Re: GTX 970 or 1060 to replace 560 Ti

After failing for weeks to find a half-decent deal on a RX480, I gave up and took home a Zotac GTX1060 6GB AMP! card. At $255 out the door, it was a  smokin' deal where I live (it retails for $280) and would've been a decent deal even on Newegg or Amazon. For comparison, a nice overclocked RX480 8GB...

Re: GTX 970 or 1060 to replace 560 Ti

Current games at 1080p maxed out? Get a 6GB+ card. A 4GB 480 or 3GB 1060 won't give you much margin, especially once 2017 rolls around. I still think adaptive sync solutions are one of these things that you probably don't need and don't notice, at least until you've seen it first-hand. I still game...

Re: GTX 970 or 1060 to replace 560 Ti

I discovered that DA:O runs smoothly with details cranked up and 2x AA, and DA:2 runs okay with medium details and no AA, at 1080p using my IGP . A stark reminder of the vintage of the games. I read a bunch of reviews watched some videos, and gathered my thoughts on this purchase: ⋅ I have...

Re: GTX 970 or 1060 to replace 560 Ti

what are the 480 prices like? $200 for a 3.5GB card that sucks at DX12 is only going to be useful for a little while longer and your 560Ti proves that you will use a card plenty long enough for that to matter. They're in short supply here. $308 for a Sapphire 480 8GB Nitro. $267 for a Gigabyte 480 ...

Re: GTX 970 or 1060 to replace 560 Ti

Graphics cards are priced about $50 higher in my area than in the US. I can list the prices of a few mid-tier GTX 1060 6GB cards for reference. I'll put Newegg prices without mail-in rebate in [brackets] for comparison. MSI Armor OC $312 [$260] Gigabyte Windforce OC $317 [$270] Asus Dual OC $325 [$2...

GTX 970 or 1060 to replace 560 Ti

My GTX 560 Ti finally kicked the bucket after 4 years and I'm hunting for my next graphics card. I'm a budget gamer and tend to play older games so that I can run them at max settings on current midrange (read: cheap) hardware and to score "game of the year" or similar special editions wit...

Re: What motivates a CPU upgrade for you?

I upgraded from i5-750 to Haswell only when my H55 motherboard gave up its ghost and I couldn't find a replacement H55/P55 board. All I had to buy was a motherboard, a processor and two sticks of RAM. Everything else was reused from the original rig, except the Silverstone casing from the dying Core...

Re: Looking for point-and-shoot camera suggestions

The new Canon ELPH with the hybrid IS system is pretty good. Considering that the worst thing that can happen to a point-and-shoot user is a blurred shot (instead of selecting the wrong aperture / shutter speed), a good anti-shake system is pretty much mandatory. As said before, image quality among ...

Re: 32gig SDHC suggestions

I usually don't advise getting cards larger than 16GB because if that card gets corrupted when it's nearly full, you are talking about more than 300 RAW images lost! If your friend insists on using a 32GB card, then get the best. Sandisk Extreme Class 6 or Class 10 or Extreme Pro Class UHS-1 are fin...

Re: jonesing for new hardware

Well, actually I never said I had to have a new motherboard, just a mojo fill-up. If, for instance, Intel was planning to knock the E8400/E8500 down to the low hunnert dolla range, I could maybe go with that and be happy for a while (after overclocking the snot out of it). I'm in a similar situatio...

I installed Windows 7 beta x64 on my desktop PC this morning. I shrank an existing partition and installed to a new partition created from that reclaimed space. I'm using it only to browse the web and to do other leisurely things in order to discover "day-to-day" quirks. So far I have two ...

Re: TR's Econobox Power Supply/Case Question

Pardon me for resurrecting a dead thread, but I have a question related to the case / PSU in the OP's topic. I too followed TR's good advice and assembled a econobox for casual gaming. It is running a lowly E7200 at stock speed, on a P43 board inside the NSK4480 case. I loaded it with 4GB of DDR2-80...

Re: Maximum GPU for 400W PSU?

On paper, you can get any single-GPU card. However, I wouldn't push it too far, knowing that PSUs can often deliver less than their rated power. I've got an Antec EA380 and went with the HD4850. It's great bang for the buck and it fits comfortably in the power envelope.

Re: 4870 and the reordering of the hierarchy - What to buy!?!

Even the HD4870 may not be enough for playing the latest games at the highest detail level and resolution. However, you sound like the money-smart type who buy today's midrange hardware to play yesteryear's games full-on. And maybe throw in a couple of current titles to play at medium detail. If I a...

Re: SLI/CF: the debate

I voted no. For SLI, you have to get a nVidia chipset, which IMO has horrible driver issues. That is the biggest turn-off. Intel's midrange chipsets (P35, P45/43) kick serious butt at very affordable prices, and provide much-needed stability. No amount of FPS is going to matter if a BSOD pops up in ...

Re: Help with configuring an $8000 PC

Good call on the big displays. If you are really sure you don't play games, make sure the monitors are 8-bit IPS/PVA panels. I think the Dell 30" Ultrasharp ones are still good, but I heard recently the smaller Ultrasharp models are starting to use cheap TN panels, so beware! There is not much ...

Re: Adequate PSU For ATI 4850??

I'm pretty sure it's 'PFN_List_Corrupt', a nice generic and unhelpful BSOD that indicates memory problems. My bad. Yes it is indeed PFN_List_Corrupt. I read that it is related to memory, but I am quite confident that the RAM in my rig is okay. Maybe I'll switch back to Catalyst 8.6 Hotfix an...

Re: MOBO for a 4870 and a E8400? P35 bottleneck?

I don't think the PCIE 1.1 should be a bottleneck. If you are sure that you will not need Crossfire, you can try the GA-EP43-DS3L. It is only $10 more than the GA-EP35-DS3L. You only give up Crossfire capability by taking P43 instead of P45, but you get all the energy savings from the die-shrunk chi...

Re: First time poster: Can I Run a 4850? And should I?

Make sure the Dell PSU has the rite number of connection cables as the HD 4850 requires TWO connectors leading into it's 6 pin power connection. He already said that the PSU has a 6-pin PCIE connector. Just plug that straight into the HD4850 and ignore the 2-molex-into-PCIE adaptor. I returned my 8...

Re: Help with new System

The problem with CompA is probably hardware, since it actually freezes before any software loads. You can update the BIOS, since your Gigabyte board should have a backup BIOS which will overwrite the main BIOS if the latter becomes corrupted. Also, download memtest86+ and test the RAM. Of course, it...

Please let us know if they take anything away in the P43 in terms of overclocking. That can be one viable option. The BIOS doesn't seem nerfed at all. It has a lot of overclocking options. I'm going to list just the CPU ones. You can tweak memory and PCIe as well. CPU Clock Ratio (6-9.5) CPU Host F...

Re: CM Centurion 5 with 430W PSU - Yay or Nay?

I just found out that BestBuy has the Antec NSK4480B for $62.99. It comes with an EarthWatts 380W, and my system power draw is about 260W. I might as well pick it up ($4 return Subway fare) and save on shipping ($20.21 for the Centurion with PSU).

Thanks to everyone who helped!

Will the Antec EarthWatts 380W do the job? TR April system guide recommends it (as part of the NSK4480 case) with a 9600GT, which is only a few watts less than a reference 8800GT. I can get it from Newegg for $37.92 shipped. Might as well go this route: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_res...
