Re: Every few years, painful MS Office "upgrade"

My problem with the office upgrade cycle is that Microsoft have now killed installations of multiple Office versions. It used to be that I could install Access 97, 2003, etc and still have an up to date copy of office for normal tasks. Now if you install Office 2016 it uninstalls all other versions ...

Re: RTS genre

Maybe its just a market percentage thing. RTS games only really make sense with a keyboard and mouse, they don't work on a console with a controller and they don't work on mobile. That cuts out a large portion of the gaming market. As for myself, I mainly play turn based games now, it lets me walk a...

Re: Windows 10. Why so expensive?

Don't use SteamOS, any modern Distro will work. I'm using Manjaro Linux which is a non-expert version of Arch. https://manjaro.org/ Ubuntu 16.04 doesn't like something (maybe the mSata drive), but Ubuntu 14.04 detects everything properly. You can still upgrade Windows 7/8.1 to 10 for free using the...

However - the aussy dollar is **** so that's probably why. It's about $100 usd on amazon, same as ever.

This is probably the reason, the last time I bought an OS was probably 2014, more like 1:1 rather than 1.0:0.76.

Wait Play-asia is dodgy? I've ordered a bunch of games and peripherals (fight sticks) from them and never had any trouble. Hardware wise they seem OK, but software (especially Microsoft) has always been touch and go. The way Play Asia sells the software breaks Microsoft's EULA. The software seems t...

Windows 10. Why so expensive?

I picked up a bunch of 2nd hand stuff to build a PC for my 7yr old son (Shuttle S77R5, i3 2120, 8GB, GTX 760, 128Gb mSATA and 500Gb HD). Total cost around $200 AUD. Only component left to buy is the OS. When did purchasing the Windows operating system become so expensive? I was expecting to pay $80-...

1. Focus the desktop, press ALT+F4, cycle through the list of options to Shutdown (it will remember your last action).
2. Setup the Windows Power options to shutdown your PC when the power button is pressed. Press the power button.

Re: GTX 760 - Two six-pin PSU connectors in two eight-pin sl

The GTX 760 has a TDP of 170w, most of the cards came with a single 8 pin.
If you read the manual for the card it might say it can run with 1x8 pin, in which case just buy an adapter for 2x6pin to 1x8pin.

3. Use 1080 as the baseline. Maybe call it "1x HD", and anything greater is just a multiplier. 4k would be "4x HD" (again, doing a better job of showing pixel count differences). Of course, this gets weird when dealing with other resolutions. 2560x1440 would be "1.8x HD&quo...

Buy a second hand Nintendo Wii or Wii U. Pretty much any first party games are good for the kids. In the days before kids (and before tablets were cheap), I used to collect cheap and throw out PC's, fix them up and give them to oldies so they could email their grand kids. I did 400+ PC's over about 8 years. There is always someone happy to have a donated PC.

If you want to scare people away or just give them second thoughts then use a combination of sensor lights, dummy cameras and an empty alarm box with a timed LED pulse at night.

If you want to help the cops to find someone after the fact then your going to need a good quality camera.
