Would be a much smaller issue if I hadn't bought a number of the crappy 1st-gen Cree bulbs. They account for nearly all of the failures.

3) mATX mobo/case places the GPU closer to the bottom panel fan for more direct airflow path. 4) Shorter front-back case dimension is better because it places the front panel fans closer to the CPU/GPU Overall airflow is probably more important than proximity of the CPU/GPU to the intakes. Re: YALBT (Yet Another LED Bulb Thread)

Yeah, I've been scratching my head over how to dispose of dead LED bulbs too. You can try Batteries+Bulbs, I know they take CFL bulbs for a fee. There's a list of bulb types they take on their web site: https://www.batteriesplus.com/t/recycling/Light-Bulb LED is conspicuously absent. Paying someone...

Re: YALBT (Yet Another LED Bulb Thread)

Recently, I had my first LED bulb failure. A non-dimmable Walmart $2.44 60watt equivalent that ran continuously at 8.5watts for two years and three months upside down in a surface mount ceiling fixture on a three year warranty. I took it to the service desk in an original box with the receipt and t...

Re: Case selection for silence, on air?

As an aside, my current work/play space is a basement room. My current system is in my storage area, literally on the other side of cinder block wall, through which many years ago I drilled a large-diameter hole, and ran long DVI-D and HDMI cables through. That has been perfect silence (and also pe...

@Chrispy_ - Are you sure the problematic batteries weren't NiCd? NiMH are less affected by the "memory effect" than NiCd. And lithium-based battery tech doesn't age particularly well either.

TFW... You're building a custom Linux kernel with out-of-tree drivers, and the kernel build fails because the Makefile for one of the out-of-tree drivers is incompatible with the "-j" option (multi-threaded make).

Re: How to delete a system dynamic partition

@blahsaysblah - Dynamic partitions and UEFI are not tied to each other AFAIK. You can have either one without the other. At least, this was the case in earlier versions of Windows. The best way to ensure that there's no partition cruft left to mess up your new install is to back up all of the data p...

I've thought about moving to Alaska later in my life, when I'm closer to retirement age. I'm not exactly a people person so the farther away I am from the big mob of screaming apes and their self-immolating PoliSci overlords the happier I'll be. And given the nature of what I do for a living, it's ...

I've not seen a single ad in the operating system . In apps? Yes. From the OS? No. You think OS X, iOS, Linux, or Android are any better from that perspective? Not even close. None of my Linux apps show me ads. If you didn't purchase the product, you are the product. Most desktop Linux distr...

The Kaypro basically killed Osborne. Some of it was self-inflicted. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect Sure, they made a lot of bad decisions. But if Kaypro hadn't grabbed most of the market niche they occupied, they would've probably survived for at least another product generation (if n...

Re: Should I buy: 4x8GB DDR3-2400 (G.Skill Ripjaws) for $160?

Well, with the media encoding and VMs, your proposed upgrade sounds like a reasonable way to get some extra resources for that without having to shell out for a new platform and DDR4. 8GB is really tight to be running VMs, and getting enough DDR4 for a new build is gonna cost a LOT.

If the RAM hasn't been abused, that's a very good price these days (as I'm sure you're aware). Are you sure your motherboard is compatible with the Xeon? Just because it is the same socket type does not mean it has BIOS support. I also see that the base clock on the Xeon is much lower (though turbo ...

I don't think there's any overlap between the Elitebook and Envy lines, but it's always good to check. The recall did affect some Probook products but those are still a lot closer to consumer-class derp than the actually fairly decent corporate stuff. With HP/Dell/Lenovo notebooks, I say either go ...

Some further thoughts on Ayreon... (Been listening to their entire back catalog courtesy of Spotify these past few days.) They (he? I guess it's really a one-man project with a lot of guest musicians/vocalists) strike me as a crazy mish-mash of '70s Prog-isms (even including occasional Ian Anderson ...

I am a little confused by your post. Are you saying it didn't POST with the original motherboard, and won't POST with the new one either? Or that the old motherboard works but the new one does not?
