Re: Need gaming mouse--damaged hands

Not saying it would necessarily work for you, but have you looked into one of the vertical mouse options? I've used the bluetooth version of the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4, as well as one from Anker. My issue was oncoming carpal tunnel, but they both did fairly well at keeping my wrist in a more natu...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

Oh, speaking of... you mentioned that your TV tuner wasn't working. I'd scan through the output of 'dmesg | grep saa' and look for information about your tuner card. The Happauge HVR2250 is based on an SAA7164 chip which requires you to install some firmware on the filesystem. Mine looks similar to:...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

So, I need some advice on making the switch. After fighting shared folders over the network from Windows 7 to 10, I am giving up. I believe I will go to a linux distro and just no longer fight the fight. <snip> I think using Ubuntu would be the simplest distro to work with. I also want to configure...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

Do I want Ubuntu Desktop or Server? I suspect server as I want to run it headless, but I have no idea the options in desktop. If desktop will give me read/write access to folders as well as let me log in remotely, do I really need Server? I'd recommend grabbing the desktop version as someone else a...

Re: New to Linux - HTPC/Plex server

About NTFS, I dunno. I've never tried it. My Google-fu tells me there's support for it, but if you're not going to be dual-booting there's no real reason to keep the drives as NTFS. I'm sitting in gnome right now with my shared NTFS drive mounted... Been using an NTFS partition to share data betwee...

I have memories of swapping out the many floppies to install Win95 on a friend's 386 way back when. Can definitely confirm it worked... but can't say it was pleasant.

Luna typically sees latency of 16 to 32ms over WiFi.

Yeah, so far I'm perfectly happy being one of the token devs there who is more comfortable with C/C++ and Python. Kinda keeps me out of the center of the storm, I think. Meh, it pays the bills.... although I have a lot more fun after-hours doing C dev on things like the mesa project. On Topic: You ...

Re: Updating issues in Linux MInt

Ah, and I was still confused because the A4-7300 is actually a chip that belongs in 6000-series APU naming. :-? They probably still had too much stock of one of the older chips. It's confirmable as Terascale because AMD's pages for the GCN-based APUs note DX12 support. Yeah, AMD's radeon model numb...

Re: Updating issues in Linux MInt

As was said earlier (thanks JBI for the step-by-step), you'll need to actually execute the file you downloaded from a terminal using 'sh'/'bash' or just setting the executable bits and running it. The old AMD drivers (and maybe the new ones too) are packaged as a self-extracting executable shell scr...

Re: I broke down -

Looks like Dells 13.3" Ryzen builds just hit the market...a couple I definitely would've wanted just showed up at my local BB. Those look really promising. 13", IPS, officially supports 16GB ram but I suspect that they can go to 32GB, 256GB SSD, Mixture of HDMI, USB-C, and USB-A, with an ...

I've got a 2009 Macbook Pro 13" that is really starting to show its age, and an AMD-based equivalent to the T440p that I have at work, but with faster graphics, would be wonderful. Hopefully Apple will update the MacBook Pro lineup with 8th gen Intel soon. A 13" MacBook Pro with a quad co...

Completely agree that AMD's partners are really screwing up with the Ryzen APU landscape. The IdeaPad 720s was almost perfect for my needs until I saw that it was single-channel. I'm really hoping that the ThinkPad A485 (Q3 supposedly) ends up hitting all of the right checkboxes, or I may just give ...

Ditto. Might need to get myself one of those. You hit the end with a hammer which drives the bit down in the screw head and also torques the screw to undo it. Mainly used on automotive stuff, I wouldn't be using something like that on anything like computers! Agreed. But it still looks like a reall...

Sometimes, putting a thin piece of rubber - cut a piece from a balloon - between the screwdriver bit and the screw head helps. Ooh, I like that one. I have to agree with JBI, there's something wrong with your heatsink/fan/thermal-paste. That CPU should not be getting that hot if your cooling system is working correctly (and isn't undersized for the CPU you've got installed).

Re: My first Notebook, how to care for it.

Lithium batteries wear out faster when they're flat. Keep them topped up when possible and if you can, avoid running them all the way down to zero. I've heard conflicting advice about this. Everyone seems to agree (and my experience confirms) that leaving them sit in a discharged state for extended...

Re: Keeping a Windows install (dual-boot) out of the way on a budget

The first is that Linux prefers the system clock to be UTC and Windows prefers it to be local. It's easier to fix the Linux side, but I don't care enough, so Windows just thinks my time zone is UTC. No big deal. You can configure windows to recognize and work with a system clock that is set to UTC ...

I was forced to replace the previous array of 2TB Greens (now called Blues) because of the awful head-parking issue that I didn't realise until after the damage was done. Silly question, but why don't you replace the Reds with newer Blues, and just disable (or extend the time of) the head parking? ...

Re: Looking for the safest, strongest storage, help

No drive is guaranteed not to break. If you have valuable data, you need to keep multiple copies in multiple physical locations. This. If you have just one copy, there's nothing preventing you from accidentally deleting/overwriting your only copy while you're working someday. There's also no guaran...

There was no need to use Windows at all on the development side, and I prefer to work in Linux anyway, so the decision was easy. The two jobs I had prior to...

I never lived in a rental (Chicago and New England) that didn't have some amount of allocated basement storage, certainly at least enough for a set of wheels/tires.  Is that not the norm in other parts of the country?
