Re: $1300 Dev PC + Monitor

I'll take your point on the monitor, I changed it for the 23" UltraSharp. I agree that it's never a good idea to skimp on the PSU, so I changed for this model. 269 Australian dollars = 334.799907 New Zealand dollars, so the price of the UltraSharp isn't too far off. But in general yeah, it woul...

Re: $1300 Dev PC + Monitor

Thanks for the tips! That motherboard is much better than the one I had picked, for some reason it doesn't show up when you filter for Z68 boards on Pricespy. I'm assuming the Spinpoint is faster than the Seagate? It is a dollar cheaper. Wrt to the RAM, that's the cheapest PC-12800 listed on Pricesp...

$1300 Dev PC + Monitor

This PC is for my father and will mainly be used for development but also as a personal PC (especially consuming HD media). There will be basically zero gaming done on it. The budget is $1500NZD (~$1300 USD). A monitor is needed but I'm set for the OS. I'm looking for an opinion on the parts I've al...

Holy crap, America sounds **** scary :o

I don't know anyone who owns a gun. In a situation where you are being robbed, having a gun in the equation just makes things a whole lot worse to my mind. It elevates the situation from simple loss of property (it's only things) to potential death.

Re: Why do people like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

I liked it because it had a great atmosphere, and looting. I love anything with looting (as long as it's not a heavy-ass-RPG :-? ). I didn't find the combat difficult, as soon as you get a scoped weapon you can down pretty much anything with a headshot. Headshots aren't an unrealistic expectation in...

I personally find the misuse of 'much/many' and 'to/too' quite irksome, though the former is more likely a spelling mistake than a grammatical error in most cases.

Re: Windows 7 has more text, less intuition

I completely agree. I first noticed this change in the new version of Windows Live Mail; the different e-mails used to be colour coded and everything was clean and easy. They removed this colour coding (and the icons), which made it just that much more difficult to tell at a glance which e-mail was ...

Re: Starting up computer using keyboard.

My motherboard (Asus P35-DS3L) has the option to startup after typing a string or on a key press - it used to work with my PS/2 kb but I switched to a USB Sidewinder X6 and now it doesn't :\ I don't know if this is because of my motherboard or a limitation on USB keyboards? The computers at my schoo...

Re: F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Singleplayer Demo is out

I can run the game at max settings with 4xAA and 16xAF on my 8800GT 512mb @ 1680x1050. It's a very well optimised engine, much better than FEAR which, if anyone remembers, was incredibly poor in terms of performance back in the day. I loved the demo, although it did seem quite fast paced compared to...

Some BIOSes have the option to enable support for USB keyboards, or at least mine does. You'll need to find a PS2 keyboard in order to enable this functionality.

Re: BIF's Linux Adventures

Haha, screen resolutions seem to be Ubuntu's achilles heel. That's what put me off Linux until I bought a widely supported LCD monitor, and there seem to be so many posts around the net about Ubuntu failing at being able to detect the resolutions a monitor is capable of.

Re: your opinion of Windows 7

I see a lot of people saying "Vista SE," and "nothing much is changing." That might be true from a technical point of view, which is the point of view I think many would take on these boards and in tech journalism, but if you look at it from the point of view of the user, this is...

I don't know if XP has "netplwiz" like Vista, but you can try going to "Start > Run > netplwiz" and have a look at the settings in there.

After trying out VirtualPC, VMWare, and VirtualBox, I found VirtualBox to be the best solution, because it was the only one with USB support. Then again I was trying to get a USB peripheral to work that wouldn't work in Vista so my experience doesn't really relate to yours. In terms of ease of use V...

Steam already shows advertisements for games on Steam - it seems natural for Google to use that space to advertise a broader range of products.
