Wierd, I thought FiOS was exactly like uVerse......so FiOS isnt 100% IPTV? I'm on FIOS with a cablecard. EDIT: Which I assume means they are still QAM? At least for the regular broadcast and not PPV/VOD/whatchamacallit or something? EDIT2: I mean, I don't have a box or anything. The single cablecar...

Re: YALBT (Yet Another LED Bulb Thread)

I had just written what I'd do in such a case, and it sounds like it's not any better than just throwing it out. It's probably worse. Would be a much smaller issue if I hadn't bought a number of the crappy 1st-gen Cree bulbs. They account for nearly all of the failures. Yeah, luckily they last so l...

Yeah but that's on them. I did the right thing by recycling it. /inserts head into sand I appreciate the candor, but generally speaking that attitude is a huge problem: people contaminating otherwise marginal material streams means that not only was your contaminant land-filled, but so was the rest...

To be listed in the Microsoft Store, apps must pay 30% of the sale price to the store, exactly the same cut and business model of the Google Play store. Post-purchase in-app microtransactions are free. The only difference is Google charges $25 to register while Microsoft charges $19 for individuals...

The one good thing about most of the Windows stuff is that you can disable it. As always, there's a fine line between data harvesting to generate useful/helpful guidance for a more convenient user experience, and using it to bombard people with adverts. I'm not even saying that Microsoft should hav...

Well, I can help with this: - I tried extracting the Bios from the "5430A18.exe" file using the /writehdrfile and /writeromfile flags, but got errors and it didn't work. Those flags will only ever work if that EXE (which is a basically a flasher with embedded firmware data) was intended to...

Re: Win10 still capable of activating on Win7 keys, apparently...

Windows 10 is a free operating system. Microsoft are just pretending that the offer ended, but their business model entirely depends on getting Win 10 onto as many machines as possible, and selling all the personal data they collect through Cortana, etc. I mean, even better for them if a bunch of p...

They are making tons of money, but the movies probably aren't doing as well as Disney expected. I'm *not* saying it was a bad investment, or that the franchise is dying, etc.... but it really should be doing better. I mean, saying they are comparable to "Black Panther", which is a "bi...

I have a strange love/hate view on Alaskans, in part due to having several family/friend relationships with them. I've always envisioned Alaska as this strange, near-mythical, land that attracts malcontents and itinerants and is home to solitary off-the-grid folks that occasionally lose their mind ...

Yeah we have oil.. ...which Alaska taxes. Heavily. It's not that Alaska really has "less" taxes, it is that it has a industry-specific tax you just happen to not pay personally. Also: Mineral extraction isn't transportable. Essentially all other industry is. Other states don't have the lu...

Re: Apple Dumps Intel: CONFIRMED!

Apple did pull off the switch rather well but Apple continued to sell a model of the G5 for six months after the Mac Pros were introduced. Those that needed new systems but didn't have their software ported over could get hardware to run their legacy applications on during the transition phase. Rig...

Re: Apple Dumps Intel: CONFIRMED!

Typically maximum number of devices on a bus scales by powers of 2 and Apple already has six cores which would put the initial number at a mere 8. Presumably they have some coprocessors and/or the GPU on the same coherent but which would easy break that 8 limit. Next value up would simply be 16. I ...

Which is really ironic considering that during the late 80's/early 90's everyone including Intel thought that x86 was on it's last legs and will be replaced by RISC and VLIW CPUS.

In the late 80s/early 90s, Apple was still using the 68k ISA, which was CISC.

Re: Apple Dumps Intel: CONFIRMED!

My gut is telling me that Apple is going to transition much faster this time around. Reality is telling me that the Intel transition of the mid-2000s was to a pre-existing , market-dominating , well-known commodity processor that offered significantly more performance right off the bat. Reality is ...

Re: Apple Dumps Intel: CONFIRMED!

Yeah they couldn't get the G5 to offer enough performance at low enough power, and there didn't seem to be any end in sight.

I mean, for heaven's sake, the later/fastest G5 towers (which still couldn't even reach the promised 3Ghz) were sold as OEM water-cooled.

I only mentioned it because they were getting flak about it for months before it got dealt with IIRC. (So yes, they dealt with it, but not mentioning how long it took is some revisionist history BS.) That entire discussion (including whether or not they should) is for another topic IMO. Hahah, it's...

Good grief. There is a high probability that Apple has new 64-bit ARM-based designs for laptop, desktop, and workstation class hardware undergoing development/testing in their labs as I type this. They have another year or so to improve upon those designs. At this point it would be criminal if they...

Re: Apple Dumps Intel: CONFIRMED!

My main point is that Apple's existing big core in the A11 wouldn't have to undergo radical changes to be competitive (ie 'overclock and juice that A11 into higher performance with concomitant power usage' as you put it) to be competitive. Recent Sky Lake-SP Xeons don't have that high of clock maki...

I'm saying that your narrative for this is entirely derived from your own personal feelings, and so saying "you don't care" is bizarre. First off, it's factually wrong: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/3kkdjb/following-other-tech-companies-cloudflare-has-dropped-the-daily-stormer...

Perhaps the answer is where you openly admit to skipping over. Nuance is just lost on some people. I doubt it. I recall you being one of those "ARM is magic" types. Perhaps I'm wrong though, surely you can succinctly summarize this "answer" whose "nuance" I've missed.
