Re: Where is our editor?

Been coming here since high school. I always check here first for content on new hardware. I generally feel free to post questions about tech, even if they feel silly, since I know this group is generally so balanced. RnP and rage levels here are incredibly low. It really is a great community. While...

Re: 32GK650F-B $300

Cool, that's what I kind of figured. Everytime I read in-depth reviews and response comes up, it doesn't really seem to be a big issue. I think it was more a concern in the early LCD era/mid-late oughts. I have only noticed it on TV displays when I've commandeered them for monitors.

Re: 32GK650F-B $300

They both appear to have the same panel (M315DVR01) So yeah, it looks like its literally just the Gsync and may be a few other features different. 5ms response seems highish, but IIRC those response times are common to fudge anyway, right? Is 5ms too high for gaming? I use 32" flat panels at wo...

Not sure if it has any merit to it. I think cooking has a massive amount of anecdotal "knowledge" in it. Savory dishes are art. Pastry is science. Watch Alton Brown on Good Eats If you’re craving more of the science that explains why chefs do what they do. Yeah I have years of cooks illus...

Re: Phoenix Point goes Epic-exclusive after Fig crowdfunding based on Steam/GOG

So I preordered Phoenix Point, but I'm not familiar with the Epic game store. Can someone please explain to me what this means? I mean, I know that the Epic game store is similar to Steam and GoG. But I don't know anything else about it. So can someone please explain to me why this is so bad? Thank...

Re: 2 TILs about our pal Jeff Kampman

yeah i guess my main concern would be the fat bonding with any flavor in the meat. ive seen a few youtube channels try sous vide in butter, and they said it came out tasting less like the original meat. but if you took a lean, cheap cut, then overseasoned the butter, i'm sure itd be fine. i think so...

Re: 2 TILs about our pal Jeff Kampman

Sous vide as a hobby or as a career?? why not both? I believe there is some 6 michelin tire chef in vegas somewhere that sous vides steaks in butter then throws them on a grill to finish. Not sure if it has any merit to it. I think cooking has a massive amount of anecdotal "knowledge" in ...

Yeah Corvallis, Oregon here. Mid Willamette Valley, south of Seattle about 250 miles. I think you Seattlites (sp) got all our snow! We had a wicked snow forecast that just got downgraded to the usual rain. Stay safe! I know it's not much compared to other places, but that means a) people don't know ...

Good stuff! I bought the adata nvme drive in the deal listed here from them. Looks like they have some screaming deals. Rakuten

I've been seeing a lot of Rakuten lately. I did a quick Google search and they look like they're expanding into the international market, but were previously Japanese. They also look like they have a history of security and fraud issues. Does anyone use them for hardware? They have some screaming de...

Re: Lots of Minor Issues after Graphics Card Upgrade

Sounds like it might be a Mobo issue. I had one that would cook graphics cards, and I didn't suspect the mobo until the USB slots started dying. Unfortunately there's no way way to test that hypothesis.

If it were a driver or windows thing, I don't think you'd notice it on boot.

Re: RTX 2070 vs 2080

Yeah I guess it's best to wait for tomorrow and see what AMD has! The vega 64 seems like the best bargain, but sounds like it has some drawbacks as well. ;) I was just reading reviews and pricing out a TR build and ran across some Vega benchmarks, and they seem a lot more attractive now, hence me po...

Re: RTX 2070 vs 2080

Vega 64 for $400 is a much better value than a 2070. So if the rest seem a bit steep for you, maybe consider that?

Can someone else weigh in on that? I may be missing something since no one else seemed to mention it.

Re: RTX 2070 vs 2080

I have a 1080 TI (and a r7 1700) and its about as good as a 2070. I can run everything cranked. Though, I'm one of those weirdos that gets enraged with hitching, so I play everything on the lowest anyway. 2070 or 2080 is a fine choice, though like was already mentioned, Paying $500 for performance y...

For the sake of learning, if I did get the cheaper monitors and a colorimeter, what's the process of using it to adjust the colors? It might be a neat skill.

Re: Viotek GN32DB vs GN32LD

I don't know anyone that has a colorimiter... most of the tech folks I know are IT or gamers. I haven't met anyone that does graphic design or cares much about display quality. Truth be told, having perfect reproduction would probably be lost on my skill level. The majority of the stuff I do doesn't...

Re: Viotek GN32DB vs GN32LD

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking, regarding price range. Once you get up to the ~$500 range there's a lot more options. I guess I'm also really worried about the colors, since that was my huge beef with the Korean IPS's that I picked up. Is it reasonable to expect a company like Samsung to do...

Viotek GN32DB vs GN32LD

Hey everyone, I've been trying to find the reason for the price difference between these two monitors. I've had mixed luck with off brand monitors before (the korean IPS craze gave me about 50/50 results, but currently running a great 27" 144hz IPS AOC monitor), so I'm trying to be a little mor...

Re: Tariff price concerns

Good points. Thanks :) I guess I was just looking for an excuse to upgrade. ;) I was pretty shocked at the increase in speed from 3570k to R7 1700. I guess it's not the real cap for my dev progress. That's mostly me not knowing c++ and being on the struggle bus as I convert code. Ue4 and visual stud...

Re: Tariff price concerns

I guess the question is if we think that there will be significant tech changes in the next year or so. 2080s will probably be overprice for a while, 590s didnt make any waves (i have a 1080 ti now) Ryzen 1 -> Ryzen 2 took 1.5ish years, so we probably wont see a new Ryzen until 2020. even so, would ...

Tariff price concerns

Ok so I don't want this to devolve into rnp but in think this is a good topic. For us Americans, what parts will be impacted by the new tariff? Which parts are domestic and what should we pick up now before January? Is anyone else thinking of an early Christmas? I have a great system now, only a yea...

Re: IT ticketing software

Thank you for all the responses! We haven't *totally* ruled out open source, I think we are just hesitant. It's mainly a concern regarding supporting functionality when people come and go. Eventually, we want to role the solution out campus wide, which makes the idea of having lots of custom solutio...

Re: IT ticketing software

Yeah I think we are trying to avoid a homebaked or open source solution. In the past, when people move on it becomes an issue. Documentation is also tough to keep up to date. I don't know if it's totally out of the question, but I think they want to go with a pre built solution that would work acros...

IT ticketing software

Does anyone have anything they are happy with in their workplace? We have folks using team dynamix and they don't like it at all. It's more of a project manager solution with ticketing on the side. We are looking to pilot a new system that will work well across campus but the only one I've heard goo...
