3570 - https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Core-i5-3570-3-4Ghz-SR0T7-CPU-3rd-Gen-Tested-Working/272965585656?hash=item3f8e044af8:g:l4UAAOSwAaJaIug5 Thanks DancingJack, but that's actually around $82CAD + $15CAD (shipping) + $8CAD (customs). Pretty much the same as the one I just ordered for $102CAD. Next...

Re: Help me choose an upgrade for my son's PC

Thanks everyone for your input. I just realised that the 3470 is actually an "S" flavor. I think it's a bit less powerful than the non-S. I think I'll target the 3570 which I can get used for just a bit under $90CAD on ebay. I don't remember what he has as CPU cooler. I'll have to open his...

Re: Help me choose an upgrade for my son's PC

Thanks for your input Arbiter Odie. I kind of suspected that. So first thing: CPU! Also looking at the comparison R9 380 vs GTX 1060, it seems like that would be a great improvement as well, almost doubling the framerate. But if the i3 is already a bottleneck, then it will be even worst for the GTX1...

Help me choose an upgrade for my son's PC

Hi there, My son wants to upgrade his computer with his x-mas money. It's a decent system already, but he would like to improve on the gaming performance. His current CPU is an Intel Core i3-3220, 8Gb of DDR3 RAM, and his GPU is a Radeon R9 380. My challenge is that I'm not sure what should be the p...

Today, I say goodbye... (but not how you think)

Hello Techies, No, I am not leaving the forum. I am not moving. I did not lose someone close to me, and I am not leaving this life... No, today I say goodbye to an old friend. a couple of days ago, my 6-7 year old Asus motherboard died. I'd say that's a pretty good run, based on how frequently I use...

Re: Re-purposing a hard drive

It's actually completely disassembled right now, except from the bottom spinner thing. Oh and I don't see any other stickers or screws left that would be related to it. I started hitting it with a hammer and punch from the bottom. I think it moved a bit, because the thing doesn't spin anymore. But I...

Re: Re-purposing a hard drive

Don't worry about the data, one of the purpose WAS to destroy the data. The drive also wasn't working properly anymore to start with.

I will try what you suggest. Many thanks.

Re: Re-purposing a hard drive

Yes they are quite strong! Strong enough that I though at first that part was screwed on. But I saw no screw and after using a screwdriver to try to force it up, that's where I saw it would obey, then come back to place very quickly. :o

But I still have no solution for the hub/axle...

Yes that is what I meant. I apologize, as you can see I don't know the terms (plus I'm French  ).

The defunct drive was a WD Caviar SE.

Re-purposing a hard drive

Hi, This may belong to the back porch, but no matter really... I just dismantled a HDD to re-purpose it (don't know in what yet). Does anyone know how to remove the bottom center spinning part? It seems to me it's integral to the bottom tray, but maybe there's still a way to remove it. I've tried to...

I want to buy a new laptop, but I want Windows 7

Hi everyone, OK so this is my current problem. I won't go in the details as to why I don't want Win8. That's for another thread hehe. I know some online retailers have Windows 7 options, but I don't want to buy this online, so my current options only have Windows 8 laptops. My real question is the f...

Re: VGA upgrade - potential bottlenecks?

Nice to know.

I went ahead and bought the Video Card. Mega bonus, I got four game keys (Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Far Cry Blood Dragon, and Crysis 3!!).

Runs much quieter and cooler than my previous 4870 to boot. I'll try some games tomorrow.

Cheers all, and thanks for your input!

Re: VGA upgrade - potential bottlenecks?

Hey, thanks for your reply.

I do have 4 slots for ram. However, they are currently filled with four 1Gb sticks... I guess those could be sold as well, as anyone not doing gaming might be looking for DDR2 upgrades to their older system...

VGA upgrade - potential bottlenecks?

Hi all, I'm planning to finally upgrade my trustworthy Radeon 4870 to a Radeon 7870. My question is: will my CPU become a bottleneck, in a way that I wouldn't get the most out of this card? My CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 965. The other problem I may have is I only have 4Gb of RAM. The thing is that m...

Re: Have to sell my (small) CD collection

After thinking back on this (BTW, my list is now complete, here is the link again ), I think I'll just start and list the CD's on e-bay directly. A couple of reasons: - I've been trying to figure out a way to determine the value of each of these. I've been using e-Bay, Amazon, and a couple of other ...

Re: Vinyl LPs... who still listens to (or buys) them?

I love this discussion thread... :) I love vinyl. I used to be a vinyl buff: loved the sound, loved the larger artwork/pictures, love the entire experience overall, from the store purchase to the last note of side-B. But do I own any today? Not a single one. I recently sold my collection to a young ...

An excruciatingly boring webinar covering our change from paper-based time sheets to Oracle PeopleSoft's on-line system. Since about half of my fellow State employees don't even use computers in their daily jobs, this is at a very basic level. Oh lordy lord... Listening to Cover 2 Cover, a "co...

If they're already out of jewel boxes, just scare up a couple of empty 100-count spindles. Storage problem solved. Sounds like the collection is all in original cases and some have reasons to keep the case (signed). Original issue stated he had some oddball sized ones too. Yes, like Arvald said. Th...

Re: Have to sell my (small) CD collection

Amazon Marketplace. If you see a title that has 300 copies listed at $0.01 each, then don't even bother. On the other hand you might have a rare title or two that is in demand, and get an unexpected $15-20. Or, post the whole deal on eBay as two or three big genre collections, and see if you can ge...

Have to sell my (small) CD collection

Hey! Just wondering if anyone would have advice/ideas on how would be the best way to sell my CD "collection". It's not a very big collection, about 300 CD's (I know some people have in the thousands!). Reality of life is making us move into a smaller place, and among the things we decided...

My son's first custom PC... comments?

Hi all, My son is so proud to have gathered enough money to buy his own PC (x-mas money helped! ). He is autistic, so that's a decently big deal for him. We already bought a nice 23" monitor, and now we are going to order the parts and build his PC. Gonna do this together, so I'll show h...
