Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

One of the few things I truly hate in this world are people who set their car alarms when they'll be nowhere near the car if it goes off. I'm sure I'm one of like 50+ people who weren't able to really sleep because of some jackhole doing so. The freaking thing is still going off as I type  :ev...

Re: Midwest blizzard

Haha I checked the radar and forecast for today. Another 3-5 inches expected with this next band of precip. For me I'm at the inflection point where I'm no longer emotionally defeated by winter weather, but really just want to see how far into Spring we can go. At this point I just want to watch th...

Re: Midwest blizzard

Apparently mother nature wants to remind the entire country that we are called "The Great White North" for good reason. Another round of snow tomorrow! Uhhg. Then, a week later, it's sunny and 70. I swear, living up here is like being married to a pregnant woman: constant emotional whipla...

I'm playing a trivia contest this weekend that is based in Steven's Point, WI and it's getting pretty rocked. This is Appleton, WI. Most businesses are closed. Supposed to continue into tomorrow. I've been watching the radar obsessively the last few days - Madison was really fortunate to be just so...

Re: Midwest blizzard

Yeah the weather sequencing here in Wisconsin gave me a chuckle. Mixed rain and sunshine, near 60 Wednesday and Thursday. Friday more rain, temperature starts plummeting and wind picks up like crazy. Yesterday during the day it was mostly wind and ice. Now we've got about 2 inches of snow and still ...

You should make the egg with a Rollie next time. To go with your whole food-masochism thing.

Re: spending only $100 a month on food.

Lots of people "concur it's probably not healthy," but lack any actual research to back it up. It IS fun, and there are no health issues unless you've got a health reason not to. To be fair, there's just as much research that shows fasting isn't healthy as there is research that shows it ...

Hey that sounds pretty good! I'll give it a shot. It's great. I have to stress the importance of letting the letting the meat sit out for 1-2 hours; the goal is to bring the entire breast up to ambient temperature. The biggest way to mess this method up and end up with a non-cooked interior is to s...

Re: spending only $100 a month on food.

I got sent to a dietician who put me on a pretty planned-out diet early this year because I'm a lardbutt and a recent type-2 diabetic. I strong-armed my wife into it so we're on this plan together. In just under two months I've lost 25 pounds just by sticking to a sub-1800 calorie diet. And we do a...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I know I'm definitely in the double digits for seeing them, but beyond that I have no idea. I really missed out on the jam scene when it was peaking (IMO) from the early-mid 00's (is there a name to describe the 2000-2010 decade yet?) as I hadn't even hit college yet - something that's always made ...

It hasn't been that harsh where I am in the Midwest but we did get some snow for the first full day of spring and it is still well below normal temperature wise. We've had a really tame winter in southern WI, much like Aranarth's experience in Michigan. I was able to bike-commute up until the first...

You're not telling me anything I don't know! :) I have seen Perpetual Groove probably 5 times? Only two of those were them being the lead, but I wasn't upset they were at the other shows. The jam bands tend to stick together and play a ton of shows together. I also went to Wakarusa five or six time...

I'm not really into the fantasy aspect of baseball, but I also don't want to start a new thread. In either case, expect some serious dingers from your players (finally hard evidence that the HR spike is a result of a new ball)

Well I need to take two classes at a time, starting with the summer semester. I'm not sure if this has been said already, but given that it's been such a long time since you were last in school, it probably works out that you are somewhat restricted to your course load. Getting back into the mindse...

Re: What cricket products are you eating?

I tried fried crickets a few years back and wasn't impressed. I don't have any psychological hiccups with eating bugs, but flavor/texture matters to me. The fried crickets I had tasted just like... oil. They had no flavor aside from the oil they were fried in. That was disappointing to me. I'd proba...

I've avoided HiFiMan headphones like the plague because they have a notoriously shoddy build quality. They may sound great, but when they fall apart <1 year in it's not worth anything. Last time I checked they also had garbage customer service, although maybe that has changed.

I truly hope this is my last winter in Wisconsin (I told myself last winter would be my last one and yet here I am). This cold spurt is definitely not as bad as it could be (daytime temps get up to near 0F/-18C, nighttime around -14F/-26C), and the snow is still tame relative to the NE U.S., but I'm...

This is a pretty niche example, but back in 2013 I was working with a terrestrial lidar scanner which generates point-cloud data that was usually ~10gb per scan. The vendor specific software meant for processing and viewing the data however, was a 32 bit application. They had coded some workarounds ...

I'm still uncertain as to how much of a benefit this is, as opposed to a discrete CPU/GPU. The biggest I see is that you are freeing up space on the motherboard; but does reducing that space (and assuming whatever wiring/connections go away as a result) translate to significant power savings? I can'...
