Re: Dell laptop "working on it" file delays...

thanks you guys -

Looking at what's running in the background...jeez Win10 sure runs a lot of processes...or maybe it's just a more complete list compared to Win7? Whatever - I just wish the Win10 Taskmgr (that got such rave reviews) would show the running count of processes the way Win7 does.

Dell laptop "working on it" file delays...

Inspiron 5570 laptop, Win10 Pro, 2TB HDD (replaced with an NVMe M.2), core i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, Radeon 530 4GB VRAM + integrated Intel 620 From day one I've been getting a delay when I open a file, up to 10 secs. Explorer says it's "working on it." Not every time but most of the time. So I...

Ghosts in the machine? Inexplicable static

I can't imagine what explains this bit of weirdness... While sitting in the other room I suddenly heard static coming from my bedroom. Investigating I found my old Logitech z506 speakers were the culprit. I turned them off and the static stopped. No mystery...except the computer they're connected to...

Hi guys - Is memtest(86) still the preferred way to check desktop RAM? Can memtest(86) check all 6 modules even if only 4 show up in the BIOS (info screen)? core i7 980X MSI BigBang X-Power X-58 24G (6 X 4G) of G.Skill Ripjaws F3-10666CL9T-12GBRL @ 533MHz 1.5V CR-2 7-7-7-19 I never mess with the tim...

Re: Upgaded RAM and added SSD; Booting up gets Black screen No Power Keyboard/Mouse

If I understand you correctly the display and KB/mouse don't respond even with just the original hardware? I have to think something got disturbed. Pull the graphics card and re-seat it, that's the likely culprit I think. Do the same with the RAM. Let us know if you figure it out I'd be interested t...

Nice! But I'm trying to avoid adding hardware beyond a set of speakers, maybe a sub and maybe a DAC...
That's interesting though, no audio manager for Windows that isn't tied to a 3rd party.

I see, so every audio manager is tied to some 3rd party software? Is there any way to control your audio without installing Creative, Asus etc. drivers?

Audioquest Dragonfly Black as the DAC / analog output, then let Win 7 do the mixing/controlling. https://www.audioquest.com/dacs/dragonfly/dragonfly-black Thanks for the reply and the link. Audio INs and OUTs...help please!

Hi folks I hope you're all staying safe... I want to buy a set of powered speakers but I'm wondering how to bypass the onboard ALC889 if they don't have a USB IN. (I'm not using a separate amp just my PC). My PC has analog and digital ports but I'd like to avoid them so I can get rid of Realtek's HD...

Re: Audioengine 5+ speakers onboard analog ok?

Nice! That's the time to splurge... The reviews I've read agree with you - the S8 brings the HD3s to another level. It is expensive though, compared to subs I've seen from Polk and Klipsch. That's why I'm still considering the AE5+. I figure they won't "need" a sub as much as the HD3, at l...

Re: Audioengine 5+ speakers onboard analog ok?

Thanks JAE - so the always-active inputs are not a problem at all - common sense applies once again lol. Yes I can imagine the bass is lacking somewhat - I don't expect rumbling bass pedals from a 2.75" woofer. I have an old Logitech sub but it kinda sux. Still maybe better than no sub at all. ...

Re: Audioengine 5+ speakers onboard analog ok?

Bluetooth audio uses lossy compression. Not sure whether you'd actually notice, as it's generally pretty transparent (provided you're not experiencing glitches or dropouts). Some newer devices do support high(er) fidelity transmission modes (I forget the acronym which indicates that, but IIRC both ...

...why would I BT an MP3 from my phone? For me the BT connection is an attractive feature - means my desktop can stay asleep and I can still listen to music. Re: Audioengine 5+ speakers onboard analog ok?

Excellent info JBI - thank you very much! The board I have is old but MSI included a discrete sound card (Realtek ALC889) so at least it's not sitting directly on the board.

I guess that's the plan - try it out and go from there...Thanks again!

Thank you JAE! I didn't even think of dropping in a BT card...that's a good solution. So your opinion is BT audio is as good as a wired connection? Re: new PSU now SATA drives won't load

I think I'm going to try swapping boards (and BIOS chips) on these Sammy drives. I found the boards online, about 40 bucks each and there's a shop close to work that can swap the BIOS for me. This site seems to think it's at least possible to get the drive spinning again, long enough to grab some fi...

Re: new PSU now SATA drives won't load

Both of those PSUs are modular. You didn't happen to use one of the Corsair strings on the EVGA, did you? That could instantly fry every drive attached to that string. oh no... Yes at first I did. I never imagined a different pin out between cables (tho it's obvious now). I only thought if they're ...
