I would hazard a guess that the percentage is small. But even a small percentage of a really huge number is still a pretty big number.

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

USB 3.0 micro-B style connector has got to be just about the dumbest connector design ever. I understand why they did what they did (backward compatibility with USB 2.0 micro-B and not enough room to do something clever like they did with the A connector), but damn... what a horrible hack.

Re: New drive suggestions?

This is spot-on, but I'll note that the zones are nowhere near a few hundred MB in size on drive-managed drives (think tens of MB). It's not a published spec, but it's been determined experimentally on the commonly available drives via a few very interesting papers (and those numbers hold true from...

Yeah, this is gonna suck. Although I don't develop in Java myself, we have massive amounts of Java code here where I work. There's already some internal chatter about how it may eventually impact us.

Re: New drive suggestions?

Does "drive-managed" mean they're zeroing out empty space like TRIM on an SSD? No... SMR drives don't have wear leveling issues, but (like SSDs) some trickery is required to make them look like a "normal" random-access disk device. SMR drives are divided into "zones", ...

Unless Apple was planning on immediately leveraging those new features, they probably don't care.

I've used Monoprice to stock up on Ethernet cables, and there was also a point at which I got pissed off at how many marginal SATA cables I had in my spare parts box, chucked most of 'em, and ordered a pile of new ones from Monoprice.

Not to knock Amazon / NewEgg / B&H (who is that?), but when I comes to cables I'd check Monoprice first. Yes, Monoprice has the best prices on quality cables. But for small quantities you may actually come out ahead ordering the exact same cables on Amazon to get the Prime shipping, even though...

Yes, as the post FF linked notes, Aukey is reasonable as well. I also own one of these . Have only had it for a week or so, but so far seems to work just as well as the Anker ones (i.e. I have had no issues). One minor downside of the Aukey one is that it has a captive cable, so if the cable wears o...

I have a serious need for exactly that. I have several USB audio devices that I constantly use (MIDI controllers, interface, a record player, etc.) and my laptop only has 3 ports. Plus it would be nice to only plug in one cable and be done with it. Question though, would I see a significant reducti...

Re: really weird charging problem with my V20

Just get an Anker charger. Other cheap ones are likely made in China and have forged safety markings. As of ~2 years ago Anker became my "go to" brand for small gadgets like USB chargers. They're well built, do what they claim, and (while not the cheapest) are reasonably priced. Their com...

Can you borrow someone else's charger for a few hours to verify that it is the charger causing the problem, and not some weird issue with your phone's charging circuitry? Two points: 1. Density has gone up quite a bit, so even the lower RPM drives still reach nearly 200 MB/s sequential at the beginning of the platters. It is doubling the cost of diffusing the chips since all four die/dice receive the same indium/gold plating and soldering to the IHS (and also wouldn't require the use of two non-functional die which could bite them later when yields improve). If yields improve to the point where they don't have en...

You totally glazed over the fact I was on a high speed train half way across the world and remote performance was fine. Local VM’s are passé. AWS or a dedicated home/work server are the way to go. IMO if you plan to run anything with a modern GUI in a VM while also using the host OS for other tasks, 16GB should be considered a bare minimum. 32GB would be better. A decidated VM server is the way to go. 1. Given that the OP is looking at a MBP, I assume mobility is part of the use case. Using ...

Opeth - Morningrise (1996) Their 2nd album. Great material marred by some seriously weedy production. My biggest gripe is that the drums sound like they were recorded from the far end of a football field, then mixed about 10 dB too low. C'mon, this is aggressive music -- the drums need to have some ...

The truly sad thing about that horrific Word hack was that there was theoretically a "right" way to do it (OLE), which was completely unworkable due to MS's inability to deliver a stable OLE interface with MS Word. When the official way isn't usable, you need to resort to that sort of crap...
