Re: Form factor trends

Non replaceable part computers have been done many times before, and technically a smartphone is one of them. The big reason they don't do this, is when a ram stick goes bad, or the cpu dies...you have to send back the whole unit to be replaced. Plus another issue is you have to support multiple ver...

Re: Just lost my cat Zoe

Getting back on topic, I'm raising a glass to Zoe's memory. While I did not know her well, I believe I've actually met her (briefly), while helping Starfalcon carry his TRBBQ swapfest loot up to his apartment a couple of years ago. yeah you did, she was a very friendly cat who liked to meet new peo...

Re: Just lost my cat Zoe

Well I just got more bad news today, found out my other cat spunky has fatal stomach cancer. It really hurts loosing my second cat who is only 8 years old within 6 months of loosing my older cat. I hope I have a few weeks before I have to make the decision.

Re: Eclipse on August 21

I was disappointed here, lots of cloud cover and I could barely tell there was an eclipse. We were in the 90% band here , but it never really got much darker than an overcast day. At least some people got some nice pics and videos.

Re: Vintage Computer Overclocking: i5 2500K

I used a 80x38 EHE delta on my OCed 2500 athlon XP systems for years, and it was loud as hell 52 Db and ran 5.5k rpm or so. kept the proc extremely cool though, at the price of hearing loss :( . Although that fan didnt have anything on the 60x38 8k rpm delta I used for a previous build 62 Db of ear ...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

SecretSquirrel, I know that feeling well. Takes about the same amount of time to swap a battery in my car. Ironically my car is now also in the shop for new front struts... but that leads into a general question I wanted to ask... Today came out of my favorite sub shop after lunch and found the car...

Re: A case with LOTs of mounts for fans, and a question about thermal paste

IIRC some of the older formulations of AS used to separate and harden eventually. I don't recall which ones had this issue though. Biggest issue with AS is that it's a PITA to clean up. In general it's decent. Ive been using AS forever, never had any issues cleaning it off, always came right off wi...

Re: Intel needs to fire thier marketing team.

Windows XP, well I should say used to be XP...when I fired it up earlier today, hard drive looks like it went to the drive graveyard in the sky. Considering how old the drive is and had a ton of hours on it, I guess it did not too bad. I used to run this one 24/7 for many many years, but when electr...

I honestly don't recall. Maybe one of the long-time forum denizens who knew him IRL will comment. It's probably documented in a forum post somewhere.

Action Jim is still alive, just busy with his family.

Re: TR BBQ XIV - Official Thread (7/15/17 confirmed)

I just might join the junkyard this year and this is what I KNOW I can bring: Abit IP35 Pro with a seated C2D E6600 that happily ran at 3.2 for many a year (it's been in its original static bag since decom). Board also comes with 8 GiB of ADATA DDR2-800 (4x2 Gib). Slap a HSF on it and you've got a ...

Abit was still around in mid-2007, as I bought my IP35 Pro based on this TR roundup review. It was about a year after I bought the board that Abit went Tango Uniform. http://techreport.com/review/12747/five-flavors-of-intel-p35-express-compared Yeah the US subsidiary went under late 05, the taiwan ...

They were still around and made a lot of really good socket A boards, I have a huge pile of them from back then. They actually didn't go under until late 2005, I have one of their last AM2 boards they released.

Re: Personal Supercomputer, didn't know there was such a thing.

yeah it seems the only time intel really pushes hard for change is when AMD gives them a reason to do so, otherwise they coast along barely inovating. It is absolutely crazy that you can still be fine with a 10 year old rig at this point, it just shows how badly intel has been milking people. Now th...

They even apparently have 'em at K-Mart, though for $18 more. I am sure there are other examples such that an agreeable seller is available for most people. 8) All of the K-Marts near me have closed, so I would need to pay shipping, or expend gas/time to get to one that's still open. Re: Power sags can't hurt electronics right?

FWIW, my reasonably-priced 1500 VA UPS is rated for 900 watts for two minutes or 450 watts for eleven minutes. It keeps my PC and monitors powered up for 20 minutes of web browsing. It uses two 8½ Amp-hour 12 Volt batteries, so, at full draw, it's getting only 15% of the rated energy in the batteri...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

That's good at least, I had a dell laser printer at my last job and had stocked up on toners for it, when the current one ran out, I grabbed the oldest one in the back and installed it. The new toner read as empty even though it was brand new and full, and I couldn't get it to work and had to end up...
