This would be amazing, and likely an instant buy - if it happens again soon.

Re: Upgrading from an HD 7850

What's your screen resolution and budget? AMD cards aren't the best value at the moment because the crypto-miners are inflating their prices more than Nvidia. The minute a card has 4GB of VRAM on it these days, the price is jacked-up disproportionately, because it's usable for Monaro and Etherium m...

How difficult is it to switch from AMD to NVIDIA from a drivers standpoint without reinstalling windows and the games, etc?

Upgrading from an HD 7850

Hey all, I was hoping for some advice about getting a better graphics card. I dont have enough money to build an entire new system yet, and my system runs reasonably well; but the reality check hit when I had to run Far Cry 5 windowed to get frame rates above 30. I know GPUs are crazy expensive righ...

Re: Start menu Search, not able to type, but cortana still w

Can you clean install from a win 7 upgrade? It might come to that. I've just been trying to avoid it because to go through all the time/effort of upgrading and still have this issue would be the pits.

Re: Start menu Search, not able to type, but cortana still w

Thanks for your help - I knew it was a bug, and I've been doing this to get the functionality back. Once I end the task, it will instantaneously reboot (both cortana and searchiu.exe), and then I have about an hour before the start menu stops working again. I've even tried shutting cortana off, but ...

Start menu Search, not able to type, but cortana still works

Hello all, I have an issue that I can't figure out. After my computer has been idle a while, I'll hit the win key and the start menu will pop up, but the search bar won't pop up when I start typing. Otherwise the start menu works well, and I can still search through cortana via voice. The only thing...

Re: Black screen on waking from sleep on Macbook Air

Yeah, I knew that Apple knew about it. They've been very helpful and accommodating at the apple store so far. I was just hopeful that I wouldn't have to make the trip back out there one more time. I'll swing by and see what they do for me this time. It's still covered under warranty, so that shouldn...

Black screen on waking from sleep on Macbook Air

Hey all, The almighty gerbils are always able to help, even when it seems all hope is lost. :D I was having a problem with my macbook air, where waking up the computer approx. 20-30 seconds after letting it idle to sleep causes a black screen with a cursor to appear. The problem occurs regularly, an...

Re: Windows 8.1 won't sleep automatically

So this is kind of silly, upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8 was less problematic for things people expect like sleep than Win 8 to Win 8.1? (I don't know, maybe there were glitches like this for Win 7 to Win 8.) I actually had a very similar problem happen to me when I did upgrade from win7 to win8 - t...

Re: Windows 8.1 won't sleep automatically

Just as an update, the problem is better on my end but not gone. My computer would eventually go to sleep with an idle time set at 15 min, but sometimes it would take hours to get there. This is even if the command line says that there are no active requests on the system. What further added to my f...

Re: Windows 8.1 won't sleep automatically

The past 3 times I have let my computer idle, it has slept after the time set in power options, and the /requestsoverrides I set before updating to 8.1 are working as well. I checked by opening an audio stream, and the computer still idled to sleep. Perhaps the maintenance helped? I haven't yet atte...

Re: Windows 8.1 won't sleep automatically

Maintenance might help you then. It might have been kicking off a scheduled Defender scan right as the PC was trying to go to sleep. That's just a arrow in the dark at the moment though. Thanks - Ill keep you posted. Maintenance just finished, but my screens just cut on again =(. I tried the /reque...

Thank you, I'm in the midst of trying your suggestions. However, when I ran the /energy command, the generate report will not come up. IE says File Not Found (Cannot display page). That didn't work for me. I did change settings so that all the computers are now on the same homegroup, and sharing things appropriately - to no avail. Computer still remains awake unless network card is unplugged or sleep times are super short.

Windows 8.1 won't sleep automatically

Hey y'all, I'm coming to you guys as a last resort. I recently upgraded my PC to windows 8.1 from a ~2 month old install of windows 8. On windows 8, PC slept predictably when set to 30 min. I had two "powercfg /requestsoverrides" set via command line to ensure that this happened, however. ...

Re: Laptop recommendations

I think the upgrade makes much more sense than to buy (yet another) cheap crappy computer that will also become unusable in less than two years. You can buy a 64 GB SSD and a stick of RAM for around $100 and save the rest towards buying something at least Core i5 Haswell based next year. This seems...

I'm not sure how much will run without drivers but you should try furmark. Thanks for the tip - How long should I let the test run? So I disabled the video card drivers, and no artifacts yet, but sometimes they can take days to show up. It's also been prime95 stable for about 14 hours now. I'll run memtest next, but I was thinking: Is there any sort of video card stress test that may help me out?

Re: CCC Keeps Crashing

If it happens whilst idling, try running without drivers for a few hours - I mean the Microsoft "Standard Display Adapter". If it crashes then you have proof it's not the driver. It will look like arse, but at least it's not the 640x480, 16-colour uselessness that it used to be. Thanks fo...
