Re: FreeNAS I̶n̶t̶e̶l̶ ̶8̶0̶8̶6̶k̶ AMD Threadripper upgrade!

I thought it was not uncommon for desktop boards to refuse to boot without a GPU? I know it doesn't help you in this case, but for older motherboards (with a legacy PCI slot) these are a reasonable solution. I have one of them in my current home server. Doesn't add much in terms of power consumption...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

For even more fun, try getting Acrobat Reader working on Linux. None of the native Linux PDF tools handle PDF forms decently, so there's actually a use case for it; unfortunately, the last version for Linux was Acrobat Reader 9. You can make it work, but installation on a modern distro is a PITA.

Firm stance of "only count city proper" for population quotes over here (unless explicitly stated otherwise of course). Also, NYC doesn't count. It's...weird. Most cities are within a county or are their own entity separate from any county. NYC is the only one* where this is backwards as ...

Re: Problem With Keyboard

Since you don't have another system to test the keyboard on, you will either need to borrow another keyboard to try, or connect it to someone else's computer. That way you can narrow it down to the keyboard or a software issue with the computer. When you did the reinstall did you do a full wipe or i...

Does the keyboard do the same thing when connected to another computer? If so, then the keyboard has gone bad.

When you try to use the left-shift and W, what happens? Do you get a lowercase W, or do you get nothing?

So this only applies if you've entered payment info on their site recently?

They used to be my "go to" site for computer parts, but I don't think I've bought anything there in the past couple of years, for reasons others have already outlined.

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

BTW Indy is a lot bigger than I thought. 2010 census data says close to 2 million people in the city and pushing 2.5 million in the metro area. I figured it was a quarter of that, honestly. Are you sure about that? Everything I'm seeing puts it at under a million for the city proper, 2 million for ...

I had enough trouble using 18.04 for a new server build that I backed off to 16.04. The software RAID-6 implementation seemed a little half-baked. I do plan to upgrade my primary desktop to it though.

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Speaking of big cities and their smells, Chicago Union Station reeks of diesel exhaust. Chronically underfunded Metra struggles (and fails) to meet air quality standards. I've learned that you never want to be in the car adjacent to the engine on the outbound (evening) trip, because that means you'r...

As I've noted in the other thread, I've never had any flashing issues; this may be because I've not yet tried flashing one of them from IR to IT (I typically just disable the RAID boot support in the IR BIOS settings). Hopefully Waco will chime in shortly, as he's clearly dealt with a lot more of th...

Russian Circles - Station (2008)

More instrumental rock (Wikipedia calls them "Post-Metal"... WTF is that anyway?) from a local Chicago-area band (that I've never seen live).

I'm quite enjoying this TBH.

I've been having a debate with myself over the ethics of turning around and RMAing the defective HDD direct to WD.
