Re: Interesting Threadripper story... and nugget!!!

Wasn't me, guys. I am indeed on the graphics side of things and was very busy otherwise when this happened. I'm pretty sure some of the former press guys on the CPU side are quoted or named in the article, including James Prior (Rage 3), Don Woligroski (Tom's), and Robert Hallock (dunno which site)....

Re: Come test game performance in the Radeon Technologies Gr

This job sounds like it would be a blast! I hope one of the TR gerbils makes the cut. And hey Scott, how's things going? Must be going at least passably well given that you're hiring, eh? :D Hey, things are going well. This is a position in a lab in Markham (Toronto area) run by another guy in my g...

Come test game performance in the Radeon Technologies Group

Indulge me as I offer a bit of a public service announcement. My group at AMD is hiring. If you're in the Toronto area and you are into PC gaming and performance, check out this opportunity.

Re: Frame Time Benchmarking - Question on Time Spent Beyond

I've been asked to weigh in on this question, so I'll try to contribute what I can. I have a few thoughts. On variance from frame to frame: One of the key issues with measuring animation smoothness meaningfully is understanding what things our visual systems actually perceive as problems. Since we s...

Local repair shop took a look at that picture and said it's a bad panel, not worth replacing given the price. Guess it's time to buy a new TV.

Diagnose my gimpy TV!

I have a Toshiba Regza 52" LCD TV, model number 52RV53U, manufactured July 2008, that has intermittent display corruption that looks like this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/68992780/tv.jpg Everything I've found online makes it sound like the problem involves stuff attached to the edges o...

Re: Skylake may feature "inverse hyperthreading"?

Talked to Andreas from C't who seems to have sparked this rumor. He was trying to understand a perf gain that came from another place, mostly 2X ring and LLC bandwidth improving performance in SPEC CPU, and so he speculated about this sort of thing. Clearly is not what's happening with Skylake, thou...

Re: thoughts on power virus games and GPU Boost

Just wanted to drop in and say that Nvidia's GPU Boost algorithm has had temperature caps built into it forever, and they can be configured by the user to prevent the GPU from reaching whatever temperature you deem too high. Nvidia also introduced frame-rate targeting via NVAPI. It's in EVGA Precisi...

Well, I'm flying out of Grand Rapids on Sunday and into San Francisco for a week at IDF, but it looks like I'll be able to attend. I can't stuff a car full of things to give away, but I'll think of something to bring as a grand prize, at least, I suspect. Sadly, I don't think Nathan or Adam will be ...

Re: monitor calibration?

It depends. Hardware yes, software, you need to look on the display support. But IIRC there is also open source tools that support some colorimeters so you can measure whatever you wan't and not create a profile. Just set it to the best of your ability. You can measure and if you have RGB Controls ...

Re: monitor calibration?

The 27" Auria has a nice IPS panel and could easily benefit from calibration. Even a relatively affordable colorimeter will yield good results, and you can use it on laptops, HTPCs, whatever PC is connected to a screen. This looks promising from X-Rite for 75 bucks: http://www.amazon.com/X-Rite...

Your comments about the glossy screen of M4000 were interesting. Have you encountered a display like that in the current generation of laptops that works well outdoors? Well, I just got an Asus UX305 with a matte display, but matte/glossy is not the biggest issue: it's the effectiveness of the anti...
