Re: Bonkers idea to drained the Mediterranean.

Of course entire Mediterranean Sea would be completely drained No, it wouldn't. That wasn't the idea. The Mediterranean is a concentration basin, it's saltier because of the evaporation, which is on the order of ~1 meter a year. The idea was to eventually lower it by 100m or 200m , and it would tak...

Terry Davis was 100% mentally ill.

Once he stopped talking his meds and took to the roads, the outlook wasn't good. And sadly, he died within months of that happening.

Yeah, he's jumped here and there for years, did he ever previously say it was for "personal reasons" as cover? I mean, retirement is one potential reason, but people usually just say that outright and it's also usually around a "round" date. So, unfortunately, the speculation bec...

Re: Coronavirus COVID-19 precautionary measures?

CDC didn't seem to think so in March. I certainly remembering making the point that masks aren't remotely failsafe, if only because we're just so incapable of fastidiously using them correctly at all times. We just don't have, and basically sort of can't have, any really rigorous data on how effect...

Re: Coronavirus COVID-19 precautionary measures?

The idea that big respiratory droplets are a huge vector is pretty sound, and yes, the idea that even simple masks would help obviate those is also strong. It's just that it's hard to "test" this sort of stuff for numerous reasons, starting with ethics. So, we don't really know, exactly. W...

I would provide that data if I had it available but it was years ago. You really shouldn't make fun of things like that. God has a funny way of showing how wrong you can be. Re: Chinese astrology - Let's try this one more time...

It's more about letting your fate rest in God's hands than trying to predict it. I have stayed away from the prediction part of astrology. I don't read horoscopes (they seem nonsense anyway). You just said that since whm1974 was born in a particular month, that means he's under the influence of a p...

Re: Coronavirus COVID-19 precautionary measures?

You must not be reading the reports of the damage this virus is capable of doing. Damage to lungs and heart muscles even in asymptomatic victims. Trying to achieve herd immunity might also cause lifelong damage to a significant portion of the population, shaving years off their life expectancy. So,...

Indeed, the logical reasoning of whm1974 is an enigma. But that is to be expected because Taureans are stubborn by nature. Even if a teensy weensy thought appears in his mind that seems to tell him something good about faith, the rest of his brain overwhelmingly crushes it. Only a life changing eve...

Faith is nothing more then Magical Thinking. So why does it deserves respect? Maybe it doesn't, that's irrelevant to what I was getting at. First quote is someone who supposedly respects religion, second quote definitely doesn't. I was pointing out the incongruity. Faith goes way beyond merely beli...

In fact, there's one developer in particular that I remember (goes back quite a few years though...) who defined a whole bunch of macros to make his C code look more like COBOL. Re: Coronavirus COVID-19 precautionary measures?

If you have a population of 1000 infected, there will be roughly 10 deaths. (see Diamond Princess). After one reproductive cycle, there will be between 2200 to 5700 infected (R0 of 2.2 to 5.7). In the next cycle, there are 22 to 57 deaths. One cycle after that, there will be 4840 to 32490 infected,...

Exponential growth. Each infection causes 2.2 to 5.7 more infections. This means that every death causes 2.2 to 5.7 more deaths outside of a lockdown situation. The exact number isn't very important, but the tactics to combat it are the same. I think you need to go talk to your CDC friend some more.
