Hi, Linda! Do you have any other intensive uses for this laptop ? No Here's a search at Newegg for notebooks that include six-core Coffee Lake CPUs and GeForce GTX1060 or better graphics. $1000+tax would get you an Acer Aspire 7 A717-72G-700J - 17" and 6.7 lbs $1050+tax -120MIR would buy an MS...

Re: This should be in with laptops but you'll see why it isn't when read

Hi, Linda! Do you have any other intensive uses for this laptop besides moderate gaming? Guild Wars 2 isn't very demanding. Here's a search at Newegg for notebooks that include six-core Coffee Lake CPUs and GeForce GTX1060 or better graphics. $1000+tax would get you an Acer Aspire 7 A717-72G-700J -...

This should be in with laptops but you'll see why it isn't when read

First, a building pro will know the answer to this: where's the best place online to buy laptops these days? Whatever I decide on could be configurable because I already have the hard drive I want to use, Samsung 1 Tera SSD. Second: I used to game with Jae! I'm looking at about $1000 can go up a bit...

Re: Problem with vcore - pictures included

Great advice, thanks! Something broke my graphics card, probably replacing the paste was a good idea. Other than that, I'll just let things use up their little tech lives, then start fresh.

Thanks!

Re: Problem with vcore - pictures included

Sorry, back again :-). That Asus tool gave me the vcore error again, so I reseated my cpu. The arctic silver was pretty funky looking so I cleaned it up , put a fresh coat on, and things seem ok. It was very difficult to put the fan on, because the plastic feet had spread, but 3 out of 4 are snug so...

Re: Problem with vcore - pictures included

Well, I guess it was the graphics card. I swapped out the 460 and put in a 310.

Thanks for the help, and ty for the HW tool!

Re: Problem with vcore - pictures included

The first picture only shows the tool when no error is occurring. When the error occurs, a popup window tells me error, vcore 0.0. But I had not noticed any difficulty so I just ignored it. The second picture really shows the error. It is hard to see, because the lines running horizontally are ble a...

Re: Problem with vcore - pictures included

Ew to both answers. So I might need a new MB? My cpu is i5 3570 3.4 Gh.. Maybe its time for a new mb and cpu set? Of course I will try to reset the cpu first, but just wondering... If I upgrade, would I need a better PS? I know I'm overdue for a new graphics card. See what happens when a computer hi...

Problem with vcore - pictures included

Yay, you are still here!!! I don't want to buy a new computer, or build one. This is my Frankenstein. Yes, its pretty old. Lately I have been getting VCore errors in red, saying zero from this tool. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n280/linda092/monitortool.png I didn't know what it meant so ignor...

Re: Opening a laptop to install stuff

Easiest upgrade ever. I used Samsung's Migration software, and no problems whatsoever. I know it's not an absolutely clean install, but it's close enough. Whoever refurbished it before selling it to me had done all the crap removal. I already had to download some essentials from Asus to get the back...

Re: Opening a laptop to install stuff

If you do perform a clean install, you may want to read up on this util first and use it, so you can make a custom restore partition for future usage. I've just started using it regularly, but I'd endorse it. It's not a backup, it's a custom recovery, please keep the difference in mind (backup has ...

Re: Opening a laptop to install stuff

I mighy have missed that, but... You're replacing your original HDD with an SSD and will be restoring your OS onto SSD using backup image you made from HDD? If yes - you should probably do a fresh OS install instead, so Win7 can properly detect SSD and do a proper partition alignment as well as oth...

Re: Opening a laptop to install stuff

Yep, the memory was easy. The hard part was getting the back case off because there was a strip of glue holding it snugly, and I didn't want to bend too hard for fear of putting a permanent bend in the back. But it's fine. The tip of angling the torx thingy and adjusting all the screws after they we...

Re: Opening a laptop to install stuff

Wow, I am so glad I asked. Lots of great tips and the videos will help. I don't think I'll be having a glass of wine while I do this, that's for sure. Like the one guy on the video said, it's like surgery. I'll let you all know how it goes... And if I mess up, does anyone live near South Jersey, US?

Opening a laptop to install stuff

Please excuse my hesitation: I have never opened a new laptop before, only old ones. I have an Asus UX32VD-DB71 that I am going to put new ram into (getting the ram tomorrow). I got the Torx screwdrivers to open the case. If I turn the laptop on its back there are 12 screws, do I remove all of them?...

Re: Advice needed for a new laptop

The ram will help a lot im sure, i notice a lag in videos playing. what player are you using? i use media player classic HC with LAV filters and MadVR. Playback is butter smooth with 1080p MKV files. I just used Windows Media Player. The videos I played were videos I ripped from dvds awhile ago. Ma...

Re: Advice needed for a new laptop

Im liking the laptop very well, now that i got the backlite working. I like computering in the dark, i have a lighted keyboard on my desktop too. I don't remember the details now, but I did look at the Lenovos and ruled them out because of the keyboard and the weight. When you're as ancient as I am,...

Re: Advice needed for a new laptop

Ok Thanks! I'll get the ram upgrade and hold off a bit on the hard drive too.
On a side note, how do you get the backlit keyboard to work? I pressed the Fn button and the buttons along the top that I believe makes it work, but it didn't. Is there a trick to it? Sorry about all the questions!

Re: Advice needed for a new laptop

Just ordered the Same one as vandy and Jae. The backlit keyboard, dedicated graphics, ips screen and processor sold me. Also win7: I don't want win 8 just yet with the touch screen. I get it tomorrow, yay! Could you point me at the 2 upgrades? Ram looks easy but the hard drive might not be. What is ...

Re: Advice needed for a new laptop

Why are we not talking about a T430 or T430s from the outlet? You can get a REALLY decent laptop for not very much. Heck, you could even get a new one from the regular lenovo site for a good price with an awesome keyboard, a good 1600x900 IPS screen, Intel Wi-fi, and lenovo durability. edit: This s...

Re: Advice needed for a new laptop

Thanks for the suggestions, yogibear. I looked at the Asus and Lenono because I know those brands and you're right, they are expensive. I wouldn't mind so much spending the money, but not for such a small screen. Does lightweight have to equal extremely small screen? My Dell has a 15 inch screen and...

Advice needed for a new laptop

I would like to replace my older heavy dell vostro for a laptop that is as lightweight as possible, yet reliable and of good quality. I have no experience with brands other than dell for laptops. It has to have windows, and I would like it to be able to run minecraft as the only game, it will be use...

So just to update... I contacted WD, they emailed back saying it would be a day and I would get a response, but it may be longer because they are under a heavy workload at this time. I waited 4 days, and then sent a reply to that email saying that I really needed help. No response at all. (I did ela...

Re: Intel RST playing tricks on me

Wow, that was an interesting article, but most of the people there were using RAID. I'm not. I just have 2 drives in my box, the second drive is partitioned and all the partitions disappear after a bit. But what I took away from that article is that I might be able to get help from WD. I have a simp...

I don't think it worked. I set it, and then 5 minutes later my drive was gone. I rebooted, and its back. Maybe the setting needed a reboot to work? This is crazy.

Re: Intel RST playing tricks on me

Ok. I never even knew that setting was there. I already have Never for both my monitor and putting the computer to sleep. Which by the way, one of my 8th graders got a science award for doing experiments on which saves more energy: using the sleep mode or turning the computer off. She said her findi...
