Re: Skylake X: Bye Bye Rings, Hello Mesh

Kougar, I think you've got an accurate description there; despite your protests you seem to have a handle on the Ryzen design :) The way I'd put it is this: AMD is essentially putting a 4-socket system on a chip (MCM module). That's actually more true than you know if you read their Epyc design gui...

Re: Fake Ryzen chips

I'd be on the lookout for any reseller with the last name of Krzanich . I'm just sayin... I wouldn't be buying from a reseller period. In that case you won't have to worry about fake chips. These aren't coming from Amazon's official warehouses, it's from shady third-parties with Amazon store fronts.

Liquid Cooled Vega 0wns GurgleMark!

PC Perspective wins the award for imagery on page 1 of this review of the liquid-cooled iteration of Vega Frontier Edition. As for the rest of it: They can push the Vega FE to 440 watts of consumption but that only puts them in the same neighborhood at a GTX-1080 in gaming benchmarks. Yes, OMG Drive...

Re: X299 CPU Power Plugs/Temps (+ X399)

Would've vastly preferred if they could've gotten decent cooling for the VRMs without the use of an additional fan. It's just one more thing to fail. The VRMs were in-spec at 340 watts of consumption* even without the fan, it's just that with the fan the temperature dropped noticeably. Frankly you ...

Re: X299 CPU Power Plugs/Temps (+ X399)

To stay in spec, a 4-hot/8-pin EPS12V can legally carry 28 amps at 12 volts, or 300 watts per EPS12V. Der8auer has posted a new, short vid on the redesigned ASUS Apex VRM cooling. He was able to attain 340 watts without the VRMs throttling making it the first board to do so. The cooler actually has...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

I'm willing to believe the Fiji drivers theory. Because there is way more going on than just a bad launch. A simple die shrink of Fiji would get better results than this. Why the hell wouldn't AMD just release a 14nm Fiji and be done with it, if these were the numbers they were looking at? And that...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

Not in my experience That's because it's largely a myth. To the extent that there is a difference, it probably comes to down to Nvidia just not bothering to include the game-specific profiles with the Quadro drivers. Which matters somewhat for some games, very little for others, and not-at-all for ...

The latest theory/excuse is that the Vega FE is not using the tiled rendering feature https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/6kdwea/vega_fe_doesnt_seem_to_be_doing_tiled/djld98t/ I'm not sure if that's correct or incorrect, but for a product that has officially launched and is available for purchase,...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

The PCPer results tonight were pretty bad. On average, it was closer to 1070 than 1080, while pulling about 280 watts. They're gonna have to price these pretty damn cheap to keep it from bombing even worse than Fiji. Ouch. I was thinking it would at least be ~1080 or a little better with the downsi...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

Hmm... The guy in the link says it wasn't holding a constant 1600 MHz during the 3DMark run. Could that have something to do with the tester using a barely adequate PSU (550W)? 550W PSU with 504W available on the 12V line. Not inadequate (on paper). To put that in perspective, people were screaming...

That could be due to a lot of factors including throttling (bad) or the fact that some sections of the benchmark are just less demanding (neutral).

There's of course going to be the usual brouhaha over drivers not being "optimized" so the test isn't "fair". On the flipside, while it's probably true that the drivers are not perfectly optimized, you'd think that a card with Vega's level of raw hardware power and Vega's level o...

Just kidding. I don't eat it often but thin sliced and crisped spam goes great in a lot of recipes and even makes a good bacon substitute (sacrilege I know).
