Re: Eclipse on August 21

The center of the eclipse will pass through about four miles north of my house. If you can believe local TV news, then my little town is expected to be flooded with about 250,000 tourist. I'm staying home Monday.

Re: Can a 144Hz display help reduce eye strain?

I spend a lot of time writing, and I used to get eyestrain and headaches if I worked for more than two or three hours without taking half-hour long breaks. I use an IPS panel at 60Hz. After trying a number fixes I discovered that working with black text on a white screen was the culprit. I now use L...

Re: How to install Word on Ubuntu

Thanks for all the replies. I'll give Cross Over a try. I use Libre Office for everything except word processing. Libre's Writer if good for short documents, but it's Normal mode is very annoying for long documents, but that's just a matter of taste. I just prefer Word's Normal display mode. (Out of...

How to install Word on Ubuntu

I've tried using WINE to install Word 2002 (MS Works Suite 2003) but keep getting "serious error". Is there a way to get it to work?

Recommend a secure Email service?

Can anyone recommend an Email service that does not scan the contents of their customer's mail? Gmail and the like are fine for most mail, but I need to send documents that need to be secure for business reasons.

Re: I already hate Windows 10

Installing Win10 is a bit like getting a free home improvement. With the free upgrade the company automatically removes all blinds and curtains, and plants microphones and cameras. It's the new normal , so get used to it. No matter what justifications MS gives, and even if it actually intends...

Re: A family's tragedy

Update Columbia, SC: The police have released a video showing the suspect. He's black with dreadlocks. I hope they get him off the streets before he can hurt anyone else. I don't think that I'll ever be able to wrap my mind around how someone can shoot down a stranger in cold blood like that. A mind...

A family's tragedy

The 32 year old son of a dear family friend was shot and killed last night. He had just become engaged. My god, it felt like a slap to the face when I heard. I immediately hugged my kid. Don't forget to hug yours tonight. :(

Much of the math I learned seemed to already be inside my head; studying it felt like I was being reminded of something I already knew. For me, learning the multiplication tables was by far the most difficult math. Basic algebra was a bit easier. Undergraduate calculus, differential equations, linea...

My ancient PCI X-Fi Extreme Music died a couple of weeks ago, and I replaced it with a Xonar DX. With both my Sennheiser HD 500 headphones and my Logitech 5.1 speakers the Xonar produces cleaner and warmer tones from lows through highs. The X-Fi produced a louder bass, with more punch, but was a bit...

American Sniper

Outstanding movie, and an equal to Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. The violence was as horrific as you would expect from a realistic war movie, but those scene's were almost always quickly executed, and then done with. Still, is isn't appropriate for kids, or anyone squeamish. But violence...

Lenovo laptops and the infamous white list.

The wifi on my kid's Lenovo G505 recently stopped working. "This should be an easy fix," I thought. Just order a generic card, pop open the laptop, and swap the new for the old. I priced generic cards at $5 to $50. But, it's not that simple. When the laptop boots it checks to be sure that ...
