Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Music works in mysterious ways sometimes. I was sitting on my train, waiting for it to pull out and listening to some music, and this song came on. Just something about the lyrics, her voice, and the simple, understated arrangement suddenly moved me to tears. What an emotional sucker punch...

Re: Asus B350M-E + R3 2200G No BIOS Flash

The people doing these are enthusiasts generally, they might very well take the extra chip and build another system with it be it a NAS box or a basic game system for a child or an Office machine for their mom. Seems it would be better to try to get more systems (and sell more motherboards) out the...

Re: I7 8700 reaching 100C

It is basically a closed-loop heat pump which uses the energy of the heat you are trying to remove to drive the loop... Seems like calling it "air cooling" is really underselling the whole thing. It's still "air cooling" from the user's perspective. It's a bunch of metal fins wi...

Do not bother with FORTRAN now (if ever). Get a solid footing in fundamentals using a widely used language first. Learn FORTRAN later if you need it for a paying gig. You're like the dog in "Up!". SQUIRREL! This! There are pockets of Fortran (of all types) in the wild but learning it won'...

Re: Stupid and terrible software.

Users of lab equipment tend to be scientists and engineers, many of whom will have at least a passing familiarity with software development. I suspect most of the custom stuff is coded in C (not FORTRAN) though, at least for the front-end control/monitoring functions. There may still be a fair bit o...

Re: Stupid and terrible software.

After hearing about issues such as this, I wonder if users of laboratory equipment should write the software themselves. Why do you think FORTRAN still exists? Yes but how many end users write applications themselves? Enough to create much of the Linux ecosystem? A lot of Open Source software gets ...

We're still supposed to use some sort of stupid Notes plugin to request PTO. I just ask my supervisor in person, and he's good with that. I don't think I have opened the native Notes client in over 6 months.

Heat pipes don't work that way. They are actually copper tubes (or pipes if you will) that have a liquid in them. Wanted to post here to lol at this, then did some background reading and :o They also contain a wick material which helps pull the condensed liquid back to the base of the HSF. Otherwis...

I keep a few dozen various-sized Honda and Toyota retainer clips on hand at all times. Pro tip: don't buy them at any auto parts store unless it's an emergency, since you'll pay $5+ for a handful and probably end up with the wrong size anyway . Go for the pre-emptive strike: ... If Arch/Manjaro are requiring reboots every time you install updates, they're doing something wrong. In general, the only time a reboot is necessary on Debian/Ubuntu is if you're replacing the kernel or device drivers. And even in those cases, you're free to keep working and postpone the reboot unti...

As I understand it, a fax can have the weight of law because it can be verified, whereas an email is way too readily spoofed. Yeah, the bit about keeping the HSF is bizarre. Either they've got a lifetime supply of them stockpiled somewhere and don't care about getting them back, or the beancounters decided that paying return shipping for the HSF was more cost and trouble than it was worth (it's likely a pretty low-end part...

IBM is also betting the farm on a pivot to the Cloud. They are, but I'm not sure they'll be able to really compete long term AWS and Azure for many businesses. It's a big market though, so can handle many players. I suspect they will have their niches regardless. But yeah, competing head-to-head wi...
