Re: Upgrade card now or wait for 700 series?

I'm using a GTX 460 SOC at 1680 x 1050... I'll more than likely be upgrading to a 1080p monitor this year at some point, so I guess that's a factor to keep in mind. Upgrade your graphics card after you get the new IPS LCD monitor. Don't limit yourself to just 1920x1080. Consider 1920x1200, 2560x144...

Re: Upgrade card now or wait for 700 series?

I've got an i7-860 that's overclocked, so I don't think I'm being help back by my CPU.

Upgrade card now or wait for 700 series?

Right now I'm using a GTX 460 SOC at 1680 x 1050. I've managed to get by with what I've played, (Crysis 2, Black Ops 2, The Witcher 2) but I'm wondering if there is a current card available that's a decent deal and would give me a very noticeable boost. Upcoming games I'm interested in are Crysis 3 ...

Re: Upgrade Conundrum

Hi, I've been itching for an upgrade for a while now, and was just waiting for the 69xx release to figure things out. I don't know what I should upgrade, my core i7920 or my 4870s in crossfire? My overclock on the CPU is only stable for 3ghz, but I don't know if that is due to my motherboard or not...

Re: RAM Question

Honestly, having reviewed a few kits I can tell you high-speed enthusiast RAM is snake oil. Halfway decent consumer grade kit can often hit the same speeds and timings as the enthusiast stuff can if you pump the same amount of voltage into it, and even then you're looking at such a negligible perfo...

RAM Question

Currently I have 2x2GB of DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000). Would I be looking at any problems or noticeable performance differences if I put in an additional 2x2GB of DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)? Here are the specific models in question: PC3 1600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231410 PC3...

Re: I need a quiet GTX 460

I got a Gigabyte GTX 460 OC (1GB) today. Jebus this think *really* is freaking quiet. These became available just moments ago. Supposed to be the most quiet as well as the most cool of the 460's. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814134117 I'm trying to decide which I want first...

Re: I need a quiet GTX 460

Stumbled across this thread randomly. I've been using a 4850 since release day, and the noise and heat are terrible as countless other users have mentioned. As I've upgraded over the years, I've tried to get the most quiet parts available, even if it meant sacrificing a little bit of performance or ...

Re: Noctua NH-D14 vs Thermalright Silver Arrow?

My Googlefu nets: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/thermalright-silver-arrow.html Seems like the Thermalright is your choice. Both pretty similar thermal performance, but the Thermalright is a good bit quieter. Yeah, that was one of maybe two decent reviews I found. I wasn't too sur...

Noctua NH-D14 vs Thermalright Silver Arrow?

Trying to decide between the two of these. I haven't been able to find a lot on the Thermalright Silver Arrow, unfortunately, nor is it available in many places.

I'd prefer whichever is the more quiet of the two.

Your thoughts?

Re: 500 Bucks To Spend on Upgrades

I've come pretty close to deciding on a GTX460. I want to find out which one is the most quiet, but compared to my current 4850, I'm sure any model will be much more quiet. As for SSD's, I'm not entirely sure about the value of them yet. Yes they're fast, but the technology is also young and getting...

Re: Atrocious Temps On My i7-860

I would be willing to bet the CPU voltage is too high under load, not the setting, but reality. It is quite possible you have a faulty motherboard. It doesn't take much inaccuracy of a voltage setting on the motherboard to make a huge difference in power draw on the CPU. Say for example you have it...

Re: Atrocious Temps On My i7-860

What are idle and load voltage and frequency? What is ambient temp? Is it any better if you kick the case fans up a notch, or leave the side off and point a desk fan at it? Did the paste look ok? I think it would be fairly obvious if it had expired (ie, dried up). When you took the HS off to reappl...

Your problem is so obvious.

you've plugged the cpu fan into a case fan plug. That is why the cpu fan isn't spinning up with the temps.
so when the cpu temp is high, the motherboard is just revving up some case fan instead of your cpu fan lol.

Wrong. It is connected to the proper plug.

Re: Atrocious Temps On My i7-860

You're either still applying the paste wrong or there is some other issue with the setup in terms of either airflow or the temperatures are simply being read wrong. There's no reason the stock heatsink should reach those temperatures. I don't see how else I could be applying the paste wrong since I...

Re: Atrocious Temps On My i7-860

Reseated it, reapplied OCZ Freeze paste, and the idle temps are slightly lower now, upper 30s and lower 40s. Started Prime95, and instead of getting to ~100C right away, it took a little while, slowly creeping up. I stopped the test when it hit 90C. Still way too high for a load temp. Defeats the pu...

I figured it didn't know what to do after hitting a temp that high and went on the fritz. The sensors s...

I'm pretty sure that the stock heat sink has a pre-applied layer of generic thermal goop. If you put another layer on, that could be the problem.

I removed the original layer with ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover, then added the OCZ Freeze.

Thanks for all the replies. The simple stuff first ... Ok so if I did go with this build and this CPU cooler, I would have to raise the cooler fan or remove the heat sink from the RAM. Thanks for the link to Noctua's site where they make this clear; that's where I now recall reading that info. Cons...

I haven't checked the exact measurements of the two, but it really seemed like my 5850 fit into my P182 case easier than my 4850, and my cable management is awful due to my power supply being an overweight octopus. 4850 was always a tight squeeze, and even though the 5850 is a bit more thick, length...
