Re: Multi-city travel sites

I would start by using the Multi-city tab on http://www.hipmunk.com/ and doing some light research from there. Note that you can put comma's between airport codes (CLT,RDU,GSO) up to five in the airport box, and you can put +1 or +2 on the dates. I've found that doing this will sometimes limit resul...

Re: Quick and dirty multithreading?

#pragma omp parallel for and compile your C/C++ program with -fopenmp on a modern compiler. Place that #pragma directly above any for() loop and the compiler will automatically optimize the loop to use all possible cores. This is a starting point. Look up OpenMP for more. Its incredibly simple and ...

Re: HDMI length

If I'm understanding http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?p_id=4065 right, it will input HDMI, split to Cat5E/Cat6, then its your job to run those cables any distance you want to the other box, which will output to HDMI again.

Do HDMI repeaters exist? Thats what someone would use for a typical wire signal degradation problem.

Upgrading my laptop

Hey everyone, I don't know much about the specifics of RAM, but I wondering if someone could tell me if I could benefit from a RAM upgrade. I currently have 4 gb RAM (well not really, this is a 32bit laptop) and my processor is an AMD Athlon X2 QL-62. I got and edited the following from Speccy. I'm ...

Horizontal vs vertically placed mobos

Nearly all cases these days are designed to have motherboards placed upright and vertical, but is this for heat and airflow or is it more of a space concern for sitting on desks? I remember when the Xbox 360 came out, many people said to put it vertical because its better for heat but perhaps thats ...

Re: Buiding into a Compaq Presario (circa 1994)

Lol, I've probably touched every imaginable part of these boards and the CRT, including the copper wiring, with my bare hands. The thing hasn't been plugged in since....2001? I wasn't that worried. What I was worried about, was the X-Ray radiation warning sticker that I found in two places. But anyw...

Re: Buiding into a Compaq Presario (circa 1994)

Little update: After managing to strip an Allen screw beyond belief, I had to get a drill which proved useful in completely obliterating any trace of the bugger. I was able to pull the case right off and reveal two circuit boards, ten thousand capacitors, way to many resistors, and a couple more thi...

Re: Buiding into a Compaq Presario (circa 1994)

I've actually considered buying a small tower or reusing the side of one and simply putting that inside of this case so I can have the necessary places to screw into and it wouldn't be as much work although it wouldn't be quite as pretty, but I'd rather have that then screw holes on the outside of t...

Buiding into a Compaq Presario (circa 1994)

I've had a dream for a few years of tearing out the innards of my childhood Compaq Presario CDS 520 and installing a completely new interior and a new screen in place of the CRT monitor. Then I realized the screen is probably 10 inches horizontally and it's square so it would probably be a good idea...

A christmas gift

I recently had an obscure great great aunt die whom and I had never met and she left me $2,000. Ideas on how I should spend it? I need a new computer and I would really prefer a notebook over a desktop because I'm a student, but at the same time, I'd just as much like to put it all into student loan...

Mushkin or Corsair?

I'm attempting to order a notebook on buyxg.com and they are offering to change the DDR2 RAM from "Corsair or Major Brand" to Muskin for $9 extra. I'm not very familiar with the difference among RAM manufacturers so I don't know if this is a good decision. Nine dollars isn't much at all an...

Why was Super Talent's 2.5" IDE Flash HD so bad?

TR recently (it was a month ago) reviewed Super Talent's 2.5" IDE Flash hard drive http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q3/supertalent-flashide/index.x?pg=1 . I've always been excited by the thought of a flash hard drive as this way it gets rid of having to wait (a couple milliseconds) for the pin...

Welcome to TR 8) From what I've seen you'd be hard-pressed to get a barebones laptop, especially for that price bracket. If you have a windows retail license already, or get one from your university, then it's not a problem to wipe it, otherwise you might be stuck. That said, don't immediately disq...

Need help with a barebones laptop

I'm a senior this year in high school and I would really like a laptop for school. My parental units gave me a green light, but they've restricted me to no more than $800. I recently started going to TR and saw the July system guide, and I loved it. Hand picked decent computer with a fair price. Nic...
