To the people responding with posts indicating that this system is a rip-off, please note that the OP is 4 years old. The thread just got resurrected by someone who is trying to help an elderly friend who already owns one.

Re: WOW! Computer for Seniors

An elderly friend has one of these computers. She wanted to get windows on it. By depressing "delete" repeatedly during boot up it will go to the bios screen. The bios is a version of MSI's click bios. Unfortunately I did not make a note of the bios settings for the original install, and ...

Re: Fun with Linux software RAID

Do any of the SMART attributes look funny? Is the firmware on the drive up to date? I've seen drives do some awfully funky things over the years and sometimes a power cycle of the drive would resolve any issues. Yeah, I checked the SMART attributes, and they looked normal. Haven't checked wheth...

Latest chapter: Was copying the final volume over from the old server, and it was going S-L-O-W. Determined that the problem was one of the new drives in the new server's RAID array. For whatever reason, it was running at a fraction of the speed of the other drives, and holding back the performance ...

Re: Technology purchasing and "moments of weakness"

BD-R support in Linux is so half-baked. Shouldn't it be practically the same as CDs and DVDs? That's what I assumed when I bought the BD drive and media. I apparently assumed wrong. Optical discs are such a lousy tech, that from my own experience back in 2004 college people are willing to buy relat...

Re: Technology purchasing and "moments of weakness"

A 5-pack of BD-R. :) The only reason I regret doing that is because the BD-R support in Linux is so half-baked. I intended to use them for archiving stuff long-term, but was only able to get a successful burn about half the time. I tried multiple burning applications, two different drives (an inter...

A Schiit Fulla 2. My first and only experiment with a standalone DAC (or DAC/amp, in this case). A $100 volume knob. $100 for a quality external DAC with flexible input and output options doesn't seem out of line to me. Depending on the quality of your previous DAC, the headphones/speakers you are ...

My spare parts box says I have a weakness for good sales on case fans that I don't need. I usually only bite when they're SUPER on sale, so it's a box full of case fans I've paid peanuts for, but... I have a weakness for good sales in general, and also tend to hang on to a lot of used but still fun...

I am old enough that I remember the days when Mazda's entire product line was rotary engine based. In my mind, they will forever be associated with this TV commercial (I believe it is from 1973): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHzeGEHWMjo

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

How do the "collet" style ones attach to the case? Or are they effectively just a spacer attached to the back of the motherboard, but not anchored to the case itself? I prefer to anchor the motherboard firmly to the case at all mounting points, if possible.

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

I have not seen those come with a case in a while. IIRC I had a few cases that used those a decade or so back? I agree, they do make mobo installation easier since you're not trying to simultaneously line things up and put the first screw in. But I also felt like they made the motherboard slightly l...

For the interested, my car has a condenser pinhole leak. They refilled it but it'll cost me 900 for the part, plus labor to repair it. My trade in value is above what I owe on it, highly considering getting rid of it. Mazda has really left a bad taste in my mouth. My first, and likely last. A 2.5 y...

Re: Fun with Linux software RAID

Yeah, I don't really need fast since my network is still plain ol' Gb Ethernet. The array reshape and file system resize to add the 2 repurposed disks from the old server went without incident. 14 TB ought to hold me for a while! We also had a brief power outage this morning. The big array came back...

And what spins me out every time I read that is- No matter how far we've come, I estimate 80% of electricity is still generated using "STEAM" Well, unless you're using photovoltaics or wind/water turbines, you're probably generating electricity from heat somehow. Water is cheap, non-toxic...

Re: Fun with Linux software RAID

That's kind of frightening actually. I don't mind auto-detection of a USB stick but I don't want auto-merge in a RAID array (especially when it goes wonky). Is there a service you can turn off to avoid that issue? I used a simple mdadm setup for a RAID1 system and I remember that you had to go thro...

Fun with Linux software RAID

I'm in the process of moving from a home file server with multiple RAID-1 volumes to one with a single large RAID-6 volume. Both are running Ubuntu Linux (14.04 LTS for the old one, 16.04 LTS for the new), with Linux software RAID. A few observations: 1. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS RAID seems to have issues (d...

For a while, we've been having a little bit of cold air leaking out around the door seal (lower left corner, right by the handle) on the freezer compartment of our refrigerator. I'm sure it was hurting efficiency, but I hadn't gotten around to dealing with it. So the other day I was looking at it tr...

For me probably the motherboard. Assuming your other components aren't complete junk, it's the piece which has the biggest potential impact on system stability. FWIW I had switched to mATX about 10 years ago, but switched back to ATX during the Socket AM3+ generation due to the total lack of decent ...
