Re: Ebay Deal - Most items (Dead)

Thought about pulling the trigger on an overpriced graphics card, but even after the $100 discount a GTX 1080 would have been $600 (same as launch price!). I think retail is "supposed" to be $500 now, so no thank you. Not to mention most of them were from not-very-highly-rated sellers. Tha...

Not sure why initiating the shutdown process would 'fix' the issue if the monitor was to blame. Hopefully OP has something else lying around that he can use with the monitor to rule it out.

Re: PSA for anyone RMAing a graphics card

Not a bad result, but considering the market conditions, why didn't you ask for a 1000-series replacement card? I guess that's the second part of the PSA, don't give them two options if you want them to pick one... I also wasn't terribly hung up on getting a replacement card right away, willing to ...

PSA for anyone RMAing a graphics card

My MSI GTX 970 stopped booting recently, just a few months away from the expiration of the 3 year manufacturers warranty. I had a spare motherboard/PSU/CPU available to confirm that the problem followed the graphics card and not some other component. Explaining this to MSI tech support resulted in a...

Talking with him seemed to reinforce that the Chinese caps that are out there are most likely junk. I don't know anything about big ass electrolytic caps, but I think the industry largely depends on Japanese suppliers (and Samsung) for ceramics. It seems they still have a lead in technology and/or ...

Digikey is good for small quantities (minimum order is usually ~10), but if you really need several hundred they are probably not the most economical option.

If you need large numbers and don't care about shipping time, you could try alibaba. There's always Huaqiangbei too.

It is basically a closed-loop heat pump which uses the energy of the heat you are trying to remove to drive the loop... Seems like calling it "air cooling" is really underselling the whole thing. I'll give it another shot and reseat the heatsink this evening, then start another thread if ...

Heat pipes don't work that way. They are actually copper tubes (or pipes if you will) that have a liquid in them. Wanted to post here to lol at this, then did some background reading and :o 8700 and a 1080Ti in a HTPC case-without water. YOU DO LIKE A CHALLENGE DON'T YOU. I'm in pretty much exactly...

I just updated Windows 10, and it got stuck on the "All your data is where you left it" splash screen.

I was convinced that it was one of those file encryption ransomware type things. Very ominous for some reason.

My One Plus One has two curves on the back on opposite sides of the back BUT it doesn't move if I'm using the phone. I can tap on the top/bottom/sides of the phone without movement (buttons/earphone.) That's very nice, dear. Perhaps the aforementioned battery case will turn to be similarly remarkab...

It appears Microsoft isn't the only one having trouble with the hardware aspect. That thing is Fuuu-gly, but I don't know if it's dysfunctional (yet). I borrowed a friend's Lumia 920 a while back. I dunno, the Lumia 920 was 20% more voluminous than a Galaxy S3 but had a slightly smaller battery. If...

Re: AMD Confirms: Zen is a 2017 product

Don't forget: AMD needs to run ads to let Joe Public know about Zen too. Not everyone's a geekazoid like us (I know SSK certainly isn't.) Well more to the point, they need product wins. They don't have to spend a dime on advertising if they can convince Lenovo, HP etc. to release a bunch of designs...

I very much doubt it. It's a mobile focused spec (fewer pins, charging capability etc.), and we're only now starting to see devices (just from Samsung) based on MHL 3, which came out in 2013.

I agree that FX chips aren't great for gaming, but the A6-5400K is a dual core chip, just like the 8350 is an octa-core CPU. Every CPU architecture shares some components. We're getting into fuzzy territory with what a 'core' means here. Let's be more specific: Also be more careful recommending fak...

1) No matter what kind of monitor you get, it's still going to be under 30" and you will be sitting about 2-3 feet from it, not my idea of a great gaming experience. You seem to be implying that consoles are exclusively connected to TVs and PCs are exclusively connected to monitors, which is n...

IIRC the x86 decoder represents a very small amount (percentage-wise) of the die area and power usage of a modern x86 CPU. Roughly 2%, though I don't have a citation handy. As power consumption needs to drop lower, the stronger the advantage of ARM. We may need an updated version of this article.

If Thurrott of all people is complaining about it, it must be pretty bad. I played with Surface hardware in a Microsoft store recently, and came away impressed. This is a real pity. To be fair to "Joe" from Microsoft, hibernation is in fact a very very hard computer science problem. I woul...

Does it need to be portable? If not, I've found that hard drive docking stations give you a lot of flexibility when dealing with multiple drives. I can't find the specific model that I have, but it has two bays and does both USB 2.0 and eSATA. Something that's USB 2.0 only will likely be abysmally s...

Fry's will have some of this stuff.

The digikey website is usually most useful when you "search" for nothing, the categories page is the only way I've found to get something useful out of it.

Octopart is another online resource I've found useful.
