Not bad. How do they compare to NVidia's 1030? Have I mentioned TR should do a big low-end card roundup?

Re: Windows 10 Fall Update Build 1709

I updated my NVidia drivers immediately after install Fall Creators went in, and noticed that it listed "Not Installed" as the current version for a few of the components, which I thought was very odd. In light of this and some of the posts above, I'd probably recommend everyone reinstall ...

Re: Windows 10 Fall Update Build 1709

I did a manual check for updates on my main rig yesterday for S&G's, and Fall Creators immediately popped up and started coming down the pipe. I didn't get enough time with it afterward to comment much, but I did notice the granular update progress meters for a couple small updates afterward. Th...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

My wife and daughter noticed something interesting the other day. In drug commercials, when they get to the part near the end where they start listing potential side effects, they almost always cut to a scene with a cute dog. If the drug is something that would tend to be taken by senior citizens, ...

Re: Windows 10 Mobile officially dead

I'm sorry The Egg, but I just don't believe that and I don't think many other people do either. They just came into the game after Apple and Android had already been established and couldn't get devs or consumers to jump over. It wasn't about halo devices being available on all four carriers consta...

Re: Windows 10 Mobile officially dead

I don't think a new halo device with the exact same strategy they've been trying the past six or seven years will work. Microsoft never had a strategy or plan. Most Windows phones were low or midrange devices, and the few higher-end models were almost always exclusive to a single carrier. There was...

Ludi looks to have a 96-98'ish Corolla. Solid cars. Speaking of which, maybe it's the area I live, but it seems like you just don't see as many old beaters these days. I suppose it's possible that 15-20 year old cars are aging better than they had in the past, or maybe my own definition of what I se...

These are back down to $179. I can confirm that they contain WD80EFAX Reds, and they're easily shuckable without breaking anything. Pricing had bounced all over for a while ($199, 249, 299), so get 'em at $22.50/TB while you can.

Re: 31½" 2560x1440 @144Hz FreeSync2 for $550

FreeSync2 is proprietary. Meaning under the hypothetical that NVIDIA one days supports Adaptive Sync, the FS2 VRR would not work for an NVIDIA GPU. So the same buying logic as GSync applies, this monitor is only useful to current and future AMD GPU users. The limited HDR is one thing, but shouldn't...

Re: 31½" 2560x1440 @144Hz FreeSync2 for $550

Someone here was talking about Freesync 2 and HDR recently though, but I can't remember all that was said. Me. That's not an HDR10 or Dolby Vision compliant monitor. Freesync2 HDR is a custom HDR design that's better than sRGB, but not as good as HDR10. FreeSync2 is proprietary. Meaning under the h...

That people believe fake news isn't news. You can utterly and irrefutably debunk something, and there will still be a percentage of people who like to chew on rocks.

Re: Smartphones with removeable battery?

Fairly certain the main reason phone manufacturers are sealing phone batteries is to increase water resistance. Planned obsolescence is just a nice side benefit. Also agree with ludi....the vast majority of consumers don't give a crap about replaceable batteries. I care (and care about SD storage e...

Re: Smartphones with removeable battery?

For better or worse, swappable batteries are thicker and heavier than they otherwise need to be, because of the requirement for a protective shell. Device designs that integrate the battery don't require much more than the actual pouch. In the US, at least, nearly any phone that can be opened non-d...

Lol, plenty of professional musicians record albums in random rental houses with a large cardboard box with some foam on it protecting three sides around the mic. Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

I was actually mildly surprised by the 1030. Sadly, almost drawing even with a midrange card from several generations ago is a big improvement for this segment. Generally you get useless garbage which is only good for more display outputs. I'd be interested to see how much the 64-bit 48GB/s memory i...

Indeed.....at least on iOS 11. While interesting, I have to admit that I can’t remember even bothering to look at that setting for devices which aren’t logged in (at least in recent memory) because the info should theoretically get wiped when you delete the local cookie. Starting with version 1.0, all x16 slots are supposed to provide 75w through the slot alone. A stock 1030 is rated 30w (very impressive), so even an OC model should have lots of headroom on just the slot.

Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

Are they're any major gains from a hardware decode by upgrading? I'm shooting from the hip here, but I'm not aware of Pascal being any better than Fermi-2 in that regard. His CPU should be able to handle video playback without the hardware assist in either case. The 1030 will use substantially less...

Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

It looks like the 1030 has 384/24/16 (Shaders/TMUs/ROPs) versus 384/64/32 of the 560 Ti (albeit at 50% higher clocks, so you can multiply the 1030 numbers by 1.5 for comparison). You'll gain shading power, but lose elsewhere, even with architectural improvements closing the gap a bit. If you're play...
