Re: What do you do with games you already completed?

It's not the same as it was twenty years ago? ... You don't say. If games came with "feelies" like they did back in the day, you'd see more people hanging on to their games, instead of beating them, and ditching them at Gamespot for a few measly ducats off the next game. You realize store...

Re: Sennheiser HD280 headphones

They responded to EQing really well and the noise cancellation helps to make them sound better. I'd go so far as to say EQ is required, otherwise they come off sounding incredibly flat and boring. Because of the isolation, they're my go-to headphones for large/loud LANs but I still prefer the sound...

Re: less than terrific hdd shopping at microcenter

I got my "cheap" 1TB WD Green drives (80 a piece). As I suspected they were old stock at bestbuy.ca. They aren't the advanced format drives, and the manuf. date is early 2010. :o They're sold out of them now. And I might be a sadist, but I'm using two of them in RAID 1 as the main drives ...

Re: First new gaming machine since Team Fortress 2

I wouldn't bother with BFBC2, Borderlands, or L4D(2) unless you have friends who will play with you. BF3 will displace BFBC2 for multiplayer and all 3 games have weak single player offerings. BFBC2 has mediocre scripting, especially compared to COD, Borderlands is tedious and a sloppy console port w...

Re: Good sound without a discrete sound card

Also keep in mind that onboard sound is a lot better than it used to be 10, or even 5 years ago. Unless you're fairly picky about sound quality, the onboard analog outputs of your motherboard may actually be "good enough". I've been pretty happy with the onboard on most of the Asus mother...

Is this something I can do myself? Yes, setting it up is not difficult, but you may want/need a helper to make life easier. And, will I want a Preamplifier? Check out the Sony MDR-NC500D. I believe you will find them to be superior to the QC15. AKG, Sennheiser, Denon, and Audio Technica all make ANC headphones as well, so you might check those out. I'm not familiar with the SQ (not a fan of ANC in the first place), but from what I've read it tends to b...

I'd just use a VM or get the free-tier server on Amazon EC2 rather than build/run another machine for tinkering. The only thing you might lose out on is GPU acceleration depending on the distro/VM software. VMs are nice, but there is always the temptation to go back to the host OS when things get t...

Re: Using Nix as a Router

Smoothwall or m0n0wall-mod is probably your best bet if you want something full featured. You can also try Tomato or DD-WRT, but I'd say those abstract most of the *nix stuff away. Is your goal to get more into *nix or just get into some router software that happens to be using *nix as the underlyin...

One of the Swiftech kits is probably your best bet if you insist on a kit. It's basically just a collection of their normal wc'ing parts + tubing, etc. You can upgrade parts as you go along, but I'd recommend planning out what you want to cool ahead of time, how many loops you want, how important so...

For multi-disk games, each disk gets its own install. You don't need 21GB of contiguous space; probably closer to 7GB at a time. Still, I don't think that's a good use of thumb drives. Just buy a ready-to-go hard drive . That seems pretty cheap - honestly, almost TOO cheap - but it has rave user re...
