Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

I currently have a GTX 980 and a G-sync monitor. With that being said, I'd go with a Vega 64 and Freesync monitor given the cost of G-sync. In 2018, you have to have adaptive sync and Freesync makes the most sense economically.

Re: Battletech game coming out

I've backed myself into a corner in a system with missions too strong for my force. I need to reload saves from a few missions earlier unfortunately. So much progress will be lost, but I love this game.

Also head shots on my pilots seems to occur much more often.

Re: Battletech game coming out

I had a dropship fall on my 75 ton Black Knight... Had to redo an entire mission. *sigh* I don't think I was even on the red marks but maybe I was on the edge. It's fun to acquire the new and bigger 'Mechs. I'm wondering if 4 Assault is the "best" lance or they would just be too slow. Som...

This is a solid Battletech game. Yes, it is difficult so you have to constantly look at stats like evasion, use of the terrain, etc. This is potentially more fun to me than MechCommander from back in the day.

If you're a real pro, find a copy of Power DoLLs 1 in English for DOS or get the English translated ROM of Front Mission for the SNES. Old school RTS games were challenging as heck!

True. But I'm betting at least double the performance or better for enthusiasts. (..and I'm also betting that there will be plenty of enthusiasts that will purchase this.) Not even close. Gaming 99% uses FP32, and Titan V has 13.8 TFlops, not far ahead of Titan Xp's 12.1 TFlops. There are improveme...

Re: Intel i7-8700 vs 8700k

Even if you don't manually overclock the chip, the K variant has benefits with Z370 motherboards. It can turbo higher and the MCE (multi-core enchancement) feature on the motherboard will bump all core clockspeeds for you (to safe levels). With that being said, let me offer an alternative setup. Go ...

Save on the CPU and motherboard and get a Ryzen 7 1700 for $299 and with an AM4 ITX motherboard. You'll get twice the core and threads for less. This isn't a gaming build so Ryzen will perform well for you and add that extra layer of multi-threaded future-proofing.

I doubt AMD will have the resources or incentive to burden their new product with obsolete 16-bit legacy software support. But it's officially part of x86. My guess is that they'll fix it in a future core stepping. I run a Pentim 200MMX on Win98SE for 16-bit software. Real DOS on real hardware is b...

Not that I ever owned one, but I've been led to believe that Roland had the best MIDI sound back in the day. My Roland SC-55 works flawlessly with DOSBox in Windows 10 with my USB-MIDI cable (it's a Roland UM-ONE mk2). In fact, it now resides next to my main Win10 gaming rig. Pick one up if you're ...

Re: What's the last piece of tech you regret buying?

Several years ago I bought a GTX 760 2GB. I should have bought the 4GB because I later went with SLI. 760s in SLI have more than enough power to use the full 4GB frame buffer. I suffered when I played through Shadow of Mordor. I suppose it all worked out because it was my impetus for buying a GTX 98...

Apple has chosen Zen for their upcoming products. I doubt Zen will suck as bad as some of you seem to want it to. It'll be acceptable in our eyes; maybe not the fastest, but acceptable overall.

Re: Old Analog video sources to HDMI upconversion

For older game systems, it's recommended you get European SCART cables for them and convert the pure RGB signal coming out it. With the exception of the original NES, all NTSC and PAL consoles up to the Dreamcast (which was VGA capable) could output RGB with the right cable. To get the best analog t...

Whatever form factor and interface standard the Samsung 950 Pro is is the only one you need to pay attention to. Simplify this for yourself.

Look for motherboards that support PCIe M.2 SSDs.

Re: is an x4 slot fast enough for a PhysX-only card?

Honestly, it will likely bottleneck the system. The 1070 is strong enough to handle the PhysX and Graphics workloads alone. Having another card take up extra PCIe lanes isn't the best thing to do unless you're certain you have available lanes to the CPU. A slot that only supports 4x speed is questio...

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480= 980 GTX in 3D Mark 11

I have a 4GB GTX 980. The 480 is 8GB for $200. If this GPU doesn't help AMD's bottom line then it is a failure of their marketing department and an oversight of reasonable consumers. If I built a computer today for a friend or family, it would have an RX480 planned for it.

They're both in great condition, have 15MB or RAM and even 387 math co-processors. I can't justify spending $50 to $100 on a hard drive be...
