Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

the reason for these differences (beyond no more than about 2% (FPS) gain) is (largely): DRAW DISTANCE . Sure, that makes a lot of sense. BF4 & GTA:V would both fit into that category. But, small urban scenes in The Witcher 3 show big boosts from RAM speed alone: http://prnt.sc/bypocu EDIT: yik...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

I know one thing, with performance increases being few and far in between these days, the next build I'm doing will have 1 module per channel (for best speeds) and the fastest damn RAM modules I can reasonably buy. Back when I bought my i5-2500K common sense was that it absolutely did not matter ou...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

I don't have time to read every reply in the thread, but did they do any testing with a single card? I know SLI/Crossfire is a kludge that relies on the PCIe bus and there is a software component of this as part of the driver that runs in system RAM. As such, faster RAM would very likely impact dua...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

Just jumping in: this has been shown for DDR4 now, as well. In some places, a RAM OC gives you as much FPS as a CPU OC --I'm stunned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er_Fuz54U0Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSU0UWFCa1Y Shame other outlets picked this up before TR will. Re: I just watched the Polaris "Update" Live

AMD now has to sell a boatload of $200 cards to pay for new expenditures first before they potentially start making a profit. Since when do you need to recoup all R&D costs of an architecture with one SKU in one product cycle? They spent years with GCN 1.x. I suspect they'll take/need years to ...

Re: I just watched the Polaris "Update" Live

So far the implication is that the RX 480 has a 1.2 Ghz clock speed which far lower than the 1.6 Ghz we're seeing out of nVidia. That's a 400 Mhz difference or 33% higher than its current clock to catchup to where nVidia is currently at. Granted nVidia has a higher TDP and thus more room to increas...

Re: I just watched the Polaris "Update" Live

You didn't miss out on much. There is no official launch date. That June 29 NDA lift date? No confirmation that anything is launching on June 29. A seemingly too-good-to-be-true $199 price has been "confirmed" except for where Lisa Su (AMD's CEO) directly contradicted Raj (RTG Group Lead ...

Nice! Good buy. And they're pretty cheap, too.

How are you measuring latency? Mathematically or are you using some benchmark?

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

Charts show significant improvements with DDR4-3200 over DDR4-2400 so I'm not sure I understand why you say it looks "ok now". As a high refresh rate, xfire and DDR3-1600 user I think I see a reason to buy one last kit of DDR3. Err, true. It's mostly under 6% except for The Witcher (14%)....

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

A terrible necropost, but since I'm the OP, I thought I would chime in. Someone recently shared this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-is-it-finally-time-to-upgrade-your-core-i5-2500k If you game above 60Hz, stock DDR3 RAM could be a bottleneck. Re: Windows 7 64bit - 32gb only 2.60 usable?!

Hmm...funky. If you're not feeling up to re-installing, SFC never hurts. I always forget the proper arguments, but here's a nice guide for it. EDIT: Since you see it in Linux, I guess it's not hardware. But, if you're at odd's end, re-seating the RAM and CPU (yeah, I've heard RAM going missing becau...

Re: Skylake Delidded and no, it wasn't me

Heatspreaders aren't meant for "better" thermal conduction. They are designed to protect the CPU die from physical stresses imposed by modern HSF solutions. Delidding the IHS does improved thermal conduction but it makes your CPU vulnerable to physical stresses that can easily kill your c...

Re: Skylake Delidded and no, it wasn't me

Sheesh, this thread was derailed quite quickly. If you guys don't mind, you could certainly make a new thread about thermal throttling/shutdowns/unicorns. I'm curious: with these die-shrinks and IHS' that aren't really spreading the heat, is a new paradigm called for in CPU cooling "contact&quo...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

A couple of observations while reading through this thread. No one has brought up the possibility of running the main bus at different speeds due to different memory speeds. Depending on the motherboard, I've seen small variances (several Mhz) crop up in the base clock. Considering that the perform...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

I'm not part of the larger argument here; I've been saying that RAM latency presents a significant source of hitching and stutters for some time now. You guys are discussing using FPS measurements, which aren't interesting to me. HOWEVER, you don't seem to know what 'outlier' means in a statistical...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

Note that is also a CrossFire configuration. If nothing else it seems that faster (lower latency to be precise) RAM may benefit multi GPU systems. This is news to me, but I have very little knowledge about such systems - it could well be common knowledge to enthusiasts. --- Wait, hold on. From that...

Merry Christmas, everyone! :D And so begins the uber-reply. :D It only matters at hardcore overclocking and when the game isn't GPU-bound on a dual-channel DDR3 rig. Otherwise, it is a trivial difference for stock system, especially Socket 2011 rigs. 1. Since when has overclocking been a non-issue f...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

Personally, it looks like nothing too new when you have the CPU as the "bottleneck" point when your testing. It would make sense that the CPU with faster RAMS would actually be quicker overall when the GPU is actually anything less than 100% loaded too (and in-turn becomes the "bottl...

Interesting, but made less so because the settings aren't intensive enough to stress even that last gen card. It's two overclocked GTX 780s running BF4 on Ultra @ 5760x1200. It's chugging along with a minimum frame-rate of 35, average 47. What are smoking? I was referring to the overclocks member, ...

Re: RAM Frequency and Games [maybe TR can investigate!]

I don't remember when I last saw RAM speeds having such a profound effect in gaming (other than with integrated graphics). I had a look at the thread linked, it seems that being CPU bound makes the difference larger. Corsair chose to use an SLI configuration and the Overclock.net member chose to us...
