fermenters. If there's still residue after that, hit it with a dilute bleach solution, let it soak overnight, rinse and air dry until the bleach odor is gone. Replace all of the filt...

I wouldn't expect NOS that's been stored properly to act different than a brand new drive. I still have systems at work getting NOS replacements of drives that were last made almost 8 years ago (yes, very old systems). Emphasis on "stored properly", and IMO the jury is still out on helium...

I think you missed his point. Yes the net density by province is lower, but most of the population they do have is concentrated in a strip fairly close to the southern border. You can serve a pretty large percentage of the population by putting a charging network there.

I wouldn't give up on finding a repair person (or parts if you want to try DIY). New appliances these days are effectively just another piece of consumer electronics (i.e. treated as disposable), and there's no way you'll get anything close to another 30 years out of a new one. We managed to find a ...

Well, there you have it. So the warranty is effectively "5 years or until MD Tech disappears, whichever comes first."

Up to you to decide whether the cost savings is worth taking that risk.

I don't think you can assume that the drive still meets factory error rate specs 5 years on. I'd assume it's the spec during at least the drive's normal lifespan. "Normal lifespan" for HDDs is typically assumed to be ~5 years, so you're potentially already at the edge of that, if not past...

Any hard data on lifespan of NOS drives? Not that I'm aware of. Where do you have electrolytic caps in them? Potentially in the same kinds of areas where motherboards would have them, i.e. for power smoothing. There's a good chance they switched to all solid electrolyte before then, but I am not ce...

Re: HDDs from MD Tech and DBSKY on Amazon?

If I look up the listing for HUS724040ALA640 on Newegg, the oldest review is from 2013. So assuming they aren't refurbs, they are almost certainly "new old stock" of a 5+ year old drive. They will likely be slower, more power-hungry, and noisier than modern equivalents, and you may have di...

Laphroaig Select. Not real sure about this one. It's... attenuated? Definitely less intense than the 10, far less iodine and peat. It's not terrible, but I don't think it's Laphroaig. Sounds like they're trying to appeal to a broader audience. Which seems like it kinda runs counter to their ethos. ...

I'd say it is fairly important. You *really* don't want nasty plasticizers or heavy metals leaching into your drinking water. If you're dealing with hot water distribution you need to look at permissible temperature ranges as well, since some "food grade" plastics are only good up to a cer...

FWIW, it *is* possible to remove the surface lead from brass fittings by "pickling" the brass in a solution of acetic acid and peroxide. This reduces the amount of lead that can dissolve into whatever is flowing through the fittings to negligible levels. This is likely the "high-tech ...
