Re: 2018 Hurricane Season

I have a co-worker who lives in Hampton Roads, VA. He is in Zone D, but his parents are in Zone A (currently under mandatory evac and at his house). I have another friend who just started teaching at ECU in NC, classes are suspended starting Wednesday through the end of the week. I'm up in NoVA, jus...

Wait, don't do anything.. What the heck is that gray thing? Is that a third cable because it looks like some sort of plug. In the 1st set of new pictures, in one of the images (3rd from bottom) you can see some writing underneath the grey cable (looks like AU and possibly D. So probably AUDIO, mayb...

So one story I'll pass on that may throw some water on this (not completely, just an interesting analog): My father-in-law flew in the F4 Phantom II in Vietnam (and the Cold War). After his stint in Vietnam he and his wingman were flying CAP in West Germany when they got a radio call to intercept a ...

So I bought John Carreyrou's (the WSJ reporter who wrote the original investigative pieces in 2017) book "Bad Blood" about the saga. I really enjoyed the book and it was a quick read. A couple of points that I gleaned from it: 1. Theranos was fairly unique in Silicon Valley, as it had a pr...

Re: Looking at new laptops - with no idea where to begin

How about these? Both right around $1,000, 500GB SSD, 8GB RAM. Ideally I'd bump up the ram, though for your use it probably won't matter much (except for lots of browser tabs). You can also easily add/change RAM later. Also, a NVM SSD would be better (and a more brand name one) but if it doesn't fit...

I am still struggling to understand exactly how this warrants FBI budget and time. Especially when they're having a hard time stopping school shooters. Why isn't this a matter between the NCAA and specific schools, with potentially several cases against NBA agents? Because it is about money, and cr...

Re: W7/W10 sharing folders?

It could be the version of SMB. WIndows 10 only allows access to SMB v2 and above. Windows 7 should default to SMB 2.1 but it's worth checking: On your Windows 7 box open powershell with admin permissions (right-click powershell, run as administrator) and then run the following command: get-smbconne...

Haven't really kept up with it, but I imagine SMB V1 has a lot of potential security vulnerabilities? Going off on a tangent, you'd be surprised how much RS-232 serial is still used behind the scenes. A lot of modern devices still have hidden RS-232 functionality on an internal connector (or at lea...

Not as old as some of the stuff on this thread, but in the last month two of our development teams escalated two separate issues that they couldn't connect to SMB shares through their custom java code. The problem was their libraries (in both instances) only supported SMB v1. One effort was a new ef...

Then you need this: https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Accesso ... B01G97X6T4

Are you installing Windows 10 and planning on using Bitlocker (or other whole disk encryption software?) If so then you should get this. If not, then it doesn't do anything for you.

A TPM is required for some full disk encryption software (Bitlocker being the most notable). The is also other encryption software out there that does not require a TPM (Veracrypt being the most notable). You would need to provide your chosen motherboard/manufacturer to find a compatible TPM - as th...

The Packers looked awful in the 1st half, but they picked it up some in the 2nd half Both teams did. Part of it is probably the reluctance to play starters much (and QBs hardly at all) during the preseason. A lot of rust to shake off, it seems. But that punch call in the 2Q was BS, didn't even call...

15.6" screen, i7-6700HQ, GTX1060, 8GB RAM, but only 1TB HD (no SSD).  No OS either.  Still, gets the graphics where you want it and a SSD (or more RAM) can be added later.
