Re: New monitor/video card decisions

I broke down and ordered the Nixeus Edg last night, that discount is too good to pass up and even though it seems there is at least a certain amount of panel luck with that AOC panel it is far and away the best deal on a quality monitor right now.

Re: New monitor/video card decisions

I’ve narrowed it down to a pair of choices, one mid-range and one higher end both powered by AND cards. A 580 8GB card with an MSI Optix 1080P 24” monitor or a Vega 56 with the currently discounted Nixeus 1440P 27”. I might get the better card and lesser monitor to ensure more consistent frame-rate ...

Re: New monitor/video card decisions

Is there any legitimate reason decent 4K monitors are CHEAPER than equivalent 1440p monitors? There also seem to be very few mid spec 1440p monitors that support adaptive sync, is it just that all the cheaper 1440p monitors are older and so don’t have the adaptive sync support but most of the 4K mon...

Re: New monitor/video card decisions

I have no specific need to upgrade the HTPC, just laid out my original plan which was upgrade that and use the 280x as a de facto upgrade to the other PC. The kids spend significantly more time gaming than I do, so that was the impetus for the original plan. However I think that 1080P looks pretty g...

Re: New monitor/video card decisions

Oh, I have gamed on the HTPC hooked up to a TV since it was a CRT. The input lag on the current TV isn’t bad at all, I would never use it for any serious work though. I rarely do serious work on the gaming PC for that matter, mostly work stays at work or on a laptop I carry back and forth.

Re: New monitor/video card decisions

The HTPC TV is a 65” OLED by LG but we sit roughly 17 feet from the screen so the resolution curve seriously favors just leaving the 280x card and rendering at 1080p and upscaling. I mainly purchased it because I got an outrageously good deal on it and for movies the OLED is incredible. Like you sai...

New monitor/video card decisions

I’ve been a PC gamer since EGA vs CGA was a legitimate question, but over the last 5-6 years my career had taken the vast majority of my free time. My kids are getting to be old enough that gaming not involving birds and catapults is a legitimate time sink. My HTPC has a Radeon 280x and connects to ...

Re: So who here is actually mining?

I'm not mining currently, but I made a couple thousand dollars mining Litecoin and converting it to Bitcoin 4 or so years ago. Still makes me sick though that a friend of mine told me about Bitcoin in 2010 and it sounded stupid so I didn't start mining then...sure would be a nice view from my island...

Re: 4K TV problems with Windows 10

I'm not too worried about input lag, most of the games played on it are of the Lego variety haha. It actually looks really good in games where the upscaling isn't as noticeable, the desktop is the issue. I don't do work on it though, just frustrating to know that the image is worse than a monitor 1/...

Re: 4K TV problems with Windows 10

It identifies the TV correctly, I'll check the EDID info today. I went ahead and ordered a DP 1.2 to HDMI 2 active adapter to see what options that opens up as I feel it will be useful in the future anyway.

Re: 4K TV problems with Windows 10

Yea, it definitely isn't HDMI 2.0 capable and I know I won't get actual 4K output, but even 1440p would be nice. I get no options above 1080p. I have an ASUS R9 200 Radeon R9 280X, it said 4K on the box 3 years ago when I bought it (haha) so it supports 1.4a. The tv shows up as generic display devic...

4K TV problems with Windows 10

Ok, so my problem might not actually be with Windows 10 but it gets the blame for everything so I blame it too. I have an R9 280 graphics card and am trying to not upgrade just yet. I recently upgraded from a 1080p 42" TV to a 4K LG 65" TV and everything works ok, but I can't select a reso...

Re: How much faster have CPUs really gotten in 4 years?

The first question is what speed are your running the i750? if you are extremely lucky and can run it well into the 4.4+ GHz range without a ton of extra voltage, then a new CPU and motherboard is kind of a waste in my mind if you don't need the other features a new platform brings.

Re: Any good UPS brands other than APC?

My biggest question is when did observation become "junk science"? Virtually all science is based on observation at one level or another. How exactly do you confirm an experiment without observing it? I understand that conjecture and fact are not the same thing and that a single observatio...

The specs say it has 2 HDMI inputs. Folks on the AVS forums are saying those specs are incorrect and the TV does in fact come with 3 HDMI inputs. I wonder what the truth is? *edit: as it turns out, the next model up that Sam's Club sells for the exact same price has 3 HDMI ports and supports 1080p/...

Don't forget 120mm fans for the TR U120, it doesn't come with them. One works, two work better...whether it is worth it depends on where you sit on the speed versus silence spectrum.

I would say that maybe you guys should verify the main spec systems and then on the alternative page make the disclaimer that you haven't tested the parts in a system together. Then you could not only offer ATI/Nvidia, AMD/Intel type options but just newer less proven options as well. Best of both w...

Yes, that is pretty much correct. SLI does not double the graphics power, it helps a lot, but is not perfect. 1 card = 1 card 2 cards in SLI= 1.3-1.7 cards It is usually better to go to the next highest card instead of using SLI on two lower end cards. Most people that SLI either do it because they ...

That is the frame rate in each of those anti-aliasing modes, none up to 16xQ. Unless you are using a really small monitor, you would never probably use the highest end AA on one of these cards except on very old games so don't let those right most numbers worry you too much.

The question to ask isn't do you need a bigger PS to run SLI, it is are you ever going to run SLI? If you go the 2900XT route you will run Crossfire and that isn't going to happen on that board anyway. If you go the 8800 GTS route, SLI is an option but will you ever do it?
