Re: EeeBox PC unusably slow.

So I tried removing the hard drive and turning off quick boot, and there was no change in the performance. I downloaded that BIOS update, but I've never tried to update the BIOS without first booting to the OS, and the instructions for updating the BIOS on this machine don't seem to include an optio...

Re: EeeBox PC unusably slow.

Thanks, I'll give those suggestions a try, although I probably won't have a chance until sometime tomorrow. As for clearing the CMOS, I'm not sure if I can access it. Once you open up the case the only thing you can really get at is the memory slots (the hard drive has a separate caddy). Everything ...

EeeBox PC unusably slow.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes. I just bought an Asus EeeBox PC EB1012P barebones nettop to use as an HTPC. I installed 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM and a 250GB hard drive I had from an old laptop, and tried to boot it up. It took about two minutes to even display anyt...

Re: sandy bridge/battlefield 3 build

Well, AA or no AA depends on the res and memory requirements. I rather run in native resolution with a good FPS than a lower scaled res with AA with the same FPS unless its scaled 1:2, etc. But 1280x800 is too low a res for me anyway so... At 2560x1600, each level of AA usually adds significant imp...

Re: First Time Builder - Mid-Range System Summer 2011

Processor wise I have the Intel i5 2500k in mind (but I still don't know if I should be waiting for Bulldozer). GPU is going to be one of the AMD 69XX most likely unless it would be better to get a dual-card set-up or something else; that is an area I am inexperienced in. Are there any Nvidia cards...

Re: PCI-based WiFi adapters - are they any good?

I used a PCI based wireless card for a few months a while back when we were sort of in between houses. While I didn't do anything super bandwidth intensive at the time, to be honest I didn't really notice any difference. Our internet service wasn't near fast enough to saturate the wireless connectio...

Um, okay. This one costs the same and is brand new.

But yeah, ever since the GTX 560 came out prices on the 460 have plummeted. Pretty dang good value still. Especially when you consider that card debuted at $250 less than a year ago.

Re: system build in june, advice requested

Being ready for Battlefield 3 is the wild card there. We don't really know what kind of system requirements that game will require, although judging from what we have seen of the game, it will probably require a pretty hefty system, at least if you want to turn everything up. For all the other games...

Looks pretty sweet for being not an entirely new system.

I have a question for anyone who might know, though: what's the difference between Asus' PRO series motherboards and the non PRO versions?

Well, I guess that explains why I was confused about it, if the rules they have aren't applied 100%. Just for clarification, I'm not actually planning on replacing my motherboard anytime soon, by the time I do, Windows 8 might be out anyway.

Re: H67 and 2600 Build

Looks like a good build, I think the CPU and mobo you chose will be a great fit for your needs. As for the graphics card, here is a 5750 that's slightly cheaper than the one you listed, and if you don't mind mail-in rebates, here is a 5770 that ends up cheaper if you ever get the rebate back. It doe...

Problems with Windows OEM Installs?

So I know that the OEM versions of Windows you can buy are licensed to only be installed on a single computer, but as someone who regularly upgrades individual components in my PC, what constitutes the same computer is a bit of a gray area. I personally have been able to install Windows 7 OEM on a n...

Re: First build: Gaming and General Purposes for <$1000

Your build looks quite good, there's nothing that stands out as needing to be changed, but you will want to get a better CPU cooler if you want to overclock. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 + is a popular one on these forums that's also reasonably priced. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=...

I feel your pain as far as being more confused the more reviews you read, but take heart! All the cards we're talking about are great and you can't really go wrong with any of them. If it rubs you the wrong way to be using slightly older tech, then just go with airmantharp's suggestion and get one o...

Re: Upgrading my gaming box

I kinda disagree. That saphhire 5850 xtreme card sells for $139. It gives 2x or greater the frame rates of the 5770, and is faster than both the gtx 560ti in most games that don't overwhelmingly favor nvidia architecture, and the radeon 6850, despite being cheaper than both. Look at the review. Its...

Well, the exact steps are going to be a little different depending on which OS you're using, but your best bet is to locate your Firefox profile on your old hard drive. On Windows 7 and Vista it's under C:/Users/Your Username/Appdata/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles. You may have to enable "sho...

Re: Crysis 2 :(

What I meant was that Crysis 2 still has a ways to go to reach that figure. Which is fair to say, but it's practically meaningless: Crysis has been out for years, Crysis 2 has been out for months. While I recognize that a game's sales will typically see the biggest numbers shortly after release, th...

Re: Crysis 2 :(

Crysis 2 has sold about 1.5 million copies so far, which is pretty good for a first time entry on consoles, but quite a ways off from the sales figures of Crysis 1. Wikipedia asserts otherwise. According to The simExchange, the NPD Group reported that Crysis moved 86,633 retail units in the first t...

I'm not sure why it fell upon Crytek to be the leader of breaking PC video cards. Nor have I ever understood bringing PCs to their knees as a useful feature for gaming. Nor do I quite understand why it's okay for Blizzard and Valve to cater their PC titles to a broader PC hardware audience, but Cry...

Re: I managed to hold out until sandy bridge!

GPU: I've been reading up on turning the 6950 into a 6970. Is there a list out there as to which cards can be upgraded? I wouldn't want to buy the wrong one... It theoretically works on all the 2GB cards, just not the 6950 1GB cards. Keep in mind, though, that it's like overclocking; you'll most li...

Heh, you might be right about the RAT being hard to clean, I hadn't thought about that. One question, though. If all you want is a 5-button mouse, why are you replacing your MX-400? Is it just old? Cause if you don't really need to replace it, I'd just hold onto that one until it stops working. If y...

Re: I managed to hold out until sandy bridge!

You can flash the BIOS on the 2GB version of the 6950 to unlock the disabled shader units and basically turn it into a 6970. Also, if you have a super large monitor or a multi-monitor setup, 2GB of VRAM can be useful. If you don't want to worry about those things, though, the performance is pretty e...

I don't really know about the nitty-gritty of the license issue, but I can tell you that just a few months ago I installed OEM Windows 7 and then about a month later reinstalled it on a new hard drive when my old drive started having problems, and I had no problems with activation.
