Asus Sabertooth X79 (refurbished) for $100 from TD

TigerDirect has Asus' Sabertooth X79 motherboards for $99.96 with coupon code TCT156550. Offer is good until 5/12/2015 11:59 PM ET with the usual proviso of "While supplies last" http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2076258&CatId=9784 I'm not sure ...

Re: AMD's next x86 Core is "Zen"

When's the "Hot Chips" or whatever show held? Don't they usually do announcements at stuff like that? Hot Chips is in August, usually towards the end of the month. This year it's held from the 23rd - 25th. Yep, you're exactly right, Hot Chips is definitely a platform for revealing one's n...

Re: TigerDirect has AMD's FX-8310 for $90 with rebate

Oh, too bad... Yes, I should have made it clearer: this is TigerDirect US. After stating that the FX-8370E is "much more expensive" I thought I better double check that, and it is: $190 for the FX-8370E from newegg. But I saw that TigerDirect is offering these with a $50 rebate, which brin...

TigerDirect has AMD's FX-8310 for $90 with rebate

I just noticed this deal so figured I'd share it. Admittedly the $90 price is with a $25 rebate so for those with a fear of rebates there's nothing new here - the pre-rebate price hasn't changed (it's still $115). http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9494388&...

Looks like it's gone up to $120 now which kinda takes away some of the shine as you're no longer under the mental barrier of $100 (with coupon). Especially when for $5 more you can step up to the FX-8310

TD has AMD FX-8300 for $110 (or $95 with coupon)

I just noticed that Tiger Direct has the AMD FX-8300 for $109.99 which sounds like a pretty good deal, especially if you've already got a compatible motherboard. It is an OEM chip that you're getting so no stock HSF, but that does give you the opportunity to buy exactly what you want for processor c...

Re: VIA’s new Isaiah II

I wonder if Centaur's new core will have the option to use the instruction set of the underlying RISC core like their old Nehemiah did. I always thought that was so interesting: set the ALTINST bit in the FCR, execute your special jump instruction and from then on you use AIS instructions. Then when...

Re: Apparently AMD is set to slash FX CPU pricing on Septemb

I wonder how accurate that article is... Why would the E version of a SKU be the same price as a non-E? Surely fewer dies are capable of running within a 95W TDP vs 125W, right? What incentive would a user (or a system builder) have for choosing the higher TDP variant? Almost gotta be a typo. Or ma...

Re: Apparently AMD is set to slash FX CPU pricing on Septemb

Wouldn't be surprised if many of the 125W chips are running lower than rated TDP. If you've got a 100w part, and 125 is the next standard bin, well... in in it goes! The difference between the 'E' and 'standard' chips may not be anywhere near the implied 30W. That's a good point. I imagine those bi...

Re: Apparently AMD is set to slash FX CPU pricing on Septemb

Creating a new chipset for AM3+ shouldn't be too hard for AMD, although yeah, there would be little incentive for them to do so since they seem to have admitted that Bulldozer was a failure and it would be better to pour resources into their upcoming big ARM and x86 cores. They have all the buildin...

POWER8 is the only architecture that I know of that exceeds Intel's Haswell design in terms of IPC. IBM's design runs about twice as fast as comparable Xeon's but a good chunk of that speed boost is in radically higher clock speeds. Yeah, IBM's POWER designs seem to be engineered to be both braniac...

Re: Apparently AMD is set to slash FX CPU pricing on Septemb

Piledriver is pretty much at single-thread performance parity with the Phenom II when you take the higher clock speeds into account. Yeah true. And if we assume that the clock frequency ceiling for a Phenom II X6 is ~4GHz and the similar ceiling for a Vishera is ~5GHz then you do come out ahead for...

Re: Apparently AMD is set to slash FX CPU pricing on Septemb

But 220W... that's on par with big iron chips like IBM's POWER8. Admittedly there's a fair bit more harware muscle on that die though. Actually, the FX 9950 at 220W consumes more power than the POWER8 which is a 190W part. Right you are. I assumed POWER8 would be ~250W. But 190W, that's actually pr...

Re: New Build - FX-8350 & Memory Support?

I'm guessing that the Overclockers UK site is referring to the fact that AMD's FX series of CPUs (both Bulldozder and Piledriver based) support memory clock multipliers up to 1200MHz (6:1 ratio) for an effective DDR3 speed of 2400MHz. So you won't need to increase the HyperTransport clock to use mem...

Re: BIOS clock (hardware clock) runs twice as fast as it sho

Okay, we're back alive and working again. It seems that the SPI ROM had lost all of its contents. Relfashing the board externally with the latest BIOS brought it back to life. Still, not a good sign... So, I then tried with all the RAM timings set manually in the BIOS but that didn't change anything...

Re: BIOS clock (hardware clock) runs twice as fast as it sho

As an interesting test, you could pull the CPU and power the board on. Wait some amount of time then replace the CPU and start up the system. If time has run fast, the you know for sure that it is a hardware issue with the South Bridge. Now, if it doesn't run fast, this doesn't rule out anything ot...

Re: BIOS clock (hardware clock) runs twice as fast as it sho

Re-reading your OP and looking at that diagram, I'd say this strengthens the case for the Analog portion being fine; once the system is powered up, something in the Digital portion is either malfunctioning (hardware problem) or getting mis-configured (BIOS problem). I don't think we can really say ...

The RTC does behave the same way under both Linux and Windows. Sounds like the quartz crystal that regulates the RTC is damaged or defective. I'm not sure what you mean by: "It seems like once the system idles and there's no real activity though it settles to counting in twos (which is by far the most common seen behaviour)." though. If you're sittin...

I thought that at first too, but when power is removed from the system and the RTC is running off the button cell it seems to track time normally. I'll double check again tonight, but I remember testing it fairly early on... It would be good if it was the crystal - it's easy to replace. I suppose I ...

It's actually even more irregular than I made it out at the start - it can occasionally get incremented by one which can change it from counting evens to counting in odds, or it can even jump three seconds at times as well. It seems like once the system idles and there's no real activity though it s...
