Re: Comcast Injecting Popups About Modem

They are doing javascript injection on the pages headed to your ip address. As far as I know, there really isn't a way around it. TLS-encrypted pages are immune to injection, but I don't think there's a way to stop it on normal unencrypted pages.

Re: What's your highest "power on hours" HDD?

Oldest one I have in service at work is at 43205 -- a HGST Deskstar HDN724040ALE640. Ironically this morning one of them started barfing up correctable read errors. Luckily it's running a zfs volume so it can fight the checksumming for a week (RAIDZ2 so it's got some spare copies to work with) until...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

I ran into this issue when I ran out of ports on my MBP. I had 2 monitors via TB3 (usb-c) to displayport cables, the charger, and a TB3 (usb-c) to ethernet+3 usb 3.0 A adapter. I wanted to add a TB3 10Gbe dongle and I just couldn't find a simple TB3 hub that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I ended up ...

USB sticks. Performance, data retention, torture test. Do they die by going read only, die slowly getting slower, die by suddenly refusing to be recognised? USB3 sticks on USB2 ports (and vice-versa) do they max out the USB2 speed or is there some subtle issues? Are the free ones givin out at shows...

I have a slightly overclocked 4790k, and while I don't think I'd get much bang/$ out of upgrading the CPU, I am starting to notice the age of the rest of the platform, especially the lack of a full 4-lane PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot.

Disk management in Windows should be able to see the partitions and destroy them.

Failing that, issuing the 'clean' command in diskpart to that device should erase the partition table and allow you to do anything you want to it.

RIP Abit. They were teetering on the edge of profitability when the caps plague happened and I think less than a year later they declared bankruptcy. Pretty sure that's an MSI board pictured, though. I had so many of those boards go bad trying to drive scalding-hot Netburst chips in hot factory envi...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

There exists for some panels a bracket that slides over the main disconnect switches that physically blocks the first two breakers in one of the banks unless the main is in the off position. That might be a solution depending on if you can find one that fits your panel.

I'm so glad I gutted all the plumbing and electrical when I bought this old farm house. I got back from a trip on Sunday, and threw my clothes into the washer, then dryer. When I turned the dryer on it let out a little squeak when it started, then ran normally through the entire cycle. Fast forward ...

I think my home network is sitting around the 26TB mark between a 14TB freeNAS/plex server, an 8TB backup freeNAS server, and a 4-ish TB freeNAS scratch machine. Work's primary and secondary backup servers are 40TB and 28TB but that's primarily because I over-specced them for projects that of course...

Playing with the Winsxs folder (50,000 files). a) Don't do that. b) If you're trying to free up space, keep in mind that Explorer mis-reports directories with hard links in them, as Explorer is dumb and counts each file separately, even if they point back to the same data stream. About half the low-flow stuff has a little limiter you can remove "if you have low water pressure". The other half gets a date with a power drill.

I did the opposite of repair: I had a nasty old shed (old farm homestead) taking up valuable real estate in my back yard that I finally got sick of enough to do something about. Some DSL modems will still respond to an IP address when set up in bridge mode. You can try setting it up with an ip address outside your normal LAN subnet and seeing if you can connect to that.

Does the Windows version of Handbrake support the NVENC library? It might be worth investigating picking up a cheap modern GPU and using that for encodes.

Edit: according to the performance guide linked above, Handbrake supports all 3 major GPU encode libraries: QSV, NVENC, and VCE.

The aftermarket head end on my truck does this and it drives me insane. I'm constantly outside with a set of 3M worktunes , and whenever I start my truck the receiver immediately steals the stream and I have to hit play/pause on the headset. Then to make matters worse when I turn the truck off, just...

I don't know anything about their design or if other craft do that, but is it normal for them to rotate around and shuffle positions like that? I kept waiting for one to become entangled or fold up when bouncing off its neighbor.

Would be kind of cool if it supported AirPlay 2 with all its multi-unit synchronization features (so you could outfit an entire room with them), but then I'd bet it wouldn't cost 20 bux.
