Re: Boot On Tilt - probably not a feature

Good news, open-air build is stable. I'm posting from it after I installed ubuntu on the ssd and it's been up at least a few hours now.

Thanks for the case recomendation, DPete! I also did some tilt testing on the PSU and no issues there.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll be trying the open air build in the next few hours and get back to y'all with the results.

Boot On Tilt - probably not a feature

Hey all, last time I built a PC (5 years ago) TR helped out a lot. I did tons of research last time, checked everything was compatible, shopped around, etc...This time I kind of just impulse bought core components with some spare cash reusing a few from the old build. The problem is the system is a ...

Re: Headsets vs. In-ear?

Wow, thanks for all the responses everyone. I can probably rule out supra-aural headphones as I tend to listen for long periods at the computer or studying. That and I don't really like the feel of them. I guess it's a shame I was looking at only open circumaural designs. It seems closed may be bett...

Re: sandy bridge/battlefield 3 build

I'm pretty sure they confirmed the fault line demo was running on "just" a single GTX 580 and it looked like it had 60 fps. With optimization still due for launch and what not, it seems like it will be very playable if you have a current high end system. For comparison, Crysis on Very High...

Headsets vs. In-ear?

Hi, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to audio, so sorry if some of this is off or doesn't make sense. Anyways, I'm young and never cared about audio quality until recently. As such, the best audio experience I've ever had is integrated sound and a $30 pair of Phillips in-ears. :o I'm heading off to...

Re: An ode to the HD4870 1GB

Yeah, I'm keeping my HD 4870 1GB until BF3 and the 7000 series. It's longevity has certainly saved a lot of money along the way. Probably do a full system rebuild for that game actually...

Re: V7 Client Open Beta Test Begins

Eh, got me folding again.

Just 2.5k from an HD 4870 for now. New build in August will be a nice i7 2500k and probably an HD 6950 (depending on how the ATI core matures) so I should be able to help more then.

Re: Where'd fanless graphics go? (AMD 6xxx+, NV 5xx+)

Hoser, what issues have you had with PowerColor? In the past they were as recommended as Sapphire, so I'm curious. Not Hoser, but they flubbed several HD 4800 series cards with improper VRMs. If you ran a synthetic stress test on those cards, they basically shorted. Lost an HD 4870 to Furmark on st...

Re: Low profile passively cooled card

I have that HD 4550. Its been about 6 months since I last checked but I'm pretty sure it can play HL2:EP2 at around 15-20 fps at 1680x1050 with everything on max except 2x AF and no AA. My version of the Orange Box is currently not working so I can't test it right now. Portal was pretty close to 25-...

Re: Dead Space - More Like Dead Atmosphere, Amirite?

I finished the game without ever seeing what the line gun even looked like. That's why lack of need or even lack of impulse buy is a negative point in my original post. Did you play on hard? I found it impossible to deal with a large group of enemies with only the plasma cutter and plasma rifle. Th...

BS. Even the PS3 with the original Cell and all the other components sucks up ~220W at the wall. Even 3 of them will be 660W. Is it that low?, i remember it was about the same as the 360, and in the page i saw it, the 360 reched like 500w Sorry, but I can't see anyway to cool something drawing 500 ...

Is this a remake of the whole original, true to story and everything? Or just certain sections etc... Valve still tries to sell the original, are they going to charge for this or is this a free and a totally awesome mod?

Hmm. I don't know what to think about "trying to make a digital brain." Except for an interesting exercise in how brains function, what problem would this solve? If you want a [modern] computer to act like a brain, you're basically saying, "I want a computer to be less perfect and pr...

Re: ATI GPU2 Optimization Guide

I expected more replies in this thread by now. Its probably the fact that most users who do optimizations of this sort are the ones who spend money on hardware specifically for folding. But almost everyone who spends money on GPUs for folding buys nvidia. Also those who do run ATI GPU2 clients are ...

Good deal, I'm sure there are plenty of people with HD 4870 and HD 4850's from TR system build recommendations. Maybe we should start a campaign to make sure we get a post about folding in on every System Builders Anonymous thread?

Re: a quick question about flush interval

FLUSH_INTERVAL, changes the way the client communicates with the CPU, because of this FI isn't effected by the amount of GPUs, as each will still use the same FI values. Yes, FI has to change for different types of GPUs, but the amount of GPUs should not not effect it. Flying Fox has been nice enoug...

I enjoy C&C 3 Tiberium Wars quite a lot, mainly because it looks good but doesn't eat enough resources to slow down even with 1000 unit armies attacking each other. Also the fact that is has a nice international community. Never tried the Red Alert series, looked at Red Alert 3 but it just felt ...

Good info in the rest of the article. But the ATI client came out a couple of years before the nvidia client did. I'm referring to the GPU2 client, which both versions released at the same time, not the GPU1 client. I don't mean to suggest the ATI client is bad in any way, just that the Nvidia GPU2...

ATI GPU2 Optimization Guide

As far as I can tell, the ATI GPU2 client has not received much attention among TR folders, mainly because of lower PPD of AMD graphics cards, and partly because of the fact that the client is not as mature as the Nvidia GPU2 clients. But the most recent cores now allow for a series of optimizations...

Reminds me that I need to make the ATI GPU2 optimization guide for TR. I have 0-1% CPU usage on the client. Thanks to Cat 9.3, C...
