Re: Dumb idea/thought experiment

IIRC, one of the big advantages of HBM is the lower power draw than GDDR5, but I'm not sure if it's lower power than DDR4. I know some budget laptops use DDR3 instead of GDDR5 simply because of power consumption, and that within the power budget, using DDR3 frees up some watts and allows higher cor...

As a retro computer collector, years form now I hope to be able to buy the stock of these chips really cheap off of eBay to make a retro time machine. I think latency and minimum frame rates when gaming are noticeably better with more recent platforms but whether you think the extra smoothness is worth it is not for me to guess.
I'd buy the monitor and wait for the dust to settle on the upcoming platforms and not rush into it.

Re: Pentium Anniversary temperatures

At idle, the temperatures are hovering between 45-55, and they usually hit around 70 before my computer restarts. What are you using to measure the CPU temperature? If it is running at 70C that is nowhere near high enough to crash the system as the CPU is rated for 95C or so. CPUs tend to throttle ...

Re: Hello from SAM, and AMD

Good to see AMD having the balls to turn up so welcome although I can see more downside for this than upside; having a marketing guy talk to tech enthusiasts is a risky proposition. With AMD’s difficulties in the CPU area and the perception (from my experience) that they have been prone to delays fo...

Re: *sigh* [insert mini-rant here]

A minor issue is websites that reset preferences when you change one parameter. E.g. You have selected to sort by price and then change from say 4 to 8GB and they default back to another sort order. In the same vein are websites that have an option called something like Best Results (Dell) or custom...

Re: Next gen gaming = AMD CPU/GPU?

More cores gives very little benefit because few real-world applications are capable of using more than one or two. Always go with a smaller number of faster cores. Do keep in mind that the 4670K and 4770K are both quad core chips, the i7 just throws in a mostly useless marketing gimmick and a not-...

Speaking of disappointments, has anyone here seen the boxes for Haswell chips? I've seen them on Tigerdirect.com and quite frankly, I think it's a little freaky, with that human head. The read just screams "70's" or "80's", not sure which. I can't believe these are Intel boxes. ...

Re: A Few Reasons why Haswell Disapoints

If it’s true than an architecture can scale by a single magnitude in terms of power used then a range of roughly 8 to 80W covers what Haswell offers nicely. So I don’t see it as a compromised design for desktop usage just one that fits into the TDP limit that Intel has been using for the mainstream ...

Re: Where do You See Hardware in 2-4 years?

I'm going to say 16GB will be standard for a system without integrated RAM in 2-4 years simply because of manufacturing advances and chip density. Servers will be the big factor pushing this, and desktops will get what trickles down. 64GB of RAM will become standard when SDRAM gives way to NVRAM. I...

Re: Where do You See Hardware in 2-4 years?

4 years out 64gb ram will be mainstream as virtually all software goes 64 bit. Regardless of cost I hope that 64GB isn’t mainstream that soon as that would likely be more to do with software bloat than necessity. Most applications don’t really benefit much from being 64 bit and those that do have g...

Re: Where do You See Hardware in 2-4 years?

I strongly disagree with the 50-100% more IPC on the CPU side. 2-4 years is just one or two product cycles, and the pace of new hardware is definitely slowing down especially as manufacturers are starting to run into the physical limits of silicone. 50% may be possible over 4 years if Intel release...
