Re: New Gaming Rig

I totally disagree about the quad core instead of the dual core. The reason people suggest dual cores is they are typically faster and overclock better. Its easier to get performance out of them. In 2 years you may see a lot more games programming for multi-core but currently there are still far too...

Re: Flaky 680i Mobo + 8GB of RAM + Nvidia are Liars

There was a lot of good information here in this thread. I wish I had been able to respond to this earlier since I have extensive experience working with said EVGA 680i motherboard and memory. Currently I am trying to help my roommate fix his memory problems with his EVGA 680i motherboard. He also i...

I would go with the g15 and g5 and use onboard sound. Onboard sound has been pretty good for everything I have done. It is not perfect, but you could say that about a lot of the discrete sound cards as well. But everyone has their own opinions...

Re: Mixing ATi and Nvidia cards...

It would be interesting if you could get this to work, but like others I am skeptical. The first problem (after getting proper power) is you will need the OS to define the 8800GTS as a physX card and not a primary display card (insert problems with mentioned in this thread earlier here). Then you ne...

Re: Keep 8800 GTS 512MB or get the new 4870?

I am also in the camp of "why spend money if you are happy with what you have"? Use the card until its not performing to your satisfaction, then get the best card for the dollar that is out at that time. You can take that $300 and save it, get interest and then apply it to a new card when ...

Re: EVGA Step up Program Decicion Time!

I think upgrading to a GTX260 for around $100 is not a bad deal. There are a lot of improvements in the 200 series cards over the G92, that you may or may not see much bigger improvements in future gaming.

Re: Me confused by Winchip 16GB kit

The change there if you read through it seems to be a fix for drivers that crash when receiving a 64bit address they can't handle. It seems that when PAE was enabled it was sending a 64bit address to devices that could only support 32bits. So what they did is fix how PAE was working. The PAE now add...

Your right Matt, I concede there was absolutely no marketing gimmick used in any of AMD's pitches, and they would 'never' resort to such a thing 'ever'. There was also never any questions about it when they first started doing it, nor did anyone 'ever' criticise them for it. You are absolutely right...

Re: HD4870 whips GTX260

This is very true now. But DAAMIT has a way of increasing CF performance with driver releases. The next 6 months are going to be very interesting to me regarding CF performance. That won't address power consumption, motherboard/psu cost, or the fact that the cost difference is very substantial. It'...

You are absolutely right Matt, there is nothing special about the way HDCP is handled, man I have been wrong all this time to assume that HDCP had something to do with sending encrypted signals between devices... That is why any DVI-HDMI connector will work, you don't even need a special one like al...

Well, don't look on my comment as a ringing endorsement of all your views. It's good to hear varying opinions of course, but you do seem...

The one caviat I would include is that Dual Channel does typically work better if you get similar binned memory sticks. That is why they sell Dual Channel packs, they are using sticks out of the same bins. Though you should be able to use Dual Channel with any like sticks (ie 2 800Mhz chips) as lon...

If you really see SLI as a dealmaking plus then Intel boards aren't for you. PCIe 2.0 doesn't really matter. Why is having a lot of USB ports a negative, unless it means something you value is absent? I keep hoping Nvidia and Intel will come to a partnership and be able to see SLI on Intel mobos. I...
