Re: The iPhone got forked!

You guys don't mind paying for a forked device for features which essentially could have been an over the air update to most current models? Over the air update? Face ID - hardware feature Edge to edge OLED display - hardware feature Removal of home button - hardware feature Face ID is awesome. I c...

Re: The iPhone got forked!

Last time I checked facial recognition can be done on any computing device. I'm not sure why you're convinced it can only be done with specialized hardware. It's like you guys have been hypnotized. Then you need to check again, because the way the iPhone X does facial recognition is vastly differen...

There is also Outlook.com. It has a built-in Calendar and you can have it send you email notifications at your intended interval to any email address that you register.

Re: Bad news for Linux users.

I really tried to like GNOME 3, and Unity, but have concluded that they are both abominations which get in your way too much to be tolerable as a daily use DE. I've recently given GNOME 3 another shot after the 3.14 and it has really improved. I absolutely hated it when it was first released, but i...

Dead pixels.. they aren't permament?!

I haven't owned too many LCD screens, as I was member of the CRT-my-cold-dead-hands party until my ViewSonic PF815 and NEC FP2141SB died, but I recently got my first dead/stuck pixel. A single bright-green Orc of a pixel that stared right at me--located at the top-left portion of my screen. I tried ...

Re: Unresponsive HDD caused by high speed downloads?

Try switching to an entirely different network adapter. For example, if you're using WiFi, switch to Ethernet and see if it happens again. If it doesn't happen, it could be the driver or chipset of the network device you are using. I ran into a similar issue with a system using a D-Link Wireless-G P...

Re: OS Decay

Okay, so I'm going to rant... This entire concept of "winrot", in the sense that Time is a contributing factor to bad performance, is stupid. It is a term rooted purely in the lack of understanding of how a problem came to be. If it was used as a metaphorical term for user's installing bad...

Re: Why are there no high-power ARM CPUs?

I think it is also a good idea to point out again that this whole "x86 can't do low TDP" is senseless. Its founded on the idea that the instruction set somehow implies how a CPU is built. While that made sense back when CPUs were built as 1:1 implementations of their instructions sets, tha...

Re: Why are there no high-power ARM CPUs?

So from the way I see it, technically, nothing is stopping ARM from being a high performance, except that it'd be rubbish. To use the car analogy (first!), I guess one could look at it from the point of view of taking the engine from a SMART car and trying to scale it up to 1000hp. Not going to hap...

Re: Different CPU ISAs Discussion

Ah, true. With the prominence of assembly during those days, there wasn't going to be any "just re-compile and you're done" type of ports either. So even if there was an attempt to move to MIPS in '85, it would've failed.

Re: Different CPU ISAs Discussion

When you ask which CPU ISA can take x86's place, what it really boils down to is what CPU ISA do you feel should have been in the original IBM PC. The quality of the ISA itself really has less to do with the success of x86 than it has to do with being an off-the-shelf product, being chosen as the IB...

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

Given the number of installations/re-installations that had occurred, it's difficult to say where any of your data is. But I would recommend that before proceeding any further, boot into any Linux recovery CD, navigate the /home folder and then locate your user directory. Once there, open the .mozil...

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

EasyBCD is a Windows tool. It can be used to install a GRUB/GRUB2/LILO entry into the Windows boot loader to boot into Linux. You don't have to re-install GRUB. If you're restricting the scenario to strictly only the Windows DVD and not going to the web to download EasyBCD, well.. that's simply not ...

Re: The great DX vs GL debate

The future of OpenGL in the gaming segment will depend entirely on how much control Microsoft is able to exert over gaming in general going forward. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter which one is "better" from a purely technical perspective. Agreed. The only myth here is tha...

I am the tester for Classic Shell. Ivo and I started it in 2009 when MS removed the real Classic Start Menu but over time it has matured to add a search box and become a hybrid Start Menu. Crossed 1 million downloads this April and growing in popularity. :) That is awesome. You guys rock, thanks! (...

I actually like the Win7 start menu and I'm disappointed that Classic Shell doesn't seem to have a way to emulate it more closely. Indeed, I really liked the Windows 7 Start menu as well. Why bother? It's simple really, because someone might simply prefer running a Windows OS. Classic Shell + Windows 8

I originally posted this in the "Windows 8 RTM allegedly leaked already" news item comments, since that really sparked the availability of the final version of Windows 8. I know lots of folks want to skip the Start Screen, and it can be done. With that said, since Windows 8 is now here (un...

Besides that I've read a lot of positive things about Linux Mint myself, and their website really shines in comparison to the old Debian...

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

I'd suggest Mageia, being it's pretty user friendly, and has a gui interface for almost everything. I don't really want to mess with Ubuntu after hearing all the negative news, and that it updates slower than the rest. Mint or Fedora would be my second choices. Aside from a default packages contain...

Hey Rambo, Having reviewed your specs and requirements, I heavily suggest sticking to Windows XP as your primary OS. You can dual boot into Linux to play around with the distros, but both Wine and gaming in VMware will run terribly slow with that video card. If you have any intention of running Wind...
