Re: AMD Marketing Fails Again

There are probably some good deals out there though (AMD marketing fail notwithstanding). Well maybe a cheap laptop, maybe? Yeah, that's kind of my point. Best bang for the buck is rarely (if ever) the new shiny thing. My personal laptop is an EliteBook 8460p, which is bordering on prehistoric by s...

Re: AMD Marketing Fails Again

Sorry AMD but no way Hell will I buy a Bristol Ridge system as that would be a silly thing to do. Most of the listed systems are laptops. I'll bet OEMs and retailers are using Black Friday to clear the decks of the older Bristol Ridge stuff. Yeah, this marketing campaign borders on false advertisin...

Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve (1995) An insane mash-up of extreme metal (complete with screamed vocals), placid interludes, and whacked out jazzy chromatic legato guitar solos (in the vein of Allan Holdsworth). I've never done it, but I imagine there are some potential opportunities with commodity parts that tend to have volatile pricing (e.g. RAM, as noted above). Maybe GPUs too, if you happen to buy right before the next big crypto-currency bubble hits.

FWIW active adapter is always a safe bet, as it should also be compatible with ports which only need a passive adapter.

Artificial sweetener affects your body’s ability to process sugar.i don’t have the article link handy, but the upshot is that artificial sweetener isn’t the free ride everyone thought. IIRC the issue is that it primes your body to expect incoming sugar, and then when you don't get it, things kinda ...

A little bit of brown sugar can work in darker beers too. Especially in English styles, where sugar and/or molasses have been traditional ingredients. Somewhat counter-intuitively, adding sugar to a beer recipe doesn't tend to make it sweeter. Brewer's yeast loves simple sugars, and ferment them com...

You may still want to consider replacing the data cable.

Or at least connect/disconnect it several times, to scrape off any corrosion on the contacts (the "wiping" action as the connector is inserted and removed actually helps clean it).

I missed that bit, but the point still applies. The reward circuits associated with sweets fire based on the sweetness rather than the absorption of calories, so the cravings are going to happen no matter what. Diet soda has an effect on gut flora too, so there can be an adjustment period regardles...

I've seen bizarre boot order bugs too. A lot of older systems (and probably some newer ones too) just have weird issues with boot order and detection of boot drives. You'd think this would've been a solved problem by now given the age of the PC ecosystem, but apparently not.

Personally I try to avoid malloc() and its ilk. For one, usually RAM is limited on small MCUs. For another, if it isn't VERY carefully managed, your heap can get fragmented on a smaller processor over time to the point you can no longer get a new chunk of continuous memory even if there is plenty a...

I've had over a dozen IT jobs in my career. I didn't end up getting a single one from applying directly. It was always either being known by someone in the local industry or a headhunter, every time. Could also be dodgy cables (power or data); I'd try a different power lead and new data cable. Or test the drive in a different system.

Most professional hiring is done through online job sites and recruiting firms these days. One lesson I learned the hard way a number of years back: Never buy "new old stock" UPSes on clearance, unless it's still a good price after you factor in the cost of a new battery pack. They go bad just sitting, so the factory-installed pack is probably close to worthless.

Even so shouldn't programmers still need to know how to memory management? Part of the point of languages with background GC (Python and Java, to name two) is that no, the programmer does not need to worry about memory management. It is all supposed to work magically behind the scenes. And in gener...
