Re: Toms Hardware going down to the bin can

I actually thought that quality of the articles at Tom's had improved in the past decade. I don't visit there very often. It was even longer ago that Kyle banned me from the [H], and I have only been back there following links from TR. Heh, most would consider a ban from [H] a badge of honor my fri...

Re: Intel declares bankruptcy (RIP 1968-2019)

I love both TLJ and this movie. I also liked both the Fugitive and US Marshalls where he played the same kind of guy, minus the southern accent. A very overlooked movie, IMO. I watched it last month on Pluto.TV and couldn't turn the channel. Very good acting all around, and the storyline was compel...

Marcus King Band !! Good God, this kid is GIFTED. I was just introduced to his music on Sirius, and looked up some YT videos. Another group that led me to look up Marcus is 'Pigeons Playing Ping Pong', a Bal'more based group that had Marcus along for a solo on 'Lightning' that just brings the house ...

Re: Time to finally take the Ryzen plunge?

That's odd, AMD hasn't change the form factor for their HSF on the desktop platform since Socket 754/940. I'm betting its the boards themselves that are causing the incompatibilities due to the I/O covers and sizeable heatsinks on the VRMs. I get a warning from PCPartpicker that the board may have ...

Re: Time to finally take the Ryzen plunge?

I'm doing a very similar upgrade to JBIs at the end of this month, using the same board, but I'm leaning towards the 2600x, as I don't need the extra cores for older games that I play. Link to my parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2jvczY After looking over my list, I may hold off on the NVMe ...

It's relatively easy to test the PSU, and I find that the PSU is always a good place to start, especially when you are talking about a power hungry card or a rig loaded with a lot of accessories or peripherals.

Re: End of an Era - Toys R Us

When I was a kid, my dad let us pick either the Star Wars Millenium Falcon or the Death Star from Kenner. I made the wrong choice with the Death Star, which was a piece of crap which quickly fell apart. I ended up buying the Falcon !! I think it was '79 IIRC. I also bought the X-wing and Darth's Ti...

Re: Average fuel consumption

Hey, fellow Durango owner? Or Jeep Commander. Either way, the best I've done in my Hemi Durango is like 13.5L/100KM which is short of 18mpg. I doubt I get more than half of that during short commutes in the winter. 'Rango it is ! 2012 Citadel. I got 18 on a trip to Philly this fall, and that was th...

Re: Average fuel consumption

I was down to 10.5 mpg but a 2 hour drive to MD upped it immensely to 14.0. 95% of my driving is in the city, so having a heavy 3 row SUV and a thirst 5.7 Hemi is a bad equation for getting good fuel economy. Luckily, I only have a 7 mile round trip daily drive to work every day, so even at those ve...

Re: Windows 10 Free Upgrade Expired?

There was also an issue over the last week of December, specifically the Windows 10 Upgrade assistant utility, that I ran into on the 28th. If you downloaded and ran the utility to upgrade to Win10, it would fail with a specific error. After looking that up, the workaround was to use an earlier vers...

Re: Windows 10 Free Upgrade Expired?

Looking for an answer on this one as well. I had a failed Win7 to 10 upgrade go through last week in one last effort to get it upgraded, but altho the OS looked to be running fine, any game I launched would complain about missing a hardware rendering device and exit. I tried it twice, second time wi...

I've been a long-time Kaspersky user, and was made aware of this free version in the past week. Re: Best way to seamlessly migrate to new Windows 10 Laptop

You can still use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate from the old PC to the new one. I use it frequently to do just that on customer PCs. What you need to do is copy the MigWiz folder onto the new PC from the Windows 7 PC, then just launch it on the old PC, start the migration wizard and specify the m...

The only thing that kills off PC gaming is the annual endorsement from Microsoft on how they are now committed to gamers on the PC. Not dissing your huge collection, but why? I'm hanging onto a PCI graphics card (for testing purposes) and an original voodoo card for nostalgia, but I loathe having boxes of old hardware taking up space. Do you have plans for all this stuff eventually? Different strokes for different folks. Why do...

You need to add a 3Dfx Voodoo 5 6000 AGP 128mb to this list !! There's a 64mb functional one on flEbay right now for $269 BIN Edit: So many memories reading the list, from the sound cards where I first learned how to resolve IRQ/DMA conflicts and running QEMM to free up enough conventional memory to...

I've been intrigued by the concept of a starfalcon inventory for years. Count me as very interested. Seconded. I have some old stuff, but due to space constraints I cannot hoard what I used to. I still have a semi-retro gaming rig set up to honor StarFalcon in his endeavors. Its gotta be rare enoug...

I was doing fine riding out any upgrades until I helped a friend upgrade his 5year old rig in November. I bought about $400 worth of gear over BF for his build, and made out VERY well - he scored a Gigabyte Z97 board, i7 4970, 8GB DDR3, Samsung 250GB 850 EVO and a Corsair H55 HSF for that amount. Un...

Takes me back to '97 when I had a Pentium 200 (MMX !!) running a pair of 4GB SCSI drives and playing Quake damn near every day. I played Quake CTF every night for about a year straight at that time. Played so much that I had to go to the eye Rx for eye irritation. Here it turns out I wasn't blinking...

Wow, how can you go from wireless to wired ?? There is NO WAY you could convince me to go back to a wired set of cans. I love my G930s, and dread the day they stop working. Not to hijack this thread, but not long ago if someone told me that I will be keeping the same CPU for six years on purpose I would have died laughing at them. Amen to this.
