Re: Imgur's deterioration accelerates. Alternatives?

Don't know where Alexa's data comes from (Amazon browser extensions?), but I think somehow it's still a good proxy for traffic/users, and that's what everyone are after? I don't mean the quality of the data, I mean, what is the value of having the 7th most traveled website or whatever? Like, I'm st...

Re: Car runs rough on idle

The IAC will compensate for idle loads like the air conditioning (compressor) kicking on. If the IAC was bad, you would likely get a stall in this case. If you don't stall when the A/C comes on, IAC is prolly OK. True, and I would also emphasize the vacuum leak as you did. I was more trying to poin...

Re: Car runs rough on idle

That's the early era of O2 sensors for ECUs, and with electronic fuel injection replacing carburettors and chokes, the idle smoothness is down to either poor injection/ignition (check fuel lines, injectors, sparks and leads) or poor air/fuel mixture (check O2 sensors and ECU error codes). Uhh, not ...

But that's precisely the question: just what *IS* that worth?

I'm not sure, but 4 billion seems really high.

Well I'm pretty sure they spun off the Alibaba stake as part of that whole thing, so honestly I have no idea what on earth Yahoo really has that is worth much of anything.

Re: Car runs rough on idle

I would start the car and listen to the engine and see if you can hear a hissing noise...that is always the easy way to track down a leak. Once you have the area it is coming from narrowed down, you can start checking the lines and see which one it is. You can do the smoke (see where it gets sucked...

Passenger vehicles generally remain drivable without power steering, especially if already moving, provided the driver can keep their wits. Heavy equipment is a whole different category of scary. Can confirm. I've done it. It's certainly not easy if stationary, but manageable when moving. As you ex...

As far as MoviePass goes, from what I've read, their business model is profit oriented for the long term They are losing money and going bankrupt. Their filings literally says their business model is "highly uncertain" for the rest of this year. https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/104...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

I was more-or-less with you right up until here. The Newton was a disaster. Apple dumped $100M into the project, which in the early 1990s was an enormous investment for the company. The Palm Pilot made it obsolete and Steve Jobs mercifully put it out of its misery. Yes, the Newton was a failure. No...

I just realized, this isn't even a forgery. Why? Because nothing in it purports or even implies that it has anything to do with the government or military. Anywhere. (OK, there are couple of references to "our" sensors, but that's pretty much literally it). This could be a fifth grader's b...

I was replying that nonsense. Apple is an Arm architectural licensee. It's nonsense to state what your cite literally says? I repeat, again: In the late 1980s Apple Computer and VLSI Technology started working with Acorn on newer versions of the ARM core. In 1990, Acorn spun off the design team int...

VLC has been cross-platform since time immemorial, and it's explicit purpose is to run anywhere and play anything.

That's not really most devs.

I don't have experience in military stuff or whatever, but that doesn't strike me as convincingly authentic. It's clearly written, down to literal wikipedia and regular layman websites footnotes, for a particular audience. Namely, us. That's not a big deal in-and-of-itself, plenty of "declassif...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

If arm can still do that reasonably well then many people will happily buy it. Yes. And my contention is that their current or immediately-upcoming ARM mobile processors can indeed do all that reasonably well, especially if they tweak the design mildly for ~10-15w TDP and make sure it has ironclad ...

There are several reasons why Atom lost in the ultra low power market and this is indeed one of them. The comparison here is that there are ARM instructions that fly through there decoders: there doesn't need to be a difference between the micro-op and the incoming instruction. For ARM, decoders ar...
