Re: Motherboard + CPU Swap In Win10 WOW!

I've had exactly the same experience in Win7 and Win8.

ArchLinux is even better: as long as you have an untainted kernel, it will boot right up with no delays for "getting devices ready" or anything like that.

Re: Noise Cancelling Headphones

I call BS on all the "static pressure" theory. More likely it is an effect caused by the unnatural way the noise cancellation alters ambient sounds. Ever notice how things sound really strange if you hold a balloon near your ear? IMO it is probably something similar. BS or not, this effec...

Re: Noise Cancelling Headphones

I have been using the Bose QC25 for noise cancelling while playing the drums with my band for the last three months. Impressions: + They do an excellent job in reducing sound pressure levels. They eliminate the "long tail" of sound from the kick drum (low frequency), tom toms (medium frequ...

Does this improve GPU acceleration at all? Vbox 4.x was pretty horrible and did not even support KMS on linux guests.

Re: Is Ubuntu Really Robust?

Well, I used a DVD because I don't have a spare flash drive that I can back up somewhere and use for Ubuntu. I'd hate to copy tons of files back and forth. And besides, it's an ISO file. What, I should refrain from burning it to disc? For the same reason you should use a USB stick to install Window...

Re: Question on current-gen Intel vs. AMD processors

To be fair, recompiling software won't magically give you SSE2 support. The compiler might insert one or two instructions here and there, but you won't actually see any significant improvement until you change your memory layout to fit SSE2 and rewrite your math using compiler intrinsics. SSE2 is no...

Re: BF4 Mantle Thread

It's been difficult to work with the built in logger from Battlefield 4. I think I managed to successfully put to work the logger with MSI Afterburner. I run the game in Direct3D mode so the MSI AB works, play the mission then restart the mission without getting out of BF4 so MSI AB keeps working. ...

Backdoor in AMD GPU drivers?

Apparently, the OpenCL library for AMD GPUs contains a string named "osTestBackdoorATI". Great job, AMD engineers! This discovered by @hashcat , of oclHashCat fame, and picked up by Phoronix . It will be interesting to see how their PR department will try to spin this over the next few days.

There is a Chrome and Firefox plugin called "Fit to width" that reflows text when you zoom.

It is similar to what Opera used to have built-in (but doesn't work nearly as smoothly.)

Re: 2560 x 1440 imac vs pc ips 1080p underwelmed!

There can always be the aspects of comparing one monitor to another, but the Dell listed may very well use the LG 23" version of the same panel Apple is using in that iMac. I still want a 27" Nyquist limited monitor only needs to be oooh 600ppi. I know what you mean, but I just have to be...

Re: 2560 x 1440 imac vs pc ips 1080p underwelmed!

The 1440p and 1080p monitors have similar DPI, so you will not see much of a difference. Try running Skyrim on a 15'' retina MBP, if you ever get the chance, using a high-res texture mod. Enter a house and look at the tapestries on the walls - they look stunning in a way that no amount of AA can app...

Re: Samsung 830 Corruption Woes...

I have encountered CRC errors when connecting the 830 to older Intel SATA controllers. As far as I can tell, this is a matter of hardware incompatibility - the same SSDs work perfectly fine on different controllers from both Intel and AMD. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any kind of compa...

Re: Why not display frame time data in a familiar format?

The funny thing is that frame times have been the standard performance metric for game development for as long as I can remember. Which translates into 10 years give or take one. And now it is 2013 and the "gamer crowd" is suddenly amazed and horrified at this revelation! Kudos to TR for j...

Re: Good SNES emulator for Mac?

No Mac port of BSNES? I'm porting BSNES to native Cocoa (right now it requires X11 but it's no fun.) This is by far the best SNES emulator out there, as far as accuracy is concerned. SNES9X is the second best choice, with significantly lower CPU requirements (so it may be a better choice on the roa...

Re: Bode Plot problem

Recall that the frequency axis is logarithmic (0.1, 1, 10 etc). In this example, your s+1 pole will be at a frequency of 10^(-1) = 0.1 rad/sec.

If in doubt, use wolframalpha to validate your solution:

Re: Downgrade from IE9 to IE8--How?

The only 100% safe way is to use System Restore to move to an older restore point. Alternatively, you could try to uninstall IE9 from add/remove programs -> Windows features, and then reinstall IE8. This might work - or it might not. Anything else won't be 100% safe and might cause damage to your sy...

There are many good PC games out there, but only a few manage to become 'great' games. What separates a great game from a good game? To me, it's the 'feeling'. Great games manage to create an atmosphere that stimulates the imagination and sucks you right in. My all-time favourite games (subjectively...

Re: Dell UltraSharp U2312HM for $229+tax

I've seen this monitor in person and own the previous model U2311h. It's a pretty sweet deal, pretty much the best monitor in its class, at this price range (easily better than the LG 231 eIPS we bought at work). Pros + Great for gaming (0.6ms input lag, whereas most monitors have >10ms). No ghostin...

Re: Atom D525 vs E-350

On Windows, the E-350 beats the pants out of the D525 due to a vastly superior GPU (DX11, GL4.2, OpenCL, 1080p video acceleration). On Linux, much of this advantage evaporates, as most GPU prowess is thrown out of the window and everything relies on the CPU (which is pretty bad on both chips). The s...

Thinkpad T420 is awesome and not too costly. Pick that and a 120GB SSD and it will last him half a decade. Make sure to pick the 1600x900 screen, it's much better for productivity. Thikpad X220 is another great choice, if he values mobility. Pick the IPS monitor (just $50 more!) add a SSD and it's a...

Gnome 2 sucked. Gnome 3 is better in all regards. It's faster, it's more usable and it's much more integrated. Use it for a couple of days and you'll understand. Use it as in *really* use, don't just boot it, see it's different and say "it sucks". I actually prefer Gnome 3 over Win7 and th...

Sandy Bridge integrated graphics are better compared to, say, the GMA 4500HD. Compared to even a cheap Radeon (e.g. a 6450 ), SB graphics are a joke.
