Re: The Nintendo Switch is pretty great

Out of curiosity, have you done much with putting games on an SD card? I wondered what kind of stuttering or lag (if any) you've experienced by loading games off of SD instead of the internal eMMC. I guess if you're buying cartridges it's not a big deal, but to keep the chance of damaging a game lo...

Re: The Nintendo Switch is pretty great

Well major first party releases on a monthly basis is a lot more than they've done for any console in a long while and is more than "not much" How long can they keep it up though? We don't know what's coming past December (or at least I don't know), but they've hit basically every main fr...

Re: The Nintendo Switch is pretty great

I'm not planning on buying a Switch until they're widely available and the games are there. It's evident from both posts that there's not much on the horizon. It's unfortunate, but expected. Pokemon will be the big seller in my house. She's a Pokemon fanatic and has played through Pokemon Moon once...

Re: Is Facebook getting past my hosts file?

You've got that one screenshot of the firefox dev tools showing the network tab with the facebook.com entry selected, the fact that it shows as not secure is a sign to me that it's blocked as I'd think a connection to real facebook would end up with working https but if you after selecting that entr...

Re: Is Facebook getting past my hosts file?

With a hosts file your browser is still going to see webpages telling it to go access things from facebook.com and it will do so, it's just that facebook.com no longer actually points to actual facebook. So seeing a connected to facebook.com seems plausibly harmless to me. Similarly with 3rd party t...

Re: How come DisplayPort isn't more common on motherboards?

The frame buffer size would be ~80 MB, not 800 MB. Still, transfering this amount of data 60 times per second would take up about 15% of memory bandwidth if you have DDR4-2133. 3840 * 2160 * 32 * 3 / 1024^2 = 759MB. Also, I figured just drawing the screen would take 569MB/s of bandwidth, which shou...

Re: Android malware spreading through Google's AdSense network

So if you do not allow apps from Unknown Sources to be installed, which is the default setting, can the malware still be installed, or it just got downloaded then nothing happens? My reading of the article and screenshots is it can't be installed without allowing 3rd party apps, and even if one had...

Re: HWmonitor Or Core Temp which one is good for windows 8.1

I have spent two decades tweaking processors, and really the only thing I care about is the temperature of the hottest core. Core Temp will do a lot more than that, but honestly, what do you want out of it other than "how hot is my processor"? "Core Temp will do a lot more than that,...

Re: Is it possible to do this......

I don't think Virtual Audio Cable is the solution, from what I can tell it creates a virtual audio device but you still need to be able to select the device used in the application. Wouldn't the videocard's audio output via the dispaly cable show up as it's own device anyways? So if the software had...

Re: Is it possible to do this......

It should certainly possible be to outout via different devices at the same time and some applications such as VLC do allow you to select an audio output device. However I'm assuming whatever nonsense comcast uses for streaming doesn't expose that as an option leaving you at the mercy of window's au...

Re: M.2 slot or Sata Express

Neither of those drives are going to be pci express speeds. M.2 allows for both drives that operate over the pci express bus(like sata express) or normal sata III drives just with a stick form factor. Most m.2 drives including that adata one are the latter. Then the samsung you've linked is just a n...

The MX200's should be pretty solid as well though (plus they have the usual capacitor bank for power failures/finishing up writes). Do they? I don't see that mentioned in the TR review... Not really, lots of Crucial's consumer level drives including the MX200 do have a form of "power loss prot...

Re: unable to add GPU to Dell 3847

It's just that to boot UEFI the video card needs to support it and that card doesn't. However for secure boot to function the mobo needs to boot in UEFI mode resulting in a conflict, and it apparently gives preference to the secure boot setting rather than working . With secure boot off the motherbo...

Re: Will Quad-core CPUs be required for future games?

We live in an era of console ports designed to run, if we're lucky, at 30fps on Full HD format, this drives the market infinitely more than whether Intel has cut $30 off the i5 4440. It's my understanding that the PS4 and Xbone are both capable of 60 fps @ 1080p. If so, why does the 30 fps cap exis...

My other printer at home is a Dell Color Laser 3100cn (which was Xerox-made). Windows 8 support was dropped , so I'd probably go with another option ...

Re: Batman uses guns in the new Arkham Knight Trailer?

Batman has a long history of using guns in the comics (especially in the early ones), so I don't see what the big deal is. The comic writers did move away from Batman using firearms due to the censorship imposed by the Comics code, and the pragmatic view of not wanting to kill off all the interesti...

This is probably a dumb question...I picked up an ASUS Z97-AR this morning and i5 4690K. Is there anything that would keep SpeedStep from dropping to 800Mhz while idle and Turbo from jumping to 3.9Ghz with a single thread running? I've been looking through the UEFI and everything looks right, but C...

Re: M.2 Drive question

Switching to a PCIe SSD isn't likely to give you anything like the jump between a rotational drive and an SSD. That jump in how your system feels was caused primarily by the reduced access times and latency of an ssd where as going to a PCIe SSD will mostly just provide extra bandwidth and that's ne...
