Re: So, what do you guys think of the new Ryzen 5000 series?

I'm mostly speaking of the insufferable chuckula. It's one thing to acknowledge a product as superior, but he and some other people just had some deep emotional connection and were really into intel. They all conveniently faded away after it became obvious intel was essentially failing on every fron...

I'm sad that we will never find out if chuckula left because intel stopped his checks, or if it was due to the slow death of TR. I would have liked to see his take on the current situation. 350 W 10900 K, but a strong quarter for intel, right?

Re: Competition brings CPU price cuts to the desktop

I'd be happy to eventually pick up a 9900k, but prices there are sitting high. It's almost worth it to build a new Ryzen 4 system in the future and pass this along to the partner.

Re: AMD Zen 2: Ryzen 3000 series

I'm torn about whether building a 9600K PC last Nov 2018 was worth it. At that time I purchased the chip to give me the best minimum FPS in BFV, but now I wonder if I should have bought into AM4 instead. Oh well ... there's still the option of passing the intel PC to the partner and building a fresh...

blah blah blah Bruh, if you can said to me with a straight face that you knew the 7 nm would decline and be replaced by 16 nm a few quarters ago, I would say that you're full of ****. You're doing a victory lap on the trough of what is clearly some sort of historical sinusoidal trend, and you don't...

For all the people whining that Intel's numbers are down a bit year over year, let's take a look at the competition (and no, I don't mean AMD): Here's Samsung: Profits off 56%. Poor Intel not running a bunch of smartphones can't match that 56% profit crater: https://www.zdnet.com/article/samsung-q2...

A dynamic downgrade from gold to silver seems like an oversight; the fairer policy would be to lock you into a tier at the time of purchase.

Re: [Fixed!] The Sad State of Appliances (in this case, Refrigerators)

I thought with most things, it is the on/off cycle where most of the wear occurs. It this also generally true of compressors and other electric motor-driven stuff? However, there's another part that frequent on-off cycling can kill: the thermostat. What do you do if you can't find the original part...

Re: [Fixed!] The Sad State of Appliances (in this case, Refrigerators)

To extend the life of those plastics, you may be able to use some lithium-based or silicon-based food safe greases. Any abrasive dust gets in there, it will grind it down again without some grease to keep the crud out. We were tossing around the idea of getting a new fridge, and found that the best...

Re: Intel declares bankruptcy (RIP 1968-2019)

Here's what makes AVX-512 interesting: Despite the fact that it has its roots in performing highly parallelized math (floating point linear algebra operations in particular) the modern AVX-512 implementations are an *extremely* powerful general-purpose instruction set that really unleashes the CPU ...

Re: Intel declares bankruptcy (RIP 1968-2019)

I get that, but will the speed of running on only 4x K80's offset access to 28 cores that I can partition across my jobs? I can see a scenario where access to lots of AVX512 cores is more price effective than an equivalent amount of GPUs. Surely this question would be moot if I could access XSEDE or...

I guess the question is this: I have access to the following compute nodes: 28 x Intel E5-2680v4 @ 2.4 GHz 64 GB 4 x Nvidia K80 GPU I have a program that diagonalizes a large matrix and does a lot of other linear algebra stuff. If I have to run this program 100 times, would I get the job done faster...
