Re: What Router do you use?

TP-Link TL-WR841N/ND v9 running on Openwrt. Don't use any of the cool features of Openwrt due to lack of onboard storage though I suppose I could get a USB flash stick to use for storage if I cared, mainly flashed it to Open WRT because I could. The 100mb speed of it is just fast enough for my downl...

Re: What's the last piece of tech you regret buying?

Logitech G502 perhaps, the additional buttons are kind of nice, I use the back and forward ones a ton but as for the much better sensor it has (compared to the mouse I had with a $20 logitech KB/Mouse combo) I don't even really play FPS games so it hasn't really helped me "rek noobs" or wh...

Re: What are you playing right now?

Got bored of Star Wars The Old Republic and bought the WoW starter pack or whatever and Legion. I boosted a mage to 100 and got him to 110 and now I'm working on a Demon Hunter. I got WoW because Legion is supposed be a lot better for PvP  which is the only thing I did in SWTOR. I wish I knew mages...

Re: VLC - The best worst media player?

I don't do much video consumption on the desktop these days (so perhaps I'm a bit out of the loop), but VLC has never given me any grief.  The interface isn't the greatest, but after the codec and media-player hell of the early-2000's, I'm still relieved in not really having to deal with that anymo...

Re: VLC - The best worst media player?

MPC-BE (and HC) have some nice shaders too to improve quality too, I've been running the adaptive sharpen shader post resize for videos which aren't potato quality or have some sort of edge enhancement and with madvr you have smooth motion to reduce judder without the soap opera effect How poor is ...

Re: VLC - The best worst media player?

I use MPC-BE(switched from -HC some time ago) with madvr and LAV, the upscaling in madvr is far superior to VLC and I'm not sure if there is anything better. The interface isn't an abomination like WMP or Powerdvd, it's nice and minimal, reminds me of Foobar2000. MPC-BE (and HC) have some nice shade...

Re: Audiophilia nervosa

On the subject of speakers though I have a pair of JBL studio monitors (LSR 308s) and have spent a considerable amount of time researching optimal placement, breaking out my tape measure and trying out different spots in my monitors and chair to help get the low end under control, my "office&q...

Re: Audiophilia nervosa

Do to the shape of the ear canal (IIRC) headphones exhibit wild peaks and valleys in the high frequency region, so while the midrange and below may well be much flatter than speakers because of either crappy speakers, or untreated rooms the highs are wildly colored on headphones, although I believe...

Re: Audiophilia nervosa

All I know now is that I brought a pair of Flips Audio Headphones from Walmart three years ago, and they sound great in speaker mode even with onboard audio. Most headphones are minimum phase like fullrange drivers - just one driver, they have a better chance of sounding better.  They are also very...

For the sake of an easy comparison here's a link to the anandtech bench comparison between the two. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1718?vs=1731 Your cpu really isn't all that slow for gaming btw, here's what it looks like compared...

Here's an old one since my desk is all cluttered atm, I have a less ghetto curtain setup now and a pair of JBL LSR 308s to replace those M-Audios.

Here's a tangent to this topic: the new Metallica song  actually sounds good , in the literal sense. (On the "good song" angle, I think it's brutally awesome, but thrash metal isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea). You can actually hear the thunder of the bass when it kicks in, you can tel...

6700k @ 4.5ghz and 980 ti
Stock 980 ti: http://www.3dmark.com/spy/51304
Overclocked 980 ti: http://www.3dmark.com/spy/51752
Core clock won't go much higher, memory might have more left but I think 8ghz is pretty decent and I'm not sure a higher memory clock would help much.

Re: Whats the most recent dumb thing you did to your PC?

Today I switched out one of the fan brackets on my 212 evo today because the one on there didn't clamp very well(no cracks, just was flimsy) so it was barely attached to the heatsink and would cause vibrations that were a tad a annoying so I switch it out and installed the fan brackets on the wrong ...

Re: ASIO vs WASAPI vs DirectSound

Either there's a driver problem with your soundcard or you suffer from a horrible problem called the placebo effect, many audiophiles suffer from it. Btw I do audio production and if there were a universal problem with the audio stack in windows 8/10 I would almost certainly notice when I went from ...
