Re: Winter weather

I truly hope this is my last winter in Wisconsin (I told myself last winter would be my last one and yet here I am). This cold spurt is definitely not as bad as it could be (daytime temps get up to near 0F/-18C, nighttime around -14F/-26C), and the snow is still tame relative to the NE U.S., but I'm...

Re: Stupid and terrible software.

This is a pretty niche example, but back in 2013 I was working with a terrestrial lidar scanner which generates point-cloud data that was usually ~10gb per scan. The vendor specific software meant for processing and viewing the data however, was a 32 bit application. They had coded some workarounds ...

Re: Kaby Lake Raja Edition [Kaby Lake-G] photographed

I'm still uncertain as to how much of a benefit this is, as opposed to a discrete CPU/GPU. The biggest I see is that you are freeing up space on the motherboard; but does reducing that space (and assuming whatever wiring/connections go away as a result) translate to significant power savings? I can'...

Re: Need ideas for my next game...

How has no one mentioned HoMM III? I got HoMM III HD edition (with updated graphics) in the bundle with Might & Magic Heroes VII on Steam. I don't see the bundle today. I was a little disappointed with the HD Edition. The "Complete" edition that you can get on GoG comes with the addit...

Re: Need ideas for my next game...

How has no one mentioned HoMM III on GOG? https://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition I still find myself coming back to that game all the time, it is a classic that I've sunk more than enough hours into. HoMM V is the only other one I'd recommend, it's a really nice improv...

Yeah it's crappy, and given that it's WI I'm more than inclined to believe it was an alcohol related incident. At the end of the day it's now in the hands of the police/insurance. The less I know about the entire situation the better for my mental sanity.

Walking my way to the bus stop this morning when I see a bright orange and white piece of paper tucked underneath my car windshield, enclosed in a plastic bag. My bank has enough ATMs around the area that it isn't a big issue unless I'm away from home. But the proliferation of ATM fees in general is just one more nail in the coffin for cash. I'm of an age where it feels strange to charge anything that costs less than $15 or so, and if I don't have at leas...

Do Dell Ultrashap monitors ever go on sale?

Not sure if this is the appropriate board for this question, but I wanted to ask. Since October or so I've been on the lookout to buy either a Dell 2515H or 2717D if there is a sale. I was hoping that there would be a holiday discount at some point but no such luck. I'm just curious if there is ever...

Re: Every few years, painful MS Office "upgrade"

One HUGE improvement that I use daily in Excel is the ability to have two Excel windows open (aka side by side on my dual monitors) and copy-paste between them.  Such a simple concept, yet they never had that functionality until Office 2013 (or maybe it was Office 2016, can't remember).  Before thi...

Re: Wanting new monitor, research ends in confusion

So after some further perusing, the Dell 2515H is probably what I am circling around http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2515h.htm It is more or less identical to the U2717D except in a 25" screen and not a 27". For me that's a pretty livable compromise, and it saves ~$100. I'm in no...

Keep in mind that 10bit is still in it's infancy stages. You need very special programs that support 10bit in order to get anything from it. Not sure how quickly 10bit color will get mainstream adoption (and thus more compatible software), since the panels are still quite pricey. Oh. Well in that c...

Add me to the list of folks finding this thread helpful. I've been using an old Viewsonic monitor at home with a paltry 1280x1024 resolution for the last 8 years. Well, no, it was telling you that you broke the quest they were related to. You actually can murder literally everyone in the game and still complete it because there's a workaround in place just for such an eventuality! This is what Bethesda used to do.. You can permanently break the game. One NPC...

True RPG's allow killing everyone in the game, take consequences that come. Think Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1 and 2...ah the Golden Age. Bethesda doesn't make those though :P They used to. TES3: Morrowind stands as their crowning achievement to this day. The funny thing is, as much as people roll thei...

When 1TB SSD's can be bought for ~$200.00 maybe then I'll upgrade. Until then I'm standing pat. Plus I have the puniest monitor with a 1280x1024 resolution so even my 5850 is a sufficient GPU. At least that is how I justify it.

I'm rocking a 5850 on the PC I built ~4 years ago or so. It still works like a champ for me.

Then again my monitor is 1280x1024. Maybe one day I'll get some more screen real estate.
