Re: Wisdom teeth removal - share your experience and tips

Impacted is when they are sideways? I had that. Got all done. I remember trying to hug a dentist to say thank you. Other than that stay the hell away from noodle soup. Thought I missed a noodle and sucked it down. Immediately realized my mistake and that I sucked down a blood clot. This began a full...

Re: Peter Bright of Ars Technica charged by FBI

As an aside, I find it distasteful that ArsTechnica hasn't reported on this. They were more than happy to dredge up ancient posts about Edward Snowden from their forums when he frequented the site years before his crime, but one of their staff gets in trouble and it's radio silence. Preach it. I ne...

Re: Enterprise Server help

Yeah any relatively modern VM release should support live migration of the compute resource from one host to another. I have experience with VMware and Xen but I’m sure hyper V and kvm support that crap too. You can just manually move the nodes, update the host, move them back. Done. Like dragon sai...

Re: Enterprise Server help

We have been migrating from physical to VM, from a bunch of HP DL to Dells. I guess it depends on your budget and current setup, but wouldn’t sticking with VMs give you better flexibility with performance and storage scaling, plus scheduled backups or whatever high availability setup you have for yo...

This might? At least it supports advanced directory listings, whatever that means. A vendor makes us use it at work but I don’t actually use it myself.

Erlite 3 at home and erpro-8 at work. Work has a gigabit line and I don’t see issues. It only handles a separate WiFi network and not our hard lined network, but it just hums along.

Nuance PDF Converter is pretty solid. If you don't need to use forms, you can get a cheaper version. Looks like the cheaper version edits forms and here is what it is called now. https://www.nuance.com/print-capture-and-pdf-solutions/pdf-and-document-conversion/power-pdf-converter/power-pdf-standard...

Re: HP 551n Upgrade to HP 551dn

I looked into this for some recent HP laser model and the modifications needed went far beyond "just install a duplexing unit." I don't know if the old 4350 series or even the P4015/P4515 series was any easier, but looking at a service manual it seemed like there are duplex specific belts,...

Re: Personal Supercomputer, didn't know there was such a thing.

Well... Macs used to use PowerPC chips that were also (in a much different configuration) used in Mainframes (and many other IBM products for that matter). So if you squinted rather a lot, you could consider PowerMacs of that era to be really gimped workstation-level versions of a supercomputer. ED...

Re: Personal Supercomputer, didn't know there was such a thing.

That's not a supercomputer, that's just a very beefy workstation. People have been making those for decades (see: SGI). Please tell me this is a practical joke  No joke. Power hungry, super expensive workstations with amazing graphics performance (for their day)? Just look at the SGI Indigo s...

Re: POP!_OS by System76.

I would wait for System 7.6.1 instead. The 0.0.1 releases really fixed a bunch of stuff, so much that you'd only really want to use the "odd" versions as the "even" ones always had problems.

Before GPUs were a thing, people made Beowulf clusters as personal supercomputers. Here is a neat one in a single "case":

You can do the same with a bunch of Pi as has already been mentioned. Physics simulations, whatever.

Re: Starfalcon's Great Hardware Inventory

If you are going to split out hard drives by size, or at least note non-3.5" drives, you should have a section for the quantum Bigfoots. Not many 5.25" half height form factor products out there which makes them rather interesting. Two hard drives in one CD-ROM bay? Craziness!

Re: vSphere or Hyper-V for hypervisor

If cost is a concern, look at XenServer from Citrix. It is their packaging of the Xen hypervisor. I have liked what I have used of it. Deployed 8 nodes with local storage, nothing fancy. 8 nodes covering 4 or 5 servers per node. There are products like veeam for Xen as well. Your main concern going ...

Re: Battery for UPS

No man, the tech for lead acid battery systems hasn't changed for decades. I think maybe some electronics are improved with better capacitors or whatnot, but I was a manager at that batteries plus a decade ago and it's the same now as it ever was. Maybe if the UPS incorporated some of that PulseTech...

Re: Music on a very old computer

Also, many MOD files (short for MODules which I guess are sound modules) have 4 channels since they originated on the original Amiga that had a dedicated sound chip, the PAULA which can hardware mix 4 channels. Not bad for a system with 1 MB of RAM and 8 MHz 6800 CPU!

Re: Music on a very old computer

MOD files did require more power for mixing. That was the advantage of the Gravis UltraSound card. GUS could hardware mix something like 12 channels at 16 bit and 44 KHz and above that it scaled back to 22 KHz or something. SoundBlaster didn't get that type of hardware mixing until the AWE32 where i...
