Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

isn't the "fresh start" option supposed to preserve your data? if so, that's the one i mean. Fresh start deletes all your apps though, which is what'll take me a long time to set back up. The data itself might take me roughly an hour to copy to and from something that's fast. At this poin...

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

That is the same as doing an in place upgrade, which is also the same as a build update. Unless you mean the "fresh start" option (which is the only option I have on my current build), which is a built in reinstall.

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Yeah, just tried it. No change. Guess that rules out Nvidia. I tried logging into my MS account on the spare drive and weirdly, it seems to still function just fine. I'm not really sure why, as I definitely tried a fresh install before (sometime last year). Perhaps something used to propagate but no...

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

Green teams features are too exclusive for me to consider red team basically ever. Freesync is nice (unarguably a better implemented solution than G-sync), but I use the streaming features of GeForce Experience weekly, and AMD doesn't have anything like that.

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

how would I sign in to both though?

I guess the first thing to try would be to use a driver cleaner to uninstall everything nvidia related and then reinstall that. What's that utility people use for such a thing? DD something I want to say.

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Finally, some progress! Ok, so out of the case, new PSU, tests did nothing... on my current windows install. I was hesitant to try a fresh install just yet as I'm out of bandwidth until the 5th (soon my local electric coop will have unlimited internet with ftth... soon), but I just copied the GW2 da...

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Try disconnecting almost everything non-essential. Disable onboard sound at the BIOS. Disable any other peripheral, onboard or not, that you do not absolutely need. Try connecting to the network via cable. Use a simple braindead keyboard and mouse. Record your frame times. Now tune the settings and...

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Yup, that's a fine showing in LatencyMon. :-? Maybe reset the BIOS, touch as few settings as possible, and try again? Most of what's left would seem to be settings that shouldn't be relevant, and that you might habitually set while assuming that irrelevance. Even going through reset BIOS -> fresh O...

I have tried this very experiment before to no avail. :( It's a great suggestion normally thought!

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

While all of that is certainly true. Wouldn't you agree that I should at least be able to consistently hit 60 FPS while staring at a wall? Because I cannot even do that. Also, wiggling the mouse AT ALL will drop the FPS, even while staring at no players, and no NPC's, to 40s or lower. I don't mean r...

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Sorry for the double post, but I tried LatencyMon... I don't see anything I don't expect to see topping this list. The DX graphics kernel tops the list of total execution by far. Then the latency monitor itself, which is no surprise. The next few are stuff like the kernel mode driver framework runti...

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Only thing that remains is PSU, Case, and drives. well, since you've already changed everything else, these are the next to check. you can try switching to a different PSU and drive, while running the system outside of the case. this should test all three components. When I tried the fresh install ...

Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Have you tried 1080 instead of 1200? Maybe something in GW2s render engine isn't optimized for 16:10. Also, both games you mention are MMOs, which means a variable you can't control for is the number of other players in the zone. MMOs that otherwise have very modest performance requirements can get...

Any mods? For neither game. Though I did install a few about an hour ago for ESO, I have yet to boot the game up with them. The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Ok, so awhile back I posted a thread here: https://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=119946&p=1359298#p1359298 I was having some strange GW2 performance issues. Seemed to be JUST that game, as all the benches indicated hardware was performing at specc or better. The only conclusion ...

Re: GTX 980

I recently managed to grab a 1080 for MSRP (499) as an upgrade to my 980. I'd say if you can spend that, and resell the 980 for 200-250 it might be worth it. Nvidia are supposed to drop new cards at some point though, so you may want to wait.

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

Only other thing I can think to try at this point is to swap cards with the 780 my friend has for a day or so and see if that changes things. It would be nice to know if it's something the game doesn't like about my card, or my processor.

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

I mean, yes, that is true, but Ivy at 4.3 is no slouch in single threaded performance. Either way, it seems nobody knows why a setup like mine wouldn't get the performance of lesser hardware. As I said earlier, I suppose it's time to build a new core of a machine. Coffee lake and Ryzen offer very go...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

Oh, I agree about NV being jerks. It's well known they do such things. I wish it weren't so. Even still, AMD doesn't have anything like shadowplay streaming, which I use all the time to play coop and other games with my brother over the internet. For people who don't care about such a feature though...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

AMD doesn't have feature parity with Nvidia enough for me to even consider them. The only thing AMD has that Nvidia doesn't is Freesync, which IS nice, but not nice enough for me to drop the rest of the niceties of green team. Also, this clearly isn't just a green team problem. If all nvidia cards r...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

Model limit set to lowest, model quality on highest. If you put that on lowest everybody becomes a super generic model that's not animated well. I've never seen a single thread hit 100% on my end. Load seems to be pretty evenly distributed across all 8.

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

One coffee lake drops I'll look into more comparisons. So here's the odd thing about shadows, my friend with the 780 says shadows do not load his GPU hardly at all, yet with mine they grind things down significantly. This has got to be something with 900 series and the weird way the shadows are done...

All good thoughts, but alas, they've been done. No, even at low and subsample it does not run at 100+. All the more indication that something is wrong. But with all the tests and ideas that have been thought out and tried in this thread I can't come to a conclusion except that the game is broken in ...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

Other than that, the typical developer's answer to software coding issues these days is to throw hardware at the problem. Put a Core i7-8700K on your Christmas wishlist. Yeah I guess. In all fairness my processor is what, 5+ years old now? I think I've gotten good mileage out of it. Though I've onl...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

No, but it might tell me if this problem is more than just me. I know people with cards equivalent to a 970 that run this game significantly better than I can.

And if we have the same issue, then it's likely this issue is effecting some series 900 cards at least. It would make my problem less... odd.

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

Hard to say if that's the same as my problem, but sounds about how my performance goes. Perhaps it's a problem with some 900 series cards?

If you could test with a single card and report performance that would help a lot. SLI being SLI means your problem could be completely different from mine.

I should specify. He is an IRL friend. Lives in the next town. We have the same ISP. Same hops to the server. He has a slower connection in terms of throughput though, but that doesn't matter in this regard, latency should be comparable. As for latency, I do pay attention to the in game latency. It ...

Yep, 64 bit. As for my internet... well, wouldn't a tracert be more revealing than a ping? Also, one of my friends and fellow tech dudes has a similar connection to me. He's the one with the 780. He can run the game better than I can. Something hilarious happened while testing some things earlier. I...

So, I went into the BIOS and put the memory frequency to 1333, rebooted the game and no change... to make sure I'd done it right I booted up CPU-Z, and noticed that it claims the max frequency is 800. Weird. Must've set something wrong I though. Went back into the BIOS to set it back to auto, and ma...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

I'd say the slowness is more just consistently slow than stuttery. I did used to have a huge stuttery problem, but a clean driver install and game reinstall fixed that, now it just runs slow everywhere almost. I rounded up to 10% I should say, that's the highest I ever saw it at. Often it was 6% or ...
