Re: I sure wish I have a 40" 4K display...

This. You need right around 3 feet distance for a 40+-inch 4K monitor in my experience. Closer than that, and you'll start having field-of-view problems. <SNIP>... It's also GIGANTIC on my desk. Would have been fine with a 32", but 40" is the sweet spot for price, unfortunately. I think I'...

Re: I sure wish I have a 40" 4K display...

Probably OP, but as I mentioned in my first post, I have this beast - and heartily recommend it! :D This is a 42.5" monitor from LG. Does 4K and freesync http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-43UD79-B-4k-uhd-led-monitor It should feel like four full HD 21inch screens when split 4 ways. Maybe you sho...

Do you code? Because if you do, trust me - try 3840 by 2160 and you'll never go back.

Re: I sure wish I have a 40" 4K display...

If your primary goal is productivity, then you should definitely make sure that text displays well. I have 3 40+ inch 4K displays in current use: - Philips BDM4065UC: 40-inch MVA panel, vibrant colours, good text reproduction, not the best colour accuracy or backlight. No HDCP 2.2 support (required ...

Re: Interesting Threadripper story... and nugget!!!

I absolutely agree about the genesis of the HEDT market. But the point of the original article was that this particular HEDT product was cooked up outside of the existing product roadmap, by a bunch of enthusiasts inside AMD. The story details are surprising enough to carry a whiff of verisimilitude...

Re: Interesting Threadripper story... and nugget!!!

Re Scott being in RTG, as opposed to original AMD - you're quite right. It's still _really_ interesting, and you'll note that the quote in the article itself strongly implies that one or more ex-reviewers were directly involved in the early "skunkworks" phase of development. So in this cas...

Interesting Threadripper story... and nugget!!!

So, by happenstance I came across this Forbes story on how Threadripper entered production: https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2017/09/05/amd-ryzen-threadripper-the-fascinating-story-behind-the-processor-that-beat-intel/#2c22200a230c And then on Page 3 of said story, I saw this little nugget...

Re: WD Caviar Black x2: Windows RAID vs. Intel RAID

<SNIP - because of the quote-nesting limitation> While most of your post is great, I don't understand the last part. Consider: isn't performance more vital for the boot drive than, well, any other? Isn't this why when people only have one SSD it's invariably the boot disk? I just want to make sure ...

Also important to note that these results (if legit, which seems fairly likely) won't factor in the usual improvements that come with mature drivers. The Kepler and Tahiti cards that this was tested against already have most of their performance improvements in place. This card is likely _more_ impr...

Re: PCIe SATA III 6G Port add in cards -1GB/s?

In addition to not meeting your throughput requirement on paper, there's virtually no chance of getting a _quality_ product at that price point. Also, are you planning to RAID those SSD's? It sounds like you are. If so, you are _very_ likely to need a better card, even using software RAID in Linux.

Re: Migrating a Dell OS drive to the Samsung 830 Series SSD

The missing Dell recovery partition is almost certainly the cause of your problem. In general, Acronis TrueImage is what I recommend for migrating commercial OEM Windows installations to SSD. Windows 7 backup/restore only works for a single-partition installation, and Acronis is - as you found - def...

Re: People who say "RAID1 is not a backup"

True dat - that's why I have a full-on UPS. I hope you are joking. A UPS won't stop lightning because there is still a conductor connection going through it. It will just be one more thing to die when the strike comes. Sigh. At least the _possibility_ that I was joking occurred to you. You obviousl...

Yes, I'm sure a PSU's surge suppression circuitry will stop a lightning strike.

Re: Looking for good white box store/techs near Marlboro, NJ

This is sort of a system builder question, I guess. I've got a buddy who lives in that area (about 500 miles away), and he's got what looks like a toasted motherboard. I'm trying to find a white-box (i.e. non-Best Buy) store who'll diagnose (and if necessary) replace the MB without charging an arm ...

I've got to head out now, but I can try Fedora 11 x86 or x64 later if you'd like. My guess, though, is that I just don't have whatever factor that's causing your problem.
