Ahh, I guess I missed the part about 2 displays. You would need a KVMP that supports two monitors then. Those start to get expensive.

Re: Thunderbolt in ASUS ROG Strix B550-F???

I don't think that switch will work because I need to connect my laptop to the dock via Thunderbolt 3. As I've mentioned earlier, nobody makes Thunderbolt 3 KVMP switches. Also that KVMP switch is for 2 computers sharing 1 monitor, I have 2 monitors. The switch goes downstream of the dock, not betw...

This is what KVMP switches are for. Unfortunately DisplayPort ones are still a bit pricey (but they've come down a lot since a couple of years ago).

Re: What speed is my RAM, really?

Personally, I go by whatever CPU-Z tells me. In your case, just under 1500mhz (x2) to get 3000mhz. or rather 1499.1 x 2 = 2998.2mhz The OP was confused that the SPD tab (which is in CPU-Z!) appeared to be telling you otherwise. Yup. And JAE explained the difference between SPD timings and actual ti...

Vent fan in the master bath. Motor was screeching. Took it apart, cleaned and oiled the bearings.

Didn't take much longer than it would've to identify and order the correct replacement part, and it's one less piece of junk in the landfill.

Things were heading down long before Corona hit. By the time Corona shut everything down, TR already did not have any staff left (nor the budget) to send representatives to industry events.

Probably in the same general ballpark. But I'm pretty sure the ones that are designed to be USB-powered spin up slowly to avoid over-taxing the port's power capabilities.

Re: 10 slot USB Powered HUB...use limit?

There was one surprise...one brand (Ankar?) stated "do not run external hard drives on their powered hubs". Even tho the listed power for the hub was ample for an external hard drive. Don't know what's going on there. Don't want to burn anything out. Mechanical HDDs can draw several times...

Re: 10 slot USB Powered HUB...use limit?

As long as the hub's power brick is capable of supplying the full amount of power needed by the drives it should work. USB 2.0 or 3.x? 5 DVD drives are not going to be able to run at anywhere near full speed if it is all being funneled through a single USB 2.0 connection. With all drives running at ...

Maybe try coding something up in Python to scan the directory and delete it programmatically?

Re: Unexplainable shut down/hibernation event

Sounds like a crash of some sort, not hibernation. If it happens again try pinging it from another system on the network. If it is still responding to network pings, my guess would be a display driver or GPU crash. If it isn't responding to pings, then the OS is likely wedged. You may be able to fin...

Sprint used to have some sort of app for this (intended use was to put it on your kids' phones). Maybe your carrier has something similar?

IIRC there's also a way to share your location (Google timeline) with family members on Andriod. (I've never used that feature though.)

Re: Any issue using a molex switch to turn off HDDs?

USB1 would be rather painful; the initial transfer would take a couple of weeks. I'm not aware of anyone selling USB1 docks/enclosures. (Were they ever a thing?) USB2 is "good enough" if you're not in a hurry. USB3 will help some with mechanical HDDs, and is a must if you want to take adva...

Re: Any issue using a molex switch to turn off HDDs?

If it's just being used for offline backup, even USB 2.0 is "good enough". Fire it up before you go to bed, disconnect it in the morning. But eSATA/USB3 are obviously better, since they'll more than keep up with a mechanical HDD.

1. 3.5" hop swap bay
2. 2.5" hot swap bay
3. optical drive

Could've skipped any/all of the above and used external docks and/or a USB optical instead, but as I noted previously, putting 'em in bays reduces cable clutter.

What for?

FWIW I find it useful to have a couple of hot swap bays. Less cable clutter than using an external dock.

I also debated whether to include an optical drive in my latest build. I ended up installing one since I already had an extra one on hand.
